well I'm sure that if the hotel is closed during the planned period they'll have to refund you - either that or at least make it possible for you to use the booking for a different date. anything else can't be legal can it?
Depends on the cancellation policy... With my company we want the property owners to refund but we can't force them so cancellation policy comes into play

You think with hotels they would refund but I think it may be the same... Booking. Com aren't refunding I think unless in cancelation policy

In practice: not very brutal. They are working on bailout legislation that will likely be announced in a few hours.

Will likely cut checks to families for a few thousand$$$ monthly until this passes, but most will go to industry (as per usual).

I know it won't win me any free shots of hierbas around here, but I can't help shake the feeling our fears and emotions are being used.?
We will be getting taxed within an inch of our lives in order to avoid hyper inflation. Interest rates will rise significantly. NI will increase to cover the NHS deficit. Economically, this is the quiet before the storm.

Couldn’t agree more LBS, I can see very high tax and NI and even more cuts to services.

There will have to be mate. At least the way this has been handled means many will have a job or one to return to. It’s actually the big money sectors and management that are most likely to suffer the consequences this time in terms of employment and tax. As you say, fit everyone else the impact will be felt in cuts to services.

Sadly that just can’t happen.

Why not? The response to the coronavirus proves responses can happen that you didn't think possible. IMO the response to the climate emergency should be just as intense and as quick. We can use transport less and work from home, we can take less flights... And there is absolutely no reason why systems can't change and resources be shared more equally either. ?

Debt is always owed to someone. Sadly economics just doesn’t work like that. It’s impossible to press reset on it otherwise it would happen during every worldwide recession. The debt is always owed somewhere. Tax and interest rates are always the solution to manage western economies.

I'll go for my weekly shop tomorrow - trying to figure out the best time to hit the supermarket. Would rather have less choice on the shelves than have to stand in a queue for ages. Managed to pick up a packet of pasta and a tin of tomatoes and the village shop this morning. Plus beer/cider, obviously.

Probs best to go lateish afternoon. That's what I did on Monday and they'd restocked quite a bit of stuff during the day at Tesco. Obviously flour, hand sanitizers and most meat/fish had gone but you could get small quantities of almost everything else. Really quiet.

You are both right, it is possible but somebody's gotta lose.

(cant look at that fist the same way after the comments up-thread)

ECB announces €750 billion Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme “
..and on top of that expect MORE negative intrest rates (not for you) for banks and large corporations. Yep, bail outs and missalloctions of funds and tax money here we go.

How will all this affect house prices?

I havnt a clue about this side of things. But I was hopefully planning on selling and moving in the 6-12 months

The problem is if the hotel go bankrupt (than you loose your money for sure).

I'm a landscaper and we've just be asked to stop coming to the retirement properties we work at, which is a big chunk of our working week. My boss is saying he still has other work that we can get on with but I'm thinking hang on, our work is hardly a 'key role' - surely i can refuse to work and qualify for the government 'Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme' or do I have to wait for my boss to make that call?!

In truth risk is extremely low outdoors unless you are sharing a van / truck to get there. Stopped our garden / landscape guy last week - I can do his job now we're about to be locked down, income took a hammering as I work for myself and getting ready for lockdown (i.e. buying 3+ months' worth of DIY materials, fencing, tools, paint etc etc up-front for all the jobs I'll hopefully now have time to do) has cost me a small fortune. Felt shit for him but we're all getting shafted by this thing and sadly he can't be trusted to do jobs without being supervised regularly.
