Fabric

Genuinely really upset by the news. First went 15 years ago and was a regular for many years. Hadn't been for a while but a huge part of my clubbing life.

Disgraceful but hardly surprised by the outcome. Exact same happened with the Arches. Police state.

I didn't go anywhere near as much as I should have so gutted about this and worrying times ahead for London night clubs.

I must admit, their decision to fight the license conditions last year seems strange now. Can't help but feel if they had agreed to id scans and drug dogs on the door might be different now.

I'm convinced they aren't actual drugs dogs at WHP but they were referenced

Ha. I've thought the same for a long while.
Just the presence of a dog would be better than none at all it would seem though.

Ive only been a few times to Fabric but gutted its gone.

They've said the 2 people who died bought the drugs inside, seems to be a main point. How have they worked that out?
Apologies if there is evidence elsewhere ive missed.

Not sure if it was both, but in one case the victims friends said they did

One of the kids bought a pill on the premises but he had already taken 3 of his own - smuggled in his pants - that he thought were not working.

A tragic way for it all to end. I agree that the authorities were probably smarting from the overturn of the last set of committees etc and were looking for a way to restore order. I first went there almost 15 years ago to the day and went regularly - a lot has been said about it not being as good in recent years but if you picked your nights wisely you could still strike gold. This will have a huge knock on effect now - fabric was a reasonable sized business so lots of people out of a job and lots of London based dj's with fewer bookings and fewer clubs in London to play in generally - this is going to set us back years and years as many dj's and creative people will no doubt think a lot more seriously about moving to Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon etc - the ones that haven't already - this ruling really sends a nasty message out and London was already falling behind the curve as it was.

2016 continues to get worse and worse!

Gutted and absolutely f***ing raging over this decision.

There was so much evidence stacking up that showed fabric in the best light possible, as a beacon of London’s nightlife not just by punters signing the petition but by big name DJ’s and promoters who had worked there for years. Not only that, but it was up there with the safest clubs, with gold standard security and on-site medical teams. I personally always felt safe there and staff were always helpful.

It was as cultural a landmark as much as any tourist hotspot and now it’s gone – well done Islington Council, in closing fabric you’ve not only done nothing to help the drug problem, you’ve arguably exacerbated the situation by giving young people less choice in where to go on the weekends. Not to mention shut down a key outlet for the more underground music scene in the capital.

Ultimately, this was never about the drugs though, it was a cruel vendetta from a council who had previously been beaten and had a chance to get their own back this time. Not to mention this:

Also, how can Sadiq Khan claim to be promoting and saving London’s nightlife when he withdraws straight away once people ask him to seriously weigh in on the issue, claiming it’s a “local council matter”. If he’s got no power to actually influence these decisions, he’s not saving anything – typical politician, all bark and no bite.

Much more I want to say, but will probably turn into mindless insults at this point…

This has really depressed and infuriated me. it's such backwards logic....kids get drunk in parks, lets shut down parks and blame the councils. Every festival, football game (see how many people do lines in the toilets at an away day), pub or even luxury hotel could be closed on this logic. councils just want to turn london in to a bland city of new builds.

The thing is, these people really cared about the club, how it was run, the sound, the dj's, pioneering new genres of music. These weren't people that put money first and punters later. That makes it so much harder to swallow. It's like the local council has trampled a flower with their size 11's...so upsetting.
