Do you regularly donate to any charities?

lots of people donating to animal charities here. Nothing wrong with that but it does surprise me how much people prefer to give to animal charities than to charities that protect children or other humans. Does anyone else notice this? I'm sure I read somewhere that animal charities get far more than children charities.

This thread has reminded me that my donation to Oxfam is about to run out.

No thats not true. For anyone who's interested this is the top 10 charities in the UK by voluntary income. Bear in mind that they may earn money on top of this from other sources such as government contracts and trading activities.

voluntary income in millions:

Cancer Research UK 306.427
The National Trust 143.751
Oxfam 133.900
The British Heart Foundation 119.362
Royal National Lifeboat Institution 91.300
The Salvation Army 90.899
Macmillan Cancer Relief 84.299
NSPCC 81.754
RSPCA 76.043

Save the Children (UK) 69.958

Some strange priorities there.

Interestingly the RNLI gets a large proportion of its income from legacies. There has been some contrversy over the amount that the RNLI has been holding in reserves (money which a charity keeps in its bank account to cover it should its income drop suddenly). At one point the RNLI had 22 months reserves. 8O

Kids have social services - animals get nowt. That's my (probably very blinkered) view! I can't help it, it's just where my loyalties lie.

Second that emotion Rob

I give to PDSA, RSPCA, NCDL and Cancer Charities.

Between me and my other half we give monthly to Friends of the earth, water aid, Mind, RSPB (that one is Dom's choice) Green peace. oh and we have an adopted panda and orangutang

Do gooding sods! :?

Do NOT frickin diss the RNLI

I never sponsor people doing runs/walks/whatever for cancer research...and that table shows exactly why!! They get massive amounts of money, there are lots more deserving cancer charities. People should look into other cancer related charities that really need the money when they do sponsored things.....rather than just swell the already fat coffers of the main one....which incidently wastes millions of pounds on admin/bureucracy/swish offices etc

Anyway, rant over

I...

Sponsor a child in Africa (i can't remmeber which country it is  ) through Plan international. I think it's £25 a month.

Give regularly to Victim Support, and help them out a lot. This is a massively deserving charity that really needs all the money it can get. Anyone who's ever been a victim of crime and had their help or given evidence in court and been helped by the Witness Service (run by them) will back me up on this. I was going to walk accross the Sahara dessert raising money for them in October/November but i can't because my feet are fooked :(

Give £5 a month to the Samaritans.

But the whole point of donating is to give to the charity close to your heart. Cancer effects most people at some stage and this is probably why cancer research gets so much money?

Lost in translation again Silvia!!! I'm saying give to other cancer charities not just the ONE that gets the most press. This one big one does not need the money, look at the table, it gets loads already. Other, smaller cancer cahrities struggle and are desperate for money but hardly get any compared to cancer research because people always automatically give money to that big one. Hospitals like Christies who i posted a thread about recently, who are very very close to a cure for cancer are crying out for money but aren't getting it because so many people just give to Cancer research without thinking of other cancer charities/appeals....

Of course your dad didn't die of cancer

Yes, so if you want to give to a cancer charity, think/look a little further than the one that comes to mind first...i.e. cancer research.

Cancer research is ONE actual charity, not the whole group of charites that support/help people with cancer.

Get what i'm saying now?

Only St John's ambulance, Fire brigade and Cancer research. But not regular, only when they're collecting...

Selfish reason is that they're the only ones that've ever been a part of my life (Cancer research probably will be in the future)...

.

the RNLI does great work. Their reserves policy however was an absolute disgrace that caused untold amounts of grief for people working in fundraising across the charitable sector. This is why the charity comission became involved, and they were advised that they were in breach of charity commission guidelines.

I understand that their trustees are now working to try and rectify the sdituation.

Yes I get what you mean.

I sponsor a dog with Dogs Trust called Tia, she can't be rehomed due to be allergic to everything, even grass.
And give I give monthly to NSPCC & regularly to Cerebra.
Instead of a wedding list we're asking people to donate to our local animal shelter where we got our dog from.

having done work for Cancer charities, they do waste an awful amount of money, mostly on the basis that they cant make up theyre frickin minds.

^ Sandi

Ah right, cool, didn't mean to sound condescending ;)

I think a lot of people though, when asked to give to/sponsor people raising money for Cancer Research do actually think that that means the whole group of/range of Cancer charities, not the One specific charity that it is which is partly why they get so much more than the others - twice as much as the 2nd in the table!

£5 a month to Cancer Research
£5 a month to Diabetes UK

I started giving money to cancer research after a good family friend died of cancer, and give money to Diabetes UK as my OH has type 1 diabetes.
