last year it started at the end of the season so some people thought it would be that way this year, which is not true..... at least not in the case of san antonio. san antonio knew that the new law the balearic government is preparing to regulate the opening/closing times of this kind of business in the balearic islands would take ages to be passed so they created their own version which, according to them, will be ready by may and which, i suppose, will disappear once theres one for all the islands..... or maybe it will happen the same than with the anti-smoking law, the one in the balearics (approved first) is a bit different than the spanish one so we are still wondering which is the good one!!

No Change In Disco Hours.

Whilst it appears that the Consell island Government has co-ordinated several meetings between all the Town Councils on the island & that Sant Antoni has changed it's bye laws so that discos have to close between 06h & 12h, the situation has not changed throughout the rest of the island.
In all the other boroughs, discos will be able to open & close in the same way & at the same times as they have done in previous years.
One discos association apparently claims this is unfair on those that are located in the borough of Sant Antoni whilst most of the politicians appear to be waiting for after summer when a new Balearic law covering the tourist entertainment industry should be passed & will control such things as closing times for discos throughout the Baleares.

It appears that police representatives are still hoping that the Town halls can work together to create a period of the day when there are no entertainment establishments open so that the tourists have to stop the "party" & go to bed.
One spokesman supposedly suggested that it was clear from deaths caused by drugs consumed on the islands & emergency medical cases, which are increasing each summer, that the human body nor the local society can support carrying on as we are doing at the moment.
Whilst these declarations are "noble" they seem to go against some emerging trends which we have heard about from TV documentaries.
It appears that discos in Mallorca are collaborating with airlines to bring German youngsters to the island & spend 24 hours none stop, if not longer, "partying" before they fly straight back to their country of origin without the necessity of contracting a hotel.
It appears that the system is working so well that they are extending it to other countries & also taking Spanish youngsters the other way for a similar experience in another country.

Cala Gracio Promenade gets Finance.
It was reported last week that the proposed promenade from the end of the port in Sant Antoni, which will pass along the subset strip to Cala Gracio, will be financed & construction can soon start. With the construction costing 900.000€, the promenade will be made up of stone paved sections & lengths of wooden walk ways with integrated lighting as well as creating sightseeing areas & public seating all along the length of the promenade. It appears that more money, around 1 million€, will be invested in tidying up, improving accessibility & creating gardens along the new promenade & other coastal areas of Sant Antoni as well as supposedly re-surfacing the existing promenade in the town.
it should be ready by summer 2007:
 http://www.diariodeibiza.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pIdNoticia=101525

the terraces of some sunset bars will disappear so they will have to ask permi$$ion to the town hall to install wood platforms (similar to sugar sea) between the new promenade and the sea:
 http://www.diariodeibiza.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pIdNoticia=101526

Cala Gracio Promenade Approved.

With work planned to start in October, the promenade from the end of the port in Sant Antoni to Cala Gracio was approved this week. Divided in to 2 halves with the first section near the port being more urban in nature & made of more normal building & paving materials, the other section from Cala des Moro to Cala Gracio will be made of natural materials sticking as much as possible to the existing footpath which has naturally been worn along the coast. Supposedly the first section will re-state & re-claim for public use & transit the actual official coastal area boundaries thus affecting private properties as well as the terraces of some of the famous sunset cafes in this area. The loss of terraces will supposedly be compensated for by the coastal authorities allowing the bars to set up temporary wooden decking as terraces on the sea side of the promenade each summer & remove them each winter.
Little Opposition To Cala Gracio Promenade.

Whilst the opposition on the Town Council appear to oppose the scale & lack of detail in the planning of the promenade projected to be built from the port to Cala Gracio & say that in some parts it will supposedly reach 10 metres wide, there are apparently only 6 individuals who have made any suggestions for changes to the plan (lets see: the owner of cafe del mar, the owner of sugar sea/savannah/cafe mambo, the owner of rey de copas, the owner of coastline cafe/kanya, the owner of sunseabar and the owner of kasbah maybe? that would be 6!!). Most of these individual complaints are based around the fact that the promenade will take land off properties where they live which is classed as reserved for public transit & at present is supposedly dedicated to private uses by the residents in the area.

Sant Antoni Road Works To Take Longer.

The road works taking place all over central Sant Antoni are expected to take at least a week if not 2 longer to complete. The 15th May deadline for finishing the work to make pedestrian friendly & embellish the central area of the town has already passed with those responsible claiming that reason for the delay is because they have encountered more problems than expected when carrying out this ambitious reconstruction project.
Reportedly businesses in the area are experiencing loss of customers & are already worrying about the continuation of the same project next winter when 6 more streets are due to be renovated in a similar fashion.

btw, today diario de ibiza confirms that only san antonio has introduced changes in the closing/opening hours to avoid after-hours (they have to close at 6am and cant reopen till midday, so amnesia wont be able to reopen at 8am like they did once last september):

 http://www.diariodeibiza.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pIdNoticia=105354

so only extasis, eden, es paradis, privilege and amnesia will be affected by these changes (if someone wants to open an after-hours at summum in the bay, for example, it belongs to san jose sooooo..... .....). this also means that pacha, for example, can continue closing at 7 or 8 which, as paquita cardona from the disco association (and eden) said, its so unfair ! ! ! !

Ibiza Promenades and Discos

Perhaps one of the most important meetings of San Antonio town council for years took place here in Ibiza this week. Two major decisions with far reaching effects were taken and passed by the councillors.
The new promenade from San Antonio town centre to Cala Gracioneta will finally be constructed. Frozen since the year 2000, the project will at last get underway in October and cost €4.5 million.
There will be two distinct parts to the ‘paseo,’ the first stretch, running past the famous sunset strips to Cala des Moro will be paved to a width of six metres. The last part up to the lovely little cove of Cala Gracioneta will have a much more ‘rustic’ look and will probably be a wooden boardwalk as it traverses some quite rocky coastline.

The second measure taken at the meeting was to increase the amount of the penalty to be levied on the four big discos in San Antonio for closing late. The council is trying to enforce the licensing laws for the discos in order to prevent 24-hour-a-day clubbing with punters leaving the big discos en masse and heading for ‘after hours’ clubs. Previously the fine of €150 did little to encourage the discos from complying with the law, now at €3.000 for every extra hour open beyond the official time the clubs may just think twice.

more info about the fines on diario de ibiza's article:

Huge Losses Suffered By Businesses In Sant Antoni.

The shopkeepers association claimed that their members, with businesses in the central streets of Sant Antoni, which are undergoing a complete transformation, are suffering huge economic losses as the constructors fail to meet completion deadlines. Already the work is supposedly 2 months behind schedule & the shopkeepers believe there is at least another month to go before the roads are adequately open to their potential customers. The shopkeepers are urging the Town Hall in Sant Antoni to make the construction company employ more man power & to work around the clock to get the job done sooner rather than later.

CCTV cameras have been introduced, resulting in a dramatic reduction in the number of so-called "looky-looky" men, whose previous trade of cheap sunglasses, jewellery and watches evolved into something altogether more nefarious and narcotic
joan pantaleoni announced this morning that, after the success of the 7 cameras, they will install more:

 http://www.diariodeibiza.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pIdNoticia=72940
3 more (1 west end, 1 promenade and 1 ses variades):

 http://www.diariodeibiza.es/secciones/noticia.jsp?pIdNoticia=80477
just saw on the tv that they will install 5 new cameras instead of 3, which will mean 12 in total!!
More CCTV.

Sant Antoni is to increase the CCTV system installed in the town. 5 more cameras are going to be located in the areas where there are the most problems of law & order whilst at the same time there will be increased police presence & co-operation between the local police force & the Guardia Civil.
today i heard on the radio that they already have the authorisation to install those 5 new cameras: another one in the west end and the rest along the fountains square!!

now in english:

Sant Antoni Rescinds Contract To Reform Central Streets.
The town hall in Sant Antoni has decided to rescind the contract with the 2 construction companies who have being refurbishing the central streets & making them more attractive & pedestrian friendly over the winter. The Mayor of Sant Antoni suggested that there was no problem in cancelling the contracts because of the failure of the construction companies to meet work completion deadlines. The town hall has also decided to fine the companies 186.000€ for their failure to honour the contract. They are now waiting to see if the companies involved accept this decision or will try to fight the town hall in the courts.
Whilst the affected roads are passable by cars & pedestrians, there is still work to be done & the town hall will now employ another firm to finish the projects & put numerous faults right. Some work will be carried out this summer with the rest being left until winter when work will also start on giving a face lift to 6 more central streets.

from the ibiza sun:

Sant Antoni Council Claim They Are Applying The New By laws.
After criticism from the opposition, the PP Conservative town council in Sant Antoni said that they were applying the new by laws in the town even though some had only just become law. They reported that since the laws came in to force on the 27th June the big discos were seemingly complying with the new opening of 12 midday until 6 o’clock the next morning, which was very positive. Showing that the police had been active, the town hall pointed out that, since the start of summer, the police had reported 24 establishments & situations for creating too much noise. 2 establishments had been ordered to remove speakers they had outside on their terrace whilst 2 more have had their music systems officially sealed so that they could not play music ( ! ). The police had also carried out 16 sound metre readings to check sound levels at other establishments.
118 abandoned vehicles had been processed & 124 complaints had been formulated against posters put up in unauthorised areas of the town. 36 persons illegally giving out flyers had been reported as had 34 public relations agents operating illegally in the borough. Finally the police have so far reported 88 situations where there have been rubbish or cleaning infringements.
