Interestingly the RNLI gets a large proportion of its income from legacies. There has been some contrversy over the amount that the RNLI has been holding in reserves (money which a charity keeps in its bank account to cover it should its income drop suddenly). At one point the RNLI had 22 months reserves.Drew said:Scoobie said:naddyz said:lots of people donating to animal charities here. Nothing wrong with that but it does surprise me how much people prefer to give to animal charities than to charities that protect children or other humans. Does anyone else notice this? I'm sure I read somewhere that animal charities get far more than children charities.
This thread has reminded me that my donation to Oxfam is about to run out.![]()
No thats not true. For anyone who's interested this is the top 10 charities in the UK by voluntary income. Bear in mind that they may earn money on top of this from other sources such as government contracts and trading activities.
voluntary income in millions:
Cancer Research UK 306.427
The National Trust 143.751
Oxfam 133.900
The British Heart Foundation 119.362
Royal National Lifeboat Institution 91.300
The Salvation Army 90.899
Macmillan Cancer Relief 84.299
NSPCC 81.754
RSPCA 76.043
Save the Children (UK) 69.958
Some strange priorities there.

Kids have social services - animals get nowt. That's my (probably very blinkered) view! I can't help it, it's just where my loyalties lie.

I never sponsor people doing runs/walks/whatever for cancer research...and that table shows exactly why!! They get massive amounts of money, there are lots more deserving cancer charities. People should look into other cancer related charities that really need the money when they do sponsored things.....rather than just swell the already fat coffers of the main one....which incidently wastes millions of pounds on admin/bureucracy/swish offices etc![]()
Anyway, rant over![]()

Sponsor a child in Africa (i can't remmeber which country it is) through Plan international. I think it's £25 a month.
Give regularly to Victim Support, and help them out a lot. This is a massively deserving charity that really needs all the money it can get. Anyone who's ever been a victim of crime and had their help or given evidence in court and been helped by the Witness Service (run by them) will back me up on this. I was going to walk accross the Sahara dessert raising money for them in October/November but i can't because my feet are fooked![]()
Give £5 a month to the Samaritans.

Lost in translation again Silvia!!! I'm saying give to other cancer charities not just the ONE that gets the most press. This one big one does not need the money, look at the table, it gets loads already. Other, smaller cancer cahrities struggle and are desperate for money but hardly get any compared to cancer research because people always automatically give money to that big one. Hospitals like Christies who i posted a thread about recently, who are very very close to a cure for cancer are crying out for money but aren't getting it because so many people just give to Cancer research without thinking of other cancer charities/appeals....
Of course your dad didn't die of cancer![]()

But the whole point of donating is to give to the charity close to your heart. Cancer effects most people at some stage and this is probably why cancer research gets so much money?

Yes, so if you want to give to a cancer charity, think/look a little further than the one that comes to mind first...i.e. cancer research.
Cancer research is ONE actual charity, not the whole group of charites that support/help people with cancer.
Get what i'm saying now?
