we are actually well in front of Israel now in the UAE, anyone can basically go on line and book an appointment to get a shot or you can queue up at a drive thru. I actually did my 2 doses through my work who set up a vaccine centre in the office. We are approaching herd community as about 50% have had both. They’ve done very well here from the start

The benefits of wealth and a small population alongside taking up supply offers from China I guess ... some of the Greek islands have already offered a vaccine to all eligible adults too now in anticipation of a successful Summer tourist Season. Bahrain offered pfizer to all preliminary attendees from F1 / Grand Prix but the UK lot refused on ethical prioritization grounds compared to UK's progress ... not sure given increasing evidence on the positive impact of vaccination on reducing transmission how I feel about that !

Have UAE counted all the low paid migrant workers from the Indian subcontinent in their 50% too or just middle tier expats / foreign investors and second home owners alongside native Emiratis ? It does beg the question if what they are reporting is true why Dubai is on UK's quarantine red list unless it's because SA variant has got a hold there already !

I 100% believe what they tell us - they have been upfront from the start (ie we had a spike after these idiots came for Christmas/New Year and we are still paying for it - although its managed and economy still open etc) actually they went to labour camps with vaccines first believe it or not! Funnily enough uae nationals and over 65’s can get the Phiser one, the rest of us get Sinopharm (ie the Chinese one)

Ps... on a quarantine list as it’s a hub and all sorts transit through

So being vaccinated will save you having to have a PCR test for travel to Greece this Summer which obviously removes a load of cost and hasstle. Let's see if Spain follow the same path.

They've stated that any delays in the steps will delay the following steps. Seems prudent to extend it longer than June.

Not sure why September though

I think people are being very naive thinking that June will be back to normal.

Lots of people getting excited that festivals are preparing to go ahead etc but surely common sense would predict that it's going to be severely reduced capacity??

The government plans are for there to be no social distancing rules post June 21st?

Some folks on twitter have calculated we may have the capacity to offer every adult a dose by the end of May. Which would tie in nicely with the “3 weeks for protection” taking us to June 21st.

Not sure naive is the word, but overly optimistic maybe.

Regarding festivals though, the ones that have said they are going ahead after June, have had assurances from the relevant authorities that it is possible. I've got rolled over tickets for Camp Bestival at the end of July, they said the phone was running red hot the day after Boris' roadmap, calling MP's, local council etc...and every one gave them the green light. So unless numbers start going up again, I can't see any reason why it won't happen as planned...

Yes, the problem is those will need the second vax to be fully protected. But the first should be enough for "normality"- hopefully those getting covid after the vax will only be a little bit ill at worst.
I'm reading though that a third jab may be necessary in September if it needs tweaking. I'm happy with that but it could complicate issues if resorts insist on vax certificates later in the year and some have one jab, some two, and some maybe three?!!

As long as its not those awful cages people were made to stay in at some events last year

Indeed but those in the lower age cohorts also need the least amount of protection, given this is a very much a disease which is mostly affected by age.

One dose cuts the need for hospitalisation by 80% in older folks, who will typically generate a weaker immune response than of us in our 30’s.

I wouldn’t worry about the prospect of a third jab just yet. I expect if it is needed, it’ll only be offered to those vulnerable groups who are traditionally offered the flu jab to boost their protection and the rest of us will be more than capable of dealing with covid post jab if we get it.

The government can’t and won’t try and stop everyone dying. They will protect those most at need with the main aim of keeping folk out of hospital.

If the UK keeps its vaccination pace and the effort does not get derailed by a new mutation resistant to existing vaccines, things can very well get back to normal in the UK this June (including festivals).

Now for us on the continent, things aren't looking as rosy - looks like Brits on vacation in Spain aren't going to be disturbed by evil Germans snatching away sunloungers this year :(
