Employers/Employees

Another difficult thing for us is when all our staff want the same times off during the summer.

Even worse when they have kids which narrows it down even more.

Wouldn't you also agree that working in the service industry makes it very difficult to award lots of holiday days? I feel it is far easier to offer more holidays to white collar workers as it is often easier for them to forward plan and/or catch up their work around holiday periods.

We're so busy all the time, if someone's off i need to replace them with someone else, which means employing 'spares' or using agencies.

Indeed.

My workforce don't value 'soft' benefits anyway - they judge everything in pounds. They also will only produce when forced or incentivised to do so and will sneak off/slack off if allowed to.

No worries Chew - lock the door at lunchtime and tell them they've already had it.

And yes, I really would. (Although if it's established routine I would tell them first it's changing and then take the hard line if they follow)

Yep, and you can't be everywhere to watch over them. I've got staff out on 29 sites tomorrow so i'm best off just sitting here on Spotlight trusting the hell out of 'em

Being serious though. I make sure i give them targets every day and they know if they fail to achieve the targets they will have to catch it up by Friday. Sounds harsh, but it actually motivates them into finishing early on Friday's.

Backbone of society though aren't we Buckley?

;)

No Drew sounds like one of those bosses who keeps to his side of your employment contract but gets frustrated that don't want to honour your side of the bargain.

Contracts usually say in black and white that people must give at least four weeks notice of holidays and being allowed to go at the time requested is at the management's discretion.

If it's fair for you to argue against that is it fair if you don't get paid your contracted wage?

Well get this - most of ours are on a basic wage of £100 for a ten hour day, but our bonus system means that if they do 7.5 hrs worth of work in that day they then start to earn bonus money too!

I wasn't suggesting either of what Becki suggested, i was simply pointing out the difficulties we have to face with holidays

And for her info we've been in business 27 years and never been to a single tribunal.

Like i said, we've got 40'odd year old staff that have been with us since leaving school so we can't be all that bad.

;)

My boss tends to stroll in at 9.30, so if I'm ever late they cant moan :D

Isn't that a bit cock-eyed?

P.S. We also pay our staff £30 a week bonus if they turn in Monday to Friday. They don't lose it if they have a planned day off or if i feel them being off is a genuine reason.

if u see the amount of work i do and how much i bring in to this company (even with time spent on here). you'd get the arse ache too.

if i can slack and work, so can everyone.

BUT I WANT RESULTS TEAM!
