Pvd is pure class, such epic tunes! The way the main room erupts is something else. I ended up seeing Blasterjaxx as well, I liked them and I remember they were dressed as power rangers. Memories haha. I was supposed to see Kearney but I met this girl and all plans were out the window. The terrace is so epic as well. Such a good night!!!

I'm envious of your plans mate, seems perfect, the mrs and then the boys, best of both worlds. I'm back at the same time in early July. If I didn't live in Australia and had to work i would've done the radio one weekend. I think Privilege may have a trance/edm night that week as well. You'll have a great time no doubt.

yeah they were dressed as power rangers, and they played they're remix of tiesto's lethal industry. I'm there from the 28th july until the 2nd of August so can't wait, I'm away with the wife 4 weeks tomorrow. best of both worlds in deed this summer will be my 9th time.

What dates are you there from?, you on facebook?

Hahah epic!! I'll be there from June 30- July 12. I'll send you a pm with my fb.

you have a very different perception of what 'packed' means than the club owners'.

both events were certainly busy, but packed is something pretty different in ibiza.

I saw Armin at Privilege 3 times over 2 seperate holidays in 2013 and twice Privilege was sold out. I also went to see him at Ushuaia twice last year in September inc closing and it was as busy as the Axwell nights i had been to the previous year. It was silly mobbed

Jesus, I don't log on for one day and this thread goes nuts.

for me it started to go downhill when all the vocal tracks started being popular. not the ones with vocal samples, but actual men (or rather) women singing to the tunes. then it also got all so mellow and now often it's trousey/edm-y.

I loved the old trance which was either progressive stuff (so we're talking the old sasha/digweed days when they included trancey stuff as well - but not the 'epic' trance of course, also nick warren and so on) or then full on banging trance à la push, old days of ferry, hell even tiesto and many many more. I used to love that (and I still like listening to those old tunes).

nowadays I just can't find that stuff anymore (I mean new productions) but at the same time I also have to admit I'm not after these sounds anymore; I still very much like melodic tracks, but generally I want it deeper nowadays (techno mostly).

The newer productions for me have been ok, but they don't tick the boxes quite like the older tracks do.

Annoyed. Finally booked my holiday the other day for the second week in September, just before the Cream line-ups were announced, and now that they are I find I will be there on pretty much the ONLY week in the whole season without either Paul van Dyk or Eric Prydz, and to make it worse Above & Beyond are headlining! I seem to be the only person in the world who doesn't care for A&B but I genuinely find their own productions to be boring and pretentious and to feature incredibly dull vocals and vocalists. Hopefully they'll stick to playing other people's tunes. Seriously, is it just me? Anyone else not that fussed about them?

I'll still go of course and I'll probably have a great time. But I feel like I've gone all in on a pair of aces and lost the lot!

What happened to the popularity of trance exactly? I'm a younger lad so I'm not too aware of the history, but it seems like trance was on top of the world in the late 90s/ early 00s, or is that just my imagination?

Tunes like Liberation Angel and I Feel Wonderful just melt me. Can anything move a room like those tunes must've back in the day? Feels like I missed out.

Trance absolutely was on top of the world in the late 1990s and early 2000s - it was massive. You regularly had trance tunes in the top 10 (mostly commercial/vocal trance admittedly - but not always), it was used for tv themes (Big Brother is the most obvious, but there were others), there were dedicated trance clubs full every weekend - not just in Ibiza, but in England, Germany and of course Holland.

I'm not totally sure "what happened", to be honest. I suppose like any genre that has a peak, it had a dip afterwards, but it seems to have been on a downward trajectory ever since with no real resurgence.

It might sound strange, but I think 9/11 had some kind of impact - the super-optimistic feel of trance at the time seemed to go away after 2001. Might have been a coincidence but I'm not sure. Tiesto and Oakenfold got old and lazy. The technology changed and the warm sounds of 90s trance gave way to clinical, mechanical-sounding tones. The age of the superclubs passed (some closed, some burned down, the clubbing kids of the 1990s grew up). Don't know - lots of little things and a few big ones. The popular perception of trance as "cheesy" probably didn't help - the general public identified it with things like Ian Van Dahl and Lasgo and that certainly didn't help.

Armin van Buuren was immense for many years (roughly, 1998-2006) and was a great figurehead for the genre, but he's gone the same way as Tiesto now - I can't even listen to his releases any more. Ferry Corsten is a legend but I'm saddened by how marginalised a figure even he's become in Ibiza over the last few years. I saw him headlining Cream in 2009 and it was just out of this world. Blew my mind really.

I'm still hopeful it will come back in some form. But maybe this won't be in Ibiza.

Don't abandon all hope - look at what I found on YouTube the other day.

Kind of backs up my suspicion that even if it fades away elsewhere, trance will have a future in its homeland (i.e. the Netherlands). Also hats off to Steve Helstrip (The Thrillseekers) - he's a purist who has never yielded an inch to the trouse/tech/EDM/whatever forces of darkness.

Now I don't think there's a single track in that set more recent than about 2003, and I know you can't base the future of a genre/club/dj on just playing the old classics night after night, but who's to say you couldn't mix up old and new?

Anyway, I'd never heard of Luminosity before. But having seen that video I'm seriously tempted to go this year. It's a daytime festival which isn't ideal, but still.

Lump is the best trance event I've been too. Been to it a few times and would have been heading back next year if I wasn't at a wedding. The venue Beach club Fuel in bloomendal near Zandvoort is fantastic. Made even better by the sunset. Last year's was the first I'd been to there for a luminosity beach being held their but had been to fuel previous for Menno Solo 2 years ago and will be heading there for Menno Solo again this year. the previous lumi's I'd been to had been a mile down the beach at beach club riche. Luminosity is all about the atmosphere and people. It does help that the lineups they have are pretty on the money and they tend to push upcoming artists. Remember one year about 4 or 5 years back in the smallest arena of lumi it getting smashed to bits by Arctic Moon and Bjorn Akesson when both were just starting to get big then Kearney absolutely destroying it closing the night.

Don't let the daytime put you off lumi either. It works fantastically with it being a beach festival. Same with Menno Solo at the same venue. The sun sets right behind you so you have quality music and watch the sun set. Menno solo was immense the and that was 4pm till1am loads of housey melodic stuff and prog early on with the sun blasting then it getting harder as the sun set then eventually was banging as full come 10pm

As for trance if you avoid the likes of Armin Ferry and even PVD then you will still find quality stuff. It's just not from the big names. At the last Luminosity the best sets I heard all weekend were the Thrillseekers who you posted then probably Menno. Johan Ekman and ReOrder.

Back on Cream the lineup on the 3rd is great for the ITE weekend happy with JOC Kearney and Suckley. Should be a good start to the holiday for trance along with Captured and a potential massive Lineup on driftwoods boat. I just hope that Sunk returns as I didn't go to Ibiza last year and Sunk pretty much nailed their lineups as to what Trance is about this days.

Trance is just waiting for a re branding lol then its off again, a brilliant big room sound but yeah promoters cant afford to have one bad year, so trance what ever its called in 3 or 4 years time will be back as its natural home is the club, sounds shit at home on the decks or on the radio even.

Cheers Aaron. I feel embarrassed for not having heard of what is clearly a pretty major event! To be honest, for me it's Ibiza and a couple of nights out per year in London, I should get out a bit more. What happened to Akesson by the way? "Perfect Blue" is one of the best trance records I've ever heard but I haven't noticed him doing much in the way of DJing.

Oh yes, no Giuseppe Ottaviani at Cream this year either. I hope that's his choice and not a case of him being dropped, he's one of the best in the business.

Bit gutted the closing is the 17th as it is by birthday the following week 21 (plus 19). Is this the earliest Cream closing party? Seems like only 15 years ago they were going into October!
