New Sea Wall Walkway Inaugurated.
The new walkway along the top of the sea wall in the port of Sant Antoni, which has cost 698.000€, was inaugurated last week by the PP Conservative town, island & Balearic authorities who were delighted by this new tourist facility. Not so happy were the anti-motorway protestors who turned up to the inauguration ceremony to heckle the politicians over the motorway projects now being built on the islands by the same administrations. Whilst police kept the protestors away from the politicians, their loud protest cries & chants could be clearly heard.

they have all gone crazy, they are talking about doing a tunnel in the port again.....

Sant Antoni Mayor Thinks We Need The Tunnel From The Port Now.
According to the Mayor of Sant Antoni, Jose Sala, the proposed tunnel to allow traffic to leave the busy port area of the town by another route is needed now to handle existing traffic & is not an installation which should depend upon if the marina planned for Ses Variades is ever built. The Mayor supposedly suggested that the authorities should stand the cost of this infrastructure & that the cost of building the tunnel should not be passed on to the promoters of the marina & cruise ship landing jetty, which is planned to be built outside & alongside the existing harbour wall, even though the existence of the tunnel is apparently fundamental to the feasibility of the marina plan. The Mayor also reported to the media that the promoters of the marina had been asked to change their plans for the 400 berth installation so that the marina didn't increase the narrowness of the entrance to the port & bay of the town. Something that was supposedly even more essential if the marina planned for the Punta Xinxo headland on the opposite side of the bay went ahead as well.

nice to see an article that acknowledges that not all british tourists are vomiting football top wearing yobs!

Yes, a part of them are 1 millisecond attention span stimulant abusers fond of very visibly branded apparel?

i know it's cool in these columns to knock san an because a few streets are populated by young people who don't fit the clubbing mould. however careful examination of san an's offer shows that the place really does have a lot of fantastic restaurants, great opportunities for sports and water sports, excursions, nice bars, a lot of quaint architecture and is actually a real breathing living town.

I don't think people are mocking san an because there are people who are not clubbers, it's rather they're staying the hell out of there because it's a reservation area for British people.

Like me, I don't have anything against the British, many of them are good friends of mine, but naturally I'm staying the hell of out san an like everyone else (who's not British). I mean, why would anyone voluntarily want to torture themselves? Notice how all the people talking enthusiastically about San an in this thread are British? Well, even some of the more clued-up Brits understand quite clearly and stay the hell out.

This talk about "regeneration of San an" - dream on. Yeah, maybe more Brits come to the place with the marketing push, but it doesn't have any sort of effect on everyone else, who's staying the hell out of the place - if I didn't make that clear already.

One never needs to visit san an to have a clear conviction of never going anywhere near the place. Just one visit to space on sunday is enough for pretty much everyone.

I hope I made myself clear enough: NO, WE'RE NOT GOING TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR SAN AN. And now please go on with your discussion Brits. I still don't have anything against you :)

If that isnt a small minded point of view then I dont know what is.

I've joined in on San An bashing in the past but I've grown to love the place.

@ petrus, i agree wholeheartedly with nil satis. how can someone who (probably) loves ibiza and to the extent that they visit a website/forum about it, have such a narrow and small minded point of view.

i've never visited helsinki, but you can be sure i won't be as ignorant as you suggest, in making a decision whether i like it or not before i visit.:p

you also entirely miss the point about the regeneration in terms of the reasons why and who benefits most. For your information, its neither brits nor people of other nationalites, it is in fact the thousands of residents of San An who have lived there most their lives (I also think some of them might defend their town "enthusiastically")

The new promenade from San Antonio town centre to Cala Gracioneta will finally be constructed. Frozen since the year 2000, the project will at last get underway in October and cost €4.5 million.
There will be two distinct parts to the ‘paseo,’ the first stretch, running past the famous sunset strips to Cala des Moro will be paved to a width of six metres. The last part up to the lovely little cove of Cala Gracioneta will have a much more ‘rustic’ look and will probably be a wooden boardwalk as it traverses some quite rocky coastline.
from the ibiza sun:

Sunset Strip Promenade Building To Start Soon.
Costing 4.5 million€, the planned promenade between the port in Sant Antoni & the Cala Gracio area of the town was approved last week & the date to start the work set for this autumn with the contracts now being put out to tender. The only change is that, for budgeting & technical reasons, the project will be divided into 2 phases with the first phase from the port to Cala des Moro being carried out this coming winter as the authorities feel that this section is in most need of a fundamental change, improvement & re-organisation, which building the promenade will supposedly achieve. This first section will have an imitation stone floor covering with wooden urban furniture, fixtures & fittings using 75% of the budget. The first phase will be completed by summer 2007 & the next, more rustic phase from Cala des Moro to Cala Gracio will start in autumn 2007.

Sant Antoni Rescinds Contract To Reform Central Streets.
The town hall in Sant Antoni has decided to rescind the contract with the 2 construction companies who have being refurbishing the central streets & making them more attractive & pedestrian friendly over the winter. The Mayor of Sant Antoni suggested that there was no problem in cancelling the contracts because of the failure of the construction companies to meet work completion deadlines. The town hall has also decided to fine the companies 186.000€ for their failure to honour the contract. They are now waiting to see if the companies involved accept this decision or will try to fight the town hall in the courts.
Whilst the affected roads are passable by cars & pedestrians, there is still work to be done & the town hall will now employ another firm to finish the projects & put numerous faults right. Some work will be carried out this summer with the rest being left until winter when work will also start on giving a face lift to 6 more central streets.
and, after a delay of 5 months, the streets were finally inaugurated yesterday!

from the ibiza sun:

Central Streets Officially Opened.
Last week the town hall in Sant Antoni officially opened the central streets, which have been made more pedestrian friendly, & inaugurated the improved kiddies play ground at the end of the fountain promenade. The park cost 140.000€ & the changes to the Sant Antoni street up to the plaza de España cost 911.644€, the improvements to the Ramón & Cajal street cost 1.555.219€, the changes to Ramón Llull street cost 250.264€, the improvements to the Dinamarca street cost 228.408€, the changes to the Progreso street cost 633.886€ & the improvements to the Marino Riquer street cost 549.522€. There are still finishing touches to be made to the improvements once the summer is over ( !! ) & there are also contractual problems to sort out between the town hall & the contractors who carried out the work.

Romans Versus Carthaginians.

Last Saturday the annual fun re-enactment of the battles between the Romans & the Carthaginians from historic times which once again took place on the beach of Es Pouet with the Roman forces made up of residents from Sant Agusti defending their beach from the attacks of the Carthaginians from Sant Antoni (as you might know, half of that beach is in san antonio and the other half in san agustín - McR). Full of exciting moments & lots of fun as the tomatoes used as ammunition flew between the 2 sides, this not too accurate historic event created a great spectacular for all to enjoy. Gradually the fighting gave way to socialising as there were drinks & refreshments available as well as a great rock concert & electronic music performance with nobody at the end of the night really certain who won the battle!

taken from Judgement Sunday confirms for Eden in 2007:

Spotlight: The planned promenade round to by Kasbah starts in October. What are your opinions on the regeneration of San Antonio?

Jules: San An's better than ever. I've passed on my interest in Kasbah, but the promenade is just part of the wider improvements being made. The improvements made in the streets around the centre plus the fact that most hotels, well at least those three star or above, now have air conditioning, are huge steps towards making San An a great destination for modern tourism. If there ever was a real problem with San An it was the standard of some of the accomodation and that isn't the case anymore. Add to that the fact that San An has some really great restaurants and I think the place has massive advantages over other Mediterranean resorts. The island as a whole has a bohemian feel that's sometimes ignored by the media while they concentrate on one or two streets in the West End.
