TWO Birmingham men have been arrested in a major £11 million drugs bust near the Mediterranean party island of Ibiza.

In a dramatic operation, Spanish customs officers boarded a British-registered fishing vessel, the Quiet Waters, and overpowered the crew before carrying out a search.

Police say they found a 125 bales of hashish weighing a total of 3.7 tonnes and worth £11.1 million on the black market. It is the biggest haul seized off Ibiza for 17 years.

The operation took place between Ibiza and the smaller island of Formentera just before midnight on Tuesday. Police said four Britons and a Moroccan were arrested after the 59ft Quiet Waters was boarded by Spanish customs officers.

They were handed over to the national police when the Customs patrol vessel arrived in Ibiza.

They named the Britons being detained as Earl Edwin Bridge, aged 45, and Wayne Robert Bridge, 44, both from Birmingham; James Alexander Cootes, 22, from Brecon, south Wales, and Andrew William John Coventry, 41, from Manchester.

Jose Manuel Bar, Spain's director of state administration for the Balearic Islands, said the drugs had been brought from North Africa and were on their way to the European market.

Okay

NO silvia.. I KNOW there is more to ibiza than clubbing..
everyone is confusing what I am saying..
and I cant seem to make my point across ...
so I think I will give it a rest..
I know there is much more to IBIZA than clubs! and I will be enjoying those other events.. I know there is more to see on IBIZA than inside PARCHA! its an island with tropical weather and blue water and white sand. thats why I am going!
to get away from the 12million peole concrete jungle I live in..
the clubbing is another option..
I wouldnt fly 15 hours to go sit in a nightclub all day on drugs!!
as you just stated above.. there is more to do on ibiza than do drugs..
and my arguement was.. that many people do come to do drugs..
and many do come to not do drugs..
so I really dont understand why everyone is slamming me!
sure someone pointed out that the ratio was 4-1 I never knew that!
thats great! now I know..

I've been into the clubbing scene/music etc for around 6 years and it was my dream to go to ibiza, basically because its one of the only places that manages to cultivate extraordinary world class events and is one of the only places in the world where you could stay for 2 weeks and see the best top 10 Djs in the world and get a Tan at the same time.

I am from South Africa and a group of us went to Ibiza for the clubs this year for 10 days. I had read most of the arguments in this topic and will give a little point of view. Firstly, yes... Ibiza is probably known worldwide more for its clubs than anything else aand thats the outbound truth. In my country if you ask anybody or mention the name "Ibiza", they instantly think of parties etc.

This is what i thought it was like, and once i had arrived in Ibiza i was most certainly astonished as to how much more there was to the Island, than most notably the clubs. There were the most beautiful beaches i had ever seen.. such as Cala Conta etc etc with all the beautiful coves and especially Es Vedra, we did the boat trip and it was amazing.

So yes, there is most definately a hell of alot more to Ibiza than JUST the clubs, but if you are looking at a large scale and arguing the fact that on a worldwide and general scale, Ibiza is stereotyped as an island which is catered for the party animals.. however for those who have been there you will now obviously be more aware of the hidden beauties which grace this beautiful island.....

I feel that there would most notably be a decrease in tourism etc should the clubbing scene be ruined, however i have been involved with friends and people in the clubbing scene and im sorry to say that there are at least 8 out of 10 people in the ibiza clubs who are on something recreational (drugs). I dont feel that should this be stopped that the island would necessarily fall on its knees, because yes there are families who go there for their holidays etc.. and i think the local community and neighbouring lands such as Spanish Mainland will keep it alive, but the island definately would'nt be any better or special than something ordinary like St Tropez.

This is my 2 cents and hopefully some people agree with me. If you dont like what i had to say then you are very narrow minded.

Drugs A Concern.
A recent survey seemingly showed that residents on Ibiza are worried most about the drug problem on the island & its affect on youngsters. The next main concern of the local people is apparently the growing level insecurity on the island which they feel, followed by worries about the perceived increase in immigration. Another major concern appears to be the problems families face to make ends meet & maintain living standards whilst trying to make their earnings last till the end of each month.

Illegal Eclipse Party Stopped.
Police were alerted to an illegal fiesta taking place in the Sant Rafael area of the island when country lanes near the location of the party supposedly became blocked by cars of the thousand plus persons attending the event. At 7pm the police moved in to stop the fiesta which supposedly started at 11am & was being held to celebrate the eclipse of the sun by the moon.

from the ibiza sun:

Major Drugs Bust On The Island.
Last week Police, acting in conjunction in Italy, Spain, France, Holland, South America & Ibiza, swooped on the operations of an international drug gang, which they had been investigating for over 2 years. On the island there were detentions of 5 major gang members, 3 Italians & 2 South Americans all with alleged connections with the Italian Mafia.
It appears that the gang used Ibiza as their centre for processing cocaine paste into powder for sale on the streets throughout Europe & especially Italy. The cocaine paste is thought to have arrived from South America to Valencia hid amongst legitimate exports of charcoal & was then brought to Ibiza for treatment at a laboratory set up in a flat in the Avenida 8 Agosto on the outskirts of Eivissa Town. The processed cocaine was then stored at rented premises & on yachts on the island. Later the drugs were smuggled to Italy & other locations in specially adapted cars & sometimes in container Lorries whilst some remained on the island for sale here.
Police believe that the gang in Eivissa manufactured the drug to order after they received calls from other gang members in other locations saying that they needed so much cocaine to sell that week. When they raided the various premises used by the gang in Eivissa they found lots of cocaine but also over €1 million in cash. They also discovered lots of English pounds which the police think could signify that the gang was selling drugs to British drug dealers on the island. These British drug dealers then supposedly used their network of pushers to sell the drugs to tourists & residents.
In the raids, which took place all over Europe, 60 people were detained whilst 1500 kilos of cocaine & 1500 ecstasy pills were found. Later in the week the GEN environmentalist group on the island used these arrests to point out that one of the detained men owned 4 estate agents on the island. They said that the liberal policies of the local administrations in allowing lots of building development to take place was making it easy for criminals to use real estate on Ibiza as a way of cleaning their earnings from crime & drug dealing.
