Yeah agreed - we had a trip booked to Barbados next month that at the time needed a negative test up to 72 hours before - which cost about £150 but not terrible... however they also introduced that you also need a test when you arrive and quarantine until you get a negative test which is 2-3 days but just not worth it coupled with potential of a positive result between the first and second test

I think we will see the requirements for negative tests before travel for a good while

For me, it's not just about 'scraping' a holiday abroad. Until it actually feels like 'fun' - from arriving at the airport to what you can do at your destination - I'm not sure what the point is.

Completely agree. The airport section of the holiday has already become not much fun over the last couple of decades with the anti-terrorism rules and 'race to the bottom' from the cheap airlines, with these measures it will be torture with big crowds.

And then if once you've arrived and the heat hits you and you just want to dump your bags ans get out and enjoy it, you're having to go for a test and then stay in til the result is back...suddenly staying home sounds more fun.

Might not be a bad thing next year staying in the UK for a holiday... The economy sure needs it!

On this point - I guess it depends on how intrusive you find the additional measures.

We went to Italy in August for a weekend. Masks inside the airport were uncomfortable but because of the reduced numbers of people there, we actually found it bearable because we were able to do things we couldn't usually do - like find a seat or not have to queue for the loo. Masks on the plane weren't a pain because it was a short flight and we slept for some of it. Temperature checks on arrival.

We chose to wear a mask walking about in some areas because of how crowded it was, and in the key tourist areas there were actively asking you to do so (if you were queuing etc...). In restaurants they were militant with it, if you forgot when you walked in you'd soon be told, and likewise if you're away from your table they'll pull you up on it. But it's surprising how quickly you just get used to it and it doesn't become an issue.

If I could guarantee another trip like that one I'd be booking it now - but the more I've thought about it, the more I've talked myself out of it. For everyone saying they don't to risk being stuck overseas stuck in a hotel for 2 weeks - that's the least of my concerns, what if you get it really bad? I'd dread being stuck overseas, particularly with a partner, and either of us have to be hospitalised with it.

Interesting to hear feedback from someone has made a trip recently.

My biggest fear in holiday resorts is that their hospitals can't handle cases of Corona or many cases of Corona, as usually their patients are treated for cuts and grazes and nothing major. But i suppose its no different in Britain, our seaside hospitals are usually juat minor injury units.

True although covid seems to be worse as the ACE2 receptor it uses to enter cells is found throughout the body, which is one reason there are some "weird" side effects becoming apparent.

high level article explaining some of it:

thanks I’ll have a read of that. Always a bit wary of posting about what’s going on, such a divisive and emotive subject and at the end of the day I’m only reading shit that I read the same as everyone else.

The thing with the ACE2 receptor, am I right in thinking that’s where supplementing with Vit D could be beneficial? Been a while since I watched it but Dr Rhonda Patrick chatting with Joe Rogan a while back and Vit D for covid was discussed.

The ACE2 is a specific "shaped doorway" which is found in many cells in the body. Covid has a "lock pick" as it where to get in when it shouldn't.

The BBC article mentions how covid tricks and fools the immune system into not seeing it, which can lead to problems.

In people who have moderate to severe disease, when the immune system eventually sees it, goes berserk (see cytokine storm too). Vitamin D plays a part in proper immune function & helps moderate the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Low levels of vitamin D seems to play a role in RAS not working right.
Bit more about it here:

the short of it is there isn't 100% evidence vitamin D will help with covid, but is known to help with immune system function. So a bottle of 180 one a day tablets for £3 is a no brainer for me.

Still not sure there is a final answer, 'Science' are as always reluctant to confirm anything until they are absolutely sure. But there was some guidance about taking VitaminD due to being locked down indoors, and more BAME people with darker skin (and therefore less ability to get Vitamin D from the Sun) have suffered with Covid.

Might have put on here before so apologies if its a repeat...but ive taken VitaminD in winter for a couple of years as I get down in Winter. I am very much a summer person and I think it has helped my mood.

I was lucky enough to get away twice this year and had two totally varying experiences. We had Mykonos for our first trip. Because of their random testing at the airport I was a bag of nerves in the lead up. Was never able to get excited. And all the build up in the airport and the weeks of planning for me is a part of the joy for holidays for me was gone. However when we got there Mykonos was a lot more relaxed. Other than shops and and taxi rides with masks I felt like I was on holiday and forgot all the stuff that was going on with the world.

then our next trip was Ibiza. After set back after setback in terms of restrictions being added weekly by the time we had gone. Losing half of the crowd we were going with because of UK quarantine I was still determined to go because of my love for the island and being lucky enough to work from home. knowing full well it would be different this year it was still hard to take. I could handle the masks in shops and taxis. But the walking around the street with one was just one step too far. It wasn’t enjoyable to be classed a holiday. sat at the pool and then having to put a mask on just to order a drink was so frustrating. I’m glad I went just to go and support the island but it was hard to class it a holiday to be honest

Yes I know what you mean... Will be a pain in the arse

Holidaying is not going to be like before for a long while... A lot to think about insurance to cover COVID, testing etc, maybe quaratining still if not lifted, everyone will have to weigh up the options before they go abroad

Holidaying in home countries might be a viable option for 2021
Remembering that all those good people who voted Brexit have now cost us our EHIC card, meaning insurance companies can charge us what they like, may or may not cover us for covid (or similar) and may or may not cover us if we have had covid.
