quick update

  • vaccination on the balearics is slowly but steadily progressing. just over 10% of the population have had their first jab now. the numbers of daily applied shots is growing (6500 in the last 24hrs) and next week it should go to 7000 a day, given the archipelago will receive nearly 50k vaccine dosis. and while it isn't exactly 'warp speed' as elsewhere, the entire machinery now seems to finally get going properly.
  • covid figures are still stable - no crazy spike here on the balearics. also nice to see: 6 days in a row now without any covid deaths on the entire archipelago. the test positivity rate is also staying low (1.3%) which is an important indicator.
  • on yesterday's 'bad mask news', as mentioned, there are already conversations going on within the central government and the regional governments and I believe we should soon get an update on that. apparently the actual text of the rule that went into law yesterday had actually been redacted a year ago, in the midst of the first wave, when people were trying to imagine and predict rules for the 'new normality'. now, a year into the pandemic, the thing got public, but to the vast majority of people it's obvious that this rule needs an edit which at least gives an exemption of mask wearing for the beaches. more on this as we have it. as I said yesterday, I can't see this rule being in place in summer.

it's a day with a lot of news.

this is how the clubs on the island want to tackle reopening

nothing decided yet, it's the government's turn now to pronounce themselves on these suggestions.

easter update from the beach (without wearing masks eh)

- the balearics keep being in a stable epidemiologic situation. 14d incidence for the archipelago is at 57, ibiza is at 30. currently we keep being at around 100 active cases here on the island.
- restaurant can pilot has reopened
- ethereal at nagai is reopening today (with sasha amongst others) and tomorrow
- restaurant jul's reopens 1st may

I've been away for a few days and even took some time off the forum. here's another update as to how things look here on the balearics:

  • 14d incidence per 100k inhabitants of the archipelago is at 62, ibiza at 34,. 7day is at 30 for the balearics and 19 for ibiza. so that's a little higher than a week ago, but it's still a really good level given we've just had the easter holidays. hospital situation is good too and mortality is way down now thanks to the vaccines.
  • on the vaccination front yesterday we had 10k dosis administered on the balearics in one single day which is a new record. 12% of the population has had one shot now and nearly 5% have had both. little by little we're getting there...

more news next week.

almost a week since the last update so here we go...

epidemiological situation
  • as of today, the 14d incidence per 100k inhabitants is at 63, ibiza at 41. 7d incidence is at 32 for the balearics and 22 for ibiza. if you compare those numbers to the previous post you'll see it's a little higher, but the good news is, the big explosion after the easter holidays (exactly two weeks ago now) hasn't happened.
  • with these numbers, the balearic islands are currently still one of the most favourable looking areas within spain (and continental europe in general!)
  • at the same time, the vaccination process is continuing despite the AZ and J&J 'stop&go BS' (or whatever you wanna call it). on a spanish national level, we are now at 300-450k administered doses per day. 20% of pop have had a first dosis and 7% have had both. the balearics, which started slow, are now catching up and are at 16% and 5.4% currently. little by little, step by step. but the death rate on the balearics due to covid is almost at 0 now (in the last 3 weeks two people died of covid) due to having the old & vulnerable vaccinated (plus all the other restrictions in place still of course).

2021 season outlook

  • even if the island is still very quiet, compared to january - march, you can definitely tell there's more movement. more people around, more planes arriving and leaving (I don't live too far from the aiport so I can tell) and more people in the shops and on the terraces for lunch. even if we have some mixed april weather right now, no matter who you talk to, everyone says this is much better than the current paris/london/milano/berlin.
  • for the next few weeks I believe the current mantra 'keep incidence low and continue to vaccinate, vaccinate and vaccinate' will continue. at the same time, at some point the local gov't will have to make a move and open up a little for tourism to allow a little more (as in restaurants open in the evening and such). we're certainly awaiting news in the second part of april for what's gonna be possible in may.
  • on the clubbing front, heart has announced both guy laliberté (cirque du soleil owner and artistic part) as well as the adriá brothers (gastronomic part) have withdrawn from being involved in heart. this rumour had been doing the rounds here all winter and is not a huge surprise really. that said, it might not mean the end for heart. no idea what's in store for them this summer (as no one knows anything still right now), but I have a feeling the venue might continue to exist in the future

more news again next weeks folks. hang in there in the meantime and enjoy your outdoor beers wherever you can!

here's an update without covid numbers for once (because they're pretty much the same as the two previous updates), but with some info as to what's likely to happen in the next few weeks.

  • on a spanish national level, the state of alarm runs until 9th may. the central government has repeatedly said they don't want to extend it beyond that date. this comes with a number of consequences for the autonomous regions, one of the most mentioned ones is the fact that the autonomías won't be legally able to maintain the nightly curfew anymore once there is no state of alarm. various autonomías have requested the state of alarm to be extended further and one of the main reasons is exactly this one. so currently the lawyers of the autonomous regions are looking for ways to be able to maintain a nightly curfew still after 9th may and the next few weeks might be interesting. what's clear is that from a legal point of view, a few different restrictions can't be sustained anymore without the national state of alarm.
  • on a balearic autonomous level, we expect friday to be the day when we get confirmation for some eased regulations. as of now, hospitality is only open daytime (until 5pm) and outdoors only. but as we get closer to tourist season and with a low incidence and the vaccination campaign now properly underway it's clear that the local government needs to make a move. and while not properly confirmed yet, this article says we might see terraces open until 10:30pm from saturday onwards while the inside of bars/restaurants is still off limits https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...que-queda-baleares-retrasara-23-48512256.html so if this gets confirmed, then from saturday onwards and until 9th may it would mean nightly curfew still active, but only from 11pm onwards, and restaurants/bar terraces (which currently shut at 5pm) may open for a dinner round from 8:30 to 10:30pm.
as usual, more info as we get it.

here's another update!

epidemiological situation:

  • as of today, ibiza's 14d incidence per 100k inhabitants is at 45, the 7d one is at 20. absolutely stable situaion. test positivity rate is at 2% right now.
  • vaccination on balearics also progressing further, we're now at 18% first dose and 6% for both jabs. plus, janssen/j&j jabs are accepted again and pfizer lots get bigger next week so it should speed up another bit.
as mentioned a few days ago, because of the stable situation, a few rules will be changed, from this saturday 24th april onwards...

  • nightly curfew now 23-06 (instead of 22-6)
  • shops open until 9pm
  • indoor spaces of bars & restaurants still shut, but terraces may now be filled to capacity
  • extended hours for bars & restaurants: midweek they can now serve dinner (outside of course). so it's lunch until 5pm, then closed until 8pm and then open again for dinner until 10:30pm.
  • reunions still limited to 6 people and if it's outdoor it now doesn't matter anymore from how many households these 6 people stem from
  • gyms can open (30% cap) and outdoor sports are OK up to 10people (non-contact sports)
these rules will likely stay in place until 9th may and then we might see another modification, if numbers stay good likely with less restrictions.

weekend update

no numbers, but you should all have a read of this interview (google translate will help in case you don't understand spanish), it'll give you an idea of what *MIGHT* be possible clubbing wise this year here on ibiza

here we go with another update

epidemiological situation
  • the entire country seems to stabilize at whichever incidence they have been in the last week or so. for example madrid keeps being high (but isn't going up anymore) and the balearics, which have been at around 50 per 100k 14d incidence for weeks now, keep being low (see details below). overall within spain the positivity rate is slowly going down which is a good sign
  • as of today, the balearics are at a 14d incidence of 56 per 100k inhabitants currently, 7d at 30
  • ibiza is at a 14d incidence of 38 per 100k inhabitants currently, 7d at 18. formentera hasn't had any new cases in the last 10 days.
  • vaccination campaign is well underway now country wide. plus 80s have all had their first jab, two thirds of all plus 70s too and 45% of the plus 60s too. little by little we're getting there. the mortality rate has also been very stable now for the past few weeks and should soon drop further. for the balearics 20% have now had their first jab and 6.5% have had both.
ibiza season news
  • TUI will start offering holidays again now from 1st may onwards https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...za-formentera-ofrece-vacaciones-49617089.html - messages like this are an important first step
  • the central government still plans to NOT extend the state of alarm further after 9th may. the balearic government has decided they wanna keep up the controls at the ports and airports for now - let's see what happens on the test front, we'll soon know whether you still need a PCR test or if antigen also works from 10th may onwards. the green passport won't be ready until mid-june within the EU from what I've read so there will be a month or so where tourists will arrive, but the green passport system won't be ready just yet.
  • as you may have read in the piece I posted yesterday, the nightlife association will have another meeting with the balearic government at the start of may, so sometime in may we should know a little more which of the proposed options by the nightlife industry seem viable for the government.

and we're back!

update...

epidemiological situation

  • STABLE. 14d incidence per 100k inhabitants is at 41 for ibiza, 7d is at 22. we've been on this level (with small ups and downs) for over a month now. hospital and ICU occupation on low level.
  • vaccination has ramped up massively. for the entire country of spain, between december and march, 8 million dosis had been administered. now in april alone the same 8 million have been done in just a month.
  • 20.6% of balearic pop have had their first (or single) shot, 7.5% have had both

ibiza season news

  • we are entering the last week of the nationwide state of alarm. still lots of uncertainties in regards to nightly curfew etc from 10th may onwards, expect more info on this to come next week
  • hostal la torre reopens today
  • pikes reopens 20th may and starts pikes on sunday on a weekly basis on 23rd may
  • chiringuito blue reopens 12th may
  • hard rock hotel reopens 20th may
  • jockey club reopens 7th may
  • sa trinxa reopens 14th may

midweek update

epidemiological situation
  • I'm repeating myself here, but it keeps looking very good. ibiza's 14d incidence per 100k pop is at 38, the 7d one is at 20. formentera hasn't had any newly detected cases for over two weeks and is thus at a zero incidence rate right now. so the pitiuses are in a very favourable situation currently.
  • for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic, the can misses hospital is currently covid-free. we still have a few people recovering from the illness, but no covid positive patients.
  • vaccination well underway, 21.3% of pop have had their first (or single) shot, 8.6% have had both. this week alone 8000 doses should be administered which is quite a big number for such a small island.

ibiza season news
  • as mentioned previously, the nationwide state of alarm ends this coming sunday 9th may. the new rules valid from 10th may onwards are still not out and are expected to be presented anytime between today and friday. the central government has already said it'll be up to the supreme court to decide whether the local governments may keep up some of the restrictions such as nightly curfews and limits on reunions. once the local government announces their plans we'll obviously let you know immediately. there will definitely be news coming out this week still!
  • the UK government has yesterday taken the canary islands off the no-travel list (which means no quarantine is needed), but has for now left the balearics on that list sadly. we are still positive our islands will get green status soon too.
lastly, summer has arrived here. first proper warm days this week, more bars, restaurants and beach clubs opening and more people around everywhere.

ok quick update, this just in from the balearic government

  • for the next two weeks after the end of the state of alarm (10th may to 23rd may), the local government would like to keep up the current restrictions still, which they actually don't have a legal base for without the nationwide state of alarm: nightly curfew, small reunions only, health checks at the airport. the government has just put this in motion so that the supreme court can judge on whether or not that's lawful in sight of the pandemic situation. by friday we should know the supreme court's thoughts on this.
  • other rules such as limiting the inside bits of bars/restaurants etc actually CAN be decided by the local government as far as we're aware because they're not fundamental human rights.
here's an article (in spanish) on the matter https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...aprueba-urgencia-mantener-toque-51347768.html (the government actually first wanted to check with the supreme court to see whether they can put this in motion, but the SC has said they won't judge without it being put in motion so this is why it's been put in motion in urgency just now).

here's another update (I think we might get quite a few updates coming in over the next days)

epidemiological situation

  • per yesterday, 14d incidence of ibiza at 37, 7d at 17. formentera now almost 3 entire weeks without any newly detected cases. very stable situation on the balearics in general and the pitiuses currently actually have the lowest numbers within the archipelago
  • also per yesterday, vaccine % is at 21.6% first / single shot and 8.9% second shot. and I've just seen that in the last 24hrs nearly 15k doses have been administered on the entire archipelago which is a new record. the balearic government's official numbers now actually state 26.2% have had first (or single) shot and 10.7% have had both.
resuming the above, the balearics currently really have the numbers under control - I've checked and we've been in a similar situation now for two months almost. and the vaccination campaign is going well - it's not super quick, but it's moving along nicely.

ibiza season news

  • in a virtual meeting between the balearic government and the nightlife association this morning, the nightlife industry has made the proposal to do a pilot test in the second half of june so that the clubs will be able to open from july onwards. the nightlife industry has made lots of proposals as in what formats the clubs could open and they've requested to get a roadmap with dates etc from the balearic government. pretty well explained article here https://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitius...o-ibiza-propone-celebrar-prueba-51402924.html

the supreme court has apparently accepted this. so for the coming two weeks we'll still have the nightly curfew etc. I'll put up a link once we have the full info.

this deserves its own post.
ushuaïa beach hotel reopens 28th may

currently no club events scheduled, but that might change depending on how the next weeks/months go.
