Just watched interview on BBC with Italian professor who's been involved in research with the town Vo. (One they isolated in feb)
They've tested everyone, and of those testing positive, about 40% where asymptomatic.

More interestingly, the antibody testing shows those with no or mild symptoms had little to no antibodies. Which means they could catch it again. While that might not be an issue if you only get it mildly, the problem is asymptomatic people can spread it completely unaware to others who get it more severely.

In far future it might end up like the common cold. Don't get it bad but don't develop antibodies to stop you getting it again.

I know it goes either one way or the other but having to stay in the house on weekends (never drink through week anyways) makes it 10x easier for me to stay off the drink. Drinking in the house has 0 appeal to me especially after last time ?
Yeah same I like 1or 2 in the garden after work if it's sunny as I've had all week.. But sitting watching telly with a can in hand.. No... I do bring a cold one in the Fanny pack at weekends when walking the dog.. especially after some bugel the night before..

Had to stop a bit with work ?

The question in my mind is will the government (i.e. President Trump - I live in the United States) force us to go out into the world before it's time. They will try. They want to save money & there's already talks of a new stimulus stalled in our legislature on the notion that the debt is already unmanageable. What no one wants to face is we Americans will have to pony up some tax dollars to try and help fix this once it's over.

What I think ought to happen is they should shift the structure of taxes so that 1) a stimulus/unemployment plan is feasible/affordable & 2) so that we Americans who don't realize that this money isn't free begin to warm up to the idea of opening a struggling economy, or at least weighing the idea of opening with that of paying in taxes for a realistic stimulus for the foreseeable future.

My state Supreme Court has ruled the governor’s stay at home ruling is invalid. The Tavern League (union of bar / restaurant owners) says they have bar owners trying to open tonight.

The court ruled the governor (Democrat) needs approval from the state legislature (Republicans), so basically almost nothing of value will get done. Local officials can make their own rules, which also will likely be more Republican or Democrat dick measuring than sound public health.

Life is about to get interesting.

Wisconsin? Get ready for a lot of sick and dead cheeseheads.

Not surprisingly counties that vote trump are exploding in infections. https://www.salon.com/2020/05/12/le...e-than-1000-in-rural-areas-that-backed-trump/

This Supreme Court also refused to modify our primary election so people had to stand in line to vote during the pandemic.

In both the election case and this stay at home order case, the justices worked via video conference. Hard to respect that kind of hypocrisy.

Most of the increases are due to increased testing, not increased infection rates. I haven’t seen an increase of hospitalizations anywhere yet, which is a better indicator. Not saying that won’t happen, but I don’t think it’s happened yet.

? NY

I have hope, but I highly doubt there will be proper clubbing. Can see smaller outdoor parties...which would be fine with me.

I don’t but that’s just my life, not COVID related.

This shit has me rethinking how I traditionally use vacation time. maybe I can take advantage of the new work from home flexibility to do a working sabbatical.

If I picked a lower cost of living country, I could rent my house out and get a 2BR apt on a beach somewhere. I could do it cash neutral on housing and itd only cost me what I want to spend on adventure. I could work remote and use vacation time over a few months.

Instead of just getting away on vacation, I want to get in to some place / culture / lifestyle. COVID has me getting philosophical...

Seattle, I'm definitely looking to see if it's possible. Really depends on what's available/open.

There's an entire lifestyle around this idea. FIRE - financially independent, retire early. Essentially make enough money to retire somewhere cheap and work minimally to cover basics. Search around, there's lots of info out there.

A population cull is long overdue, starting with that turbo Lawler
Who could we pay to tell us to 'put a donk on it' then?

for some reason, this reminds me of...

meanwhile, keep having to remind myself of how surreal this all is. we've been trying to arrange to meet my mum in a park for our first meet-up in months. feels like spies meeting during the cold war. i think it could be a while before we get to sit outside a bar though. pavement tables are so rare nowadays and the queues will be massive. healthwise, hayfever is the real badboy for me right now but not letting our guard down. there are still ambulances parked outside all the time.

The uk government has approved an antibody test

Which will be good to identify how many have possibly had the virus.

However that other research showing asymptomatic or people with mild symptoms don't develop antibodies will probably skew that.

That also means for those people a vaccine won't work as they won't develop antibodies and so herd immunity might not be achievable (approx 40% of people are asymptomatic apparently).

So we are going to have to a) vaccinate the rest with good coverage b) hope it doesn't mutate while circulating in the asymptomatic reservoir.
