Election Day in the US of A

Oops...counted that backwards. 4am MST = 1am GMT. So no, I'm not missing anything!

sant jordi isn't renowned for its american diners, so it's wolf on the comp sadly for me.

pancakes and syrup, eggs over easy and a cosmo sounds like the way to do it in mockba tho pal.

Surely he cant have connections to Al Qaeda  I heard something along those lines but didnt look to much into it, was it just a rumour because of his Muslim roots, ie because you're muslim you must have Al Qaeda connections  :?:

Nah, McCain said it embarassingly when he was scrabling about for some sort of rebuttle. Seemingly the facts he based this judgement on were as some comedian put it, the fact that Barack, rhymed with Iraq. I think it didn't do McCain any favours at all, numpty. Although he has kept his Muslim roots on the downlow in relation to promoting his Christian background I think, unstandable but maybe not entirely honest ?

Isnt Obama a muslim?

Coz you never see him in a bowtie

Some people in his dad's family (and stepdad) were/are Muslim. It's been pretty widely reported. But it's really irrelevant, isn't it?

Religion is belief, and if you never believed in Islam then you've never been a Muslim. His mom was atheist or agnostic, I think, so that's how he was raised. He accepted Christianity later in life.

I've read literally thousands of articles on this campaign... don't remember him ever being linked with Al Qaeda. The closest the Republicans came to that was saying that people like Hamas and Al Qaeda would prefer an Obama presidency (inferring that McCain would be a tougher president)

Volunteered to work all tonight so i can get a better idea of our departments night-time activities......or get paid for watching the election on telly all night ;) :D

Gonna be a long night!
The more i see of McCain, the more of an old duffer i think he is! Why would any1 look at him & think he's the man!
He looks like Steve Martins Grandfather!:D

Never thought I'd see it in my lifetime, to be honest.

And the irony is, the state of Virginia might go Democratic for the first time in 44 years and be the one to put Obama over the top. This is the same state where, 40-something years ago, my mom's school district shut itself down rather than comply with a Supreme Court ruling to integrate schools. I can't imagine how my parents feel.

Thing about Obama, though, is he's not just black. He's also white. His half-sister is Asian. He's christian while his dad's family is Muslim. In a way, he is the face of a multi-cultural, global society. If he can't bring people together, I'm not sure who can...

Morbyd, everything you said here and previously is right on the money:). The world needs the USA to be brave and vote Obama, we need someone like him now more than ever... Thanks for giving us the American perspective so lucidly. Like you, I am holding my breath, after all, anything could still happen:rolleyes:

It's not relevant at all but to me, a non American, non black person nor is him being black and every journalist is talking about the first black president, blah blah blah. Granted, it shows the country has moved on, moved forward etc. but making such a big deal over it is still contributing to the general problem of racism, just because it's positive doesn't change the fact that people are distinguishing him due to his skin colour.

And I definately heard, something on telly about Al Qaeda.

Well Morbyd knows I voted for McCain....and I just wanted to say that no, Obama is not a Muslim (he is a Christian) but he has had certain questionable relationships with radical and extremists organizations (religious and political). He is also the least known about presidential candidate in U.S. history and a one time senator with the most liberal voting record, and a political record that pales in comparison to McCain. Yes, change can be good--but what *kind* of change are we talking about here? The ideals of this country are set on a path towards Socialism with Obama as our president.

I guess that being an *excellent* orator and smooth talker with celebrity friends really can get you ahead in this country..... unbelievable.

Morbyd--I'm sure you'll be living it up, so congrats to you...

You've just repeated verbatim all of the McCain campaign's talking points, Miss F

Socialism? Everyone knows Obama is nowhere near being a socialist. Socialism involves government control of the means of production...something you won't find in any of Obama's proposals. If you're talking about the tax system, he's proposed returning the tax brackets to the way they were in the 1990s beginnig with Bush Sr... hardly our most socialist period!

LOL Morbyd--I was just breaking it down for all the non-U.S.ers on the forum since they get to hear an awful lot about why Obama is so great..... 8)

Socialism and taxes? How about this from Obama's site:

Families making more than $250,000 will pay either the same or lower tax rates than they paid in the 1990s. Obama will ask the wealthiest 2% of families to give back a portion of the tax cuts they have received over the past eight years to ensure WE ARE RESTORING FAIRNESS and returning to fiscal responsibility. But no family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 1990s. In fact, dividend rates would be 39 percent lower than what President Bush proposed in his 2001 tax cut.

So, with the current rate of inflation at nearly 5%, the average double income family will make about $150,000... and at a 5% increase over 8 years (time over which effects will be seen)....thats about $221,000 for the average family....and not to mention the adverse effects on small business, which then will only compound to our economic problems (i.e. trickle down economics--higher taxes = less jobs. Sounds like the road to Socialism...."redistributing the wealth" for which he has actually been quoted saying he thinks is a good idea....

Come on Obama! :D

Shame his Grandma couldn't make it to see him win :(

jesus, thanks for breaking it down me, jsut another non-U.S.er here without a clue what's going on unless i've heard someone in the media tell me how great obama is or that morbyd might talk about.

hmmmmmm.......

the road to socialism.........sh!t :eek::eek::eek: quick call ghostbusters. socialism....the devil's politics, the incarnation of lucifer himself.

nah, let's vote McCain and let big business run the show (again).....hey and why not give 'em a tax break too. after all, it's not like we're in the economic sh!t is it and they could do with the extra cash. after all, they've spent everything they got from our terrorist exploits in another country.

god bless americans

I'll be glad when this is all over as im sick to death of it being constanly on the news, you'd think there isn't anything else going on in the world.

Whilst i would favour Obama to win and i believe he will do, one has to wonder how many millions will vote because of his colour and know little or nothing about his actual policies or even who his running mate is, bit tragic really but then again this is the USA, still you cant get much worse than George Bush and hopefully if/when Obama gets into office he'll pull the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, etc.

Sorry grego, "breaking it down" was not meant as an insult at all...I just wanted to state a different perspective and point of view since I seem to be the only one participating in this forum that has one.
