Come in from the cold and party like you’re in Ibiza
Friday, 16 January 2009
A little piece of bright, Balearic sunshine arrives in gloomy, cold Belfast this weekend.
Could the timing be any better? asks Patric Baird
WHAT better way to forget the cold and damp January weather of the post-festive season comedown
than with a healthy dose of Ibizan-flavoured music,
courtesy of one of the sunshine island's best-loved mixers?
Long-established as one of Ibiza's greatest clubbing legends,
Circo Loco has been a hedonistic haven on the Balearic isle's after-party club circuit
for the best part of a decade.
With its current base in DC10 having been on borrowed time during recent years,
due to the authorities' draconian crackdown on the after-hours party scene,
the Circo Loco brand have wisely been broadening their horizons.
Its roster of residents have gone beyond entertaining the island's holiday crowds
by expanding their feel-good and extravagant ‘crazy circus’ parties
to venues across the world.
One of the club's chief decksmiths is Italian DJ Davide Squillace who arrives
in Belfast's Stiff Kitten tomorrow night, armed with a selection of sun-kissed grooves,
guaranteed to chase away the winter blues.
Squillace has been hosting the club's Monday morning parties in Ibiza every summer,
as well as maintaining a hectic year-round touring schedule,
both individually and as part of the Circo Loco world tours.
He's best known for his melodic tech house and deep minimal sound,
regularly on show at parties as far afield as London club The End a
nd at the USA's annual Miami Winter Music Conference bashes.
A qualified sound engineer, Squillace's production credits include working on
Josh Wink’s Ovum output, as well as contributions
to the Spanish dance music label CMYK.
He also set up his own Sketch Project, allowing him free reign to work on
and release his own material, a modern and refreshing take on techno music
which has now become a permanent fixture on the playlist
of most of the world's biggest DJs.
Expect a dynamic set tomorrow night, with a light and fast mix,
infused with a solid musical strength contrasting with the style
of local support DJ team The Jet Project.
Doors open at 10pm with admission set at a tenner.
