Apart from my early visits to the island in the late 90's which carry there own special memories, all my trips in later years have generally been centered around Cocoon at Amnesia with the fondest of memories. Richie Hawtin smashing the main room, the occasional m-nus night i remember, all the different themes, invaders, wildlife etc. Always getting to see someone different like Dominic Eulberg, sonja Moonear, Gaiser......
Amnesia is still my favourite club in the whole world, has been since i first stepped foot in it (when the terrace was open air and a chillout room frequented by transvestites), and cocoon is part of that, always preferered the main room, a crisper sound and a better energy, used to love watching Sven strut about on the gantry with all the amps flashing in the background (before he made the terrace his home). Dancers always dressed a little bit different and more entertaining. I do miss the V Prof sound systems though, the new one just doesnt have that punch, and those 7/8am finishes...
I never went to Cocoon at pacha but one of my best memories is of Cocoon at Privilige, when Amnesia got closed early season that one year! It was just a novelty to have cocoon in the main room, with all the extra performers and acrobats etc creating the spectacle and Sven waving the records above his head in the booth in the middle of the pool, Marco Carola was even playing in the much smaller coco loco room. Was full cocoon crazy. A testament to how big cocoon was in its prime, to keep the party rolling and take on such a big venue, when even the mighty cream just cancelled their shows.
Ive already been to ibiza this year and wasnt planning on it again but when i saw Richie Hawtins name on the team sheet I booked next day, the lineups have got housier as has Svens style, but with Hawtin on a seperate stage I know good things will happen!! Check his set on soundcloud from Womb this year, classic Hawtin. I can also trance it up the night before in my beloved Amnesia for some extra nostalgia in my brief 48 hour visit! Hopefully Sven is playing a longer set than Richie so I can catch some pure cocoon vibes before heading for the techno
Cocoon, for me, the best thing that ever happened to Ibiza, and its demise is reflected in the demise of the island as a whole but it is lovely to see Sven keeping it real at Akasha and staying connected to his island in such a humble way (loved seeing him play outside at las dalias)!!
Long live cocoon, see you at the afters ;o)
