Balearic, Chill Out & Sunset Music

Went to see the Spanish guitarist Melón Jiménez and flute player Lara Wong last night in a live space at the back of a bookshop in town. Absolutely fantastic. Both incredible musicians, taking in everything from jazz and flamenco to Indian, Moroccan and electronic music. Well worth seeing if they're in your neighbourhood. Much of it was taken from the new album which just came out

Latest balearic sunrise...

Another guest mix from a friend - got builders in at home at the moment so my "studio" has had to be dismantled.

It's a great mix in my opinion. This guy isn't a dj "per se" but has been the playlist king at many an afters over the years so I knew he had a good mix in him.

Intro - excerpt from Roisin Murphy interview
Cocteau Twins - Cherry Coloured Funk (Seefeel remix)
ETBTG - Night and Day
The Durutti Column - Jacqueline
Khruangbin - Two Fish and an Elephant
Alela Diane - Lady Divine
Phosphorescent - Song for Zula
Thievery Corporation - Sweet Tides
a.s.o - Falling Under
Begin - Wood Trees
Tempelhof, Gigi masin, Jex Opolis - Corner Song (jex Opolis Remix)
Mylo - Emotion 98.6
Lord of the Isles - For a Burning World
Project Pablo - last Day

Someone has managed to id the Julio Iglesias track Harvey played on Sept 23. I knew it wasn't the og. Had a Residentes Balearicos lick of paint.

Great find and brought back some good memories - sounded immense on that system. Juno has it down as being a DJ Harvey release, not just something he's played.

Ambient-inspired Christmas mix.

2 Ken Elkinson - We Wish You a Merry Christmas
3 Harold Budd - The White Arcades
4 Tony Anderson - Dwell (Snowfall Remix)
5 Brian Eno - Stars
6 Fever Audio - Lil' Drummer Boy (Big Drummer Man Remix)
7 Steve Roach - Structures from Silence
8 Akis - Christmas
9 We Dream of Eden & MountainCity - Peace for Your Christmastime

Used my Voices hour this month to pay tribute to Alfredo. I was only a wee nipper during the Amnesia years but saw him much later a few times on the premier etage in Space. Had a “smile and nod” exchange with him at the bar there once…he seemed a very warm character. The selections here are perhaps a little obvious but those years at Amnesia were clearly life changing! Tried to present those tunes as best I could. Thanks x

Excerpt from IMS keynote interview 2014
Timmy Thomas - Why Can’t We Live Together
Antena - Camino Del Sol

Marvin Gaye - A Funky Space Reincarnation

Gilberto Gil - Todo Menina Baiana
The Woodentops - Why (Bonus)
Liaisons Dangereuses - Los ninos del parque
Orange Lemon - The Texican
Richie Havens - Going Back To My Roots
The Nightwriters - Let The Music Use You Up (Frankie Knuckles mix)

^so many personal faves there. The number of times I've been at some incredibly one dimensional party and just wanted to scream "play Jibaro you c***"

Obv been reading all the Alfredo eulogies. I got the impression he was sometimes a bit embarrassed by all the attention, and got a bit tired of being typecast which is why he did play a lot of unexpectedly banging music in the later years.

*HNY to everyone on this thread

Yeah...that keynote interview with Ben Turner from 2014 worth a listen. There was deffo a lot more to him than these 15 odd tunes...remember him playing chemical brothers on premier etage on one of the occasions I saw him. Just a shame that he didn't get more from the scene that he was key to the creation of....we've discussed this before but another founding member who didn't get anywhere near the kudos/riches he deserved.

What a time though....one of those if you had a time machine you'd want to do Amnesia in 88 or 89 as much as Paradise Garage in its pomp!

Me too, and the contrast with now makes me want to weep. I'd rather lacerate my limbs than attend anything advertised in the 'gossip' thread

The challenge for people like me, fast approaching 50 in the next few weeks, is what to do these days musicwise.. I don't want to get my balearic fix at swanky listening bars serving 12€ beers... or at super controlled venues where you can't hear anything

What's been lost is the spontaneity of laidback bar/clubs run by good people with good music which open/close when they feel like it and which are refuges from the outside world

Yeah...I'm quite lucky here there are loads of heads well into their 50's/60's and loads of little pubs that offer something but I find it harder and harder to go "proper" clubbing these days....although day parties at some of the bigger venues down here are starting to become a bit of a thing.

Have you ever thought about putting on something yourself?

ugh don't get me started... hard to start anything here. the number of hoops you have to go through with bars, neighbours, council, cops. not worth the faff.

Phil Cooper's got a new YouTube channel focused on Ibiza. Starts Jan 19th

Having been living in Ibiza for 6 years and visiting and working here since '91, I have decided to take the bull by the horns and start making some informative (I hope) content about ‘The Other Side of the Island’. The first episode goes out on Sunday 19th Jan on my NuNorthern Soul YouTube I have several other episodes recorded and being edited and hopefully my little insights will prove useful for people looking for an alternative angle.
