Berlin - thoughts?

Yeah so I was told back in 2017, turned away but then got let into Berghain, work that one out 😅

Sometimes Watergate could be a bit picky with single men depending on the night. Thing is, you got into the better club (imho) - if you offer me Watergate or Panorama Bar I would pick those fluttering shutters any day

Absolutely I’d choose Berghain every time but because I hadn’t been to watergate I thought I’d give it a go, Solomun was on. I wasn’t alone that night, a few of us from the backpackers hostel had gone out together (Another reason to go, to enjoy it with others). I remember the queue was carnage and the people I were with had got in but when I got to the front they said no, no f***s given I’d lost my friends for the night 😂 Berghain was great, it’s pretty much a given, I was sat downstairs at the bar initially but it wasn’t long before that main room techno (Scuba) got me up. Always feels like a bit of an achievement getting into Berghain.

Been a while since I posted here. Life sometimes has the nasty habit of getting in the way of club culture 🙈

Anyway, went to the final Watergate party yesterday. What a wonderful night ❤️.

Came in at around 17:00 on the 1st.
We immediately had a great start with extrawelt live. Positive melancholy would be a good way to describe the set.
Following that with Caran Callas, who performed best in the second half hour of her set. Impossible to not start to dance, but then she got a little too easy on the hits, which made the set feel a little cheap.
After that Kollektiv Turmstrasse which played a version of this set list. To me the most unexpected and odd part starts around 34:00, and although commercial in that moment on the floor it came across as creative and authentic.
Following that we hung around a bit for Catz and Dogs but he wasn’t really able to get my full attention, it was a bit too hard for me for that moment in the night.
Up until that point we hadn’t been at the waterfloor (we missed Butch playing there because he was programmed parallel of Extrawelt). Going down from the main floor we got very lucky and stayed for the full set of Nat Wendel (mood). The entire night there was a lot of dancing but the people were dancing the most with each other during his set. At one point it seemed like he had pretty much attracted all the women from the club to his floor 😆 It kind of reminded me of this German clubbing comic (“as soon as you get the ladies dancing… the whole club dances”).

After so much dancing we needed a cool down. We met a really nice couple which we ended up spending the remainder of the night with. Then we had some really tough choices. We saw the first hour hour of Marco Resmann and the last hour of Anja Schneider. Both were performing wonderful. We stayed until they closed the main floor. Marco played back to back with Catz and Dogs (a little too floating) and Butch (very nice). I was really happy for him that he had the chance as resident to close that floor 🙇🙇‍♂

All in all it was a great night. Would have loved to stay for Henrik Schwarz, Galuzi, and Uli himself playing, but regular life needed us too, so we did the smart thing and went home at 04:30.

My wife lived in Berlin for 13 years before I met her, and she was embedded deeply in the scene because she was the partner of a DJ. Watergate was a club that played an important role in her “clubbing career”, and in the lives and careers of friends. Although she moved out to Amsterdam over a decade ago it was sad news to hear about the closure. For some people working at the club it was an emotional night. However, hearing the the outrageous amount of rent it’s not difficult to understand why closing was the only reasonable option. There are many reasons to attribute beyond the rent, but on the other hand it doesn’t really matter, because it’s water under the bridge (the oberbaumbrucke in this case).
In Amsterdam I’ve seen iconic clubs come and go, and although sad, it also produces some mystery. People tend to forget that renowned historic clubs had bad nights too. With that in mind I liked the “every end is a new beginning” theme. It gave the party a positive spin. And a closure opens up room for new places and experiences. If anything, the party felt like a high school reunion (the good kind) where you saw people you didn’t see in ages, and commemorated wonderful experiences of the past.

The party is over, long live the party 🫶🏼

This is a next-level review of Berghain. Without any photography, your imagination really does run wild!

Thank you for sharing it here! I saw referrers coming from this URL and came to say hi and thanks. I'm at about 17,000 words so far, and have another 10,000+ coming just on Berghain.

The stand out part was your kindness when finally getting a vacant toilet. Not everyone has the generosity to invite total strangers into the toilet with you to take their ...medications... whilst you are dropping the most disgusting dump ever.
I'm nothing if not generous. Also, I think I would have enjoyed watching the gentleman do his medications.
