Babyshambles

I never said send him to jail JUST BECAUSE he was a junkie i said because he has been up in court so many times it's wrong that he can get away with it and others don't
Without agreeing on everything that Jonny has brought up, I will point out that this one is interesting.

Whatever you feel about people being put in jail for repeated drug possession, do you not find it odd that Doherty seems to keep getting released every time he's in court? I even read one story (not in a tabloid) where a judge praised his progress. (What?!!)

What would happen if common folk were in the same legal position?

It's actually quite common practice for people undergoing a court treatment for addition to be praised if they're making progress. We're a liberal bunch we are

Ya, but I think that hearing was while he was still waiting for another hearing on a new charge!

I'm talking about a while ago, though... back when he was getting arrested every few weeks.

Still, no one's addressed the question: Should a well-known repeat offender like Pete get off when/if a less famous person (right or wrong) would be locked up?

If that is the case, he is getting off just because he is famous, then NO

Personally I don't think that Doherty is getting off cos he is famous. I think that for once our courts are doing the right thing. It would be easy for them to have a kneejerk reaction and lock him up and make an example of him, but considering his main problem is drug addition, prison is only going to worsen his situation and increase the likelihood of him getting more hooked on drugs and increase the likelihood that he'll reoffend when he's released.

His actual 'crimes' (the drugs possession - it's only ever been minor quanitites he's been found with, never for dealing and the car stuff which was things like driving without insurance etc) wouldn't carry an automatic custodial sentence for anyone, regardless of whether they're famous or not.

I read this morning that apparently Gordon Ramsey's brother had been caught with a gram of heroin in Bali (for personal use only) and was looking at ten years in prison there. Tis a long time.

I'm not arguing with the logic that jail for drug offenders can be counterproductive. On that, I think we agree.

But I do wonder if one of us were caught with a gram or two each of cocaine, crack, marijuana and heroin, would we get off so easy? Especially if we'd just been sentenced for another drug bust. I'm not so sure...

The reason they catch him with drugs so much is because he is famous and the police know his face.
I'm sure if he wasn't famous (a famous user at that) he would not have been 'caught' so many times.
The press should lay off the poor lad and stop portraying him in only one way.

As long as you could prove it was for possession and not intent to supply then I think you'd get off. If the police were that bothered about arresting and charging people for possession of small quantities then they'd set up camp outside of an infinite number of places in London on any night of the week and our English jails would be full 50x over.

(Phew all these inellectual conversations are hurting my brain, ask Irina if she's got any questions about Top Shop  ;) ).
