it dosn`t take economic experts to predict that we are heading (or already are) into one of the biggest recession the world has even seen, millions of people will loose or already lost their jobs. for many, booking holidays at the moment is the last thing that they are thinking of now, it will take years to recover from this financial disaster, i hope that travel/hotel/restaurant/food/club prices will drop bc the lack of demand, imo some was anyway too expensive for most, many holiday destinations including ibiza have to adapt, otherwise there will be realy only the jet set clients left while the younger clubbers will stay away as they can not afford ibiza anymore.

Jet set's sense of live is to be seen. Without normal tourists to whom they can present themselves, they will be the first who will leave looking for new places to show off.

Like Stivi said, I expect a drop in prices for hotels, restaurants and bars. For restaurants and bars it is more important to make a high tunrover on drinks especially beer, wine, champagne otherwise the will loose their quotas from their suppliers and won't get them back easily.

Finally some good news, and I like this bit;
Arranz is also in favour of lifting the Coronavirus regulations in the Balearics before other areas, to use the islands as a ‘live laboratory’ in assessing the effects of lifting the quarantine on an isolated community, before doing so in Spain as a whole.
Still a long way to go, but hopeful we might get a reduced Sept/Oct season after all?

Lots of really dark/political comments appearing online about Boris. I really hope that does not raise it's ugly head on here. I don't think we need an argument about politics on top of everything else right now. He's a human being with a kid on the way, doing his best for the country....can we just try and keep things about Ibiza?

latest numbers for spain and balearics / ibiza & formentera numbers to follow later.

as expected, there was a bit of a rise again compared to the weekend and monday numbers because the weekend usually is 'underreported' a little, but it's by far not as bad as last week on tuesday.

5478 newly infected people in the entire country and 743 deaths in the past 24hrs (as in from sunday night 9pm to monday night 9pm).
good news is over 43k people have recovered from covid-19 by now in spain.

for balearics there was a rise again too, 49 new cases and 3 more deaths, new total of 1369 cases. 537 people have been cured.

after the bad numbers last tuesday I was fearing worse numbers tbh, now it'll be important that numbers keep going down in the next few days!

Why?

Zoonotic disease (animal to human transmission) is happens regularly. Two other well known coronaviruses SARS and MERS are also zoonotic (bats -> civet cat, camel).

Because scientists have not been able to trace the source to an intermediate host and I have seen a few saying they think it unlikely that they will. However, they managed to pin it down for SARS and MERS. This makes me very suspicious - virology is playing with fire at the best of times and the clear evidenced inability of labs to sustain a zero error environment 365 days a year is just as much of a risk factor as any natural factor.

In the UK, possibly expecting a rise after the weekend due to admin offices being opened - a DROP in both the numbers of fatalities AND new cases. If this continues for a week or so we might be seeing the light.

Also noted that jet2 still hope to fly after June 20th (thanks, Stivi) I hope Ryanair do the same and my "chance of making the end of June holiday-ometer" has jumped from around 3% to 6%.

True that he has met more people than most and had a laid back approach to shaking hands and contact early on in this crisis (a few interviews from a few weeks ago havent aged well!) and is also of course based in the country's most populated area.

But if he cant beat this with top priority medical treatment then I honestly worry for the rest of us who will have their local hospital doing their best but in difficult circumstances.
He will be getting the same level of care everyone else is entitled to I like to think so anyway.

We in the nhs treat everyone equally despite social background, race or religion.

Yes I think everyone will just go on hols even if csnt really afford it just because they will need it after this crap
Logistically, if we are still social-distancing when some degree of normality returns, think of the airport, security queues would stretch down the escalators into the hallway, queues for baggage drop would end up outside, and incoming non-schengen flights there would be queues outside for immigration.
Add that the airport itself is a small area with a mass of people and (It think) recycled air - there would be many problems to overcome. However the chances are the number of flights and tourists would be vastly reduced for the remainder of the year so that would help.

I hope so too..

But I don't think there will be holiday flights in June... Countries will may be still getting over the virus last thing they want is people traveling and spreading it around again

For years scientist been warning of pandemics, just governments put more focus on terrorism etc.

In sept last year WHO releases this report

Title:
World at Risk from Deadly Pandemics Expert group outlines steps to prepare for – and mitigate – the effects of a widespread global health emergency that could kill millions, damage global economy

Kid you not!?

Agreed. Airlines are pretty much going to be fully shut down through May and you cannot just start up again. Lots of questions around pilots re-training, crew for some airlines were laid off for 3 months in March etc. Also airlines are parking planes all over the world, getting them back + maintained will be very difficult

I agree that holidays would be the last item on the agenda. That being said, airlines need money - it costs them to have planes grounded, and so do holiday resorts. Late June may well be way over-optimistic, but I still think early autumn is doable especially if they can get the logistics sorted out. Chances of me being on Formentera for a pre-booked week in late September? Right now I'd say 40 - 50%, reading the papers I think there will be a genuine effort to save at least a third of the season.

yeah I also still think this *could* be realistic

yes September is when we would go too. probably a ferry again this year if they're running - won't be flying anywhere this year. that is a cert

I think some of them are doing flights to help NHS, ryan air and virgin are doing this, not sure if they will make money or how that works

It depends on how the virus does see if the season will go ahead

Ibiza does not have many corona cases now and they could risk it and get more if they open up travel bans too early

As I alluded to, it reads like they will use the Balearics as a "test" in the coming weeks/months, maybe "open" one part (which could be Ibiza) and see what happens, and if it's good then open Menorca...and then Mallorca. If they did that and saw the figures rise back in Ibiza then we go back to the current restrictions.
Moral - before anywhere is even partially re-opened they will have to be sure of the consequences otherwise they will be accused of using the local population as guinea-pigs if death rates increase again.
