CCTV cameras have been introduced, resulting in a dramatic reduction in the number of so-called "looky-looky" men, whose previous trade of cheap sunglasses, jewellery and watches evolved into something altogether more nefarious and narcotic
joan pantaleoni announced this morning that, after the success of the 7 cameras, they will install more:

OK, the West End has its problems and these need to be addressed, but the article's solution essentially seems to be to price thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of people out of the market. We can all do without people who just go there to piss it up for a week, but there are plenty of people who go for a night or two in the big clubs and a few other nights out in the West End because that's what they can afford and they are going to think twice about coming back if the only cheap bars left are of the type that serve Sunday roasts on 40 degree afternoons.

On the San An vs PDB debate, I agree that apart from Space, Bora Bora and the beach, PDB is shit, but that has been enough to swing it for me in the last few years. Unfortunately, when you are right beside Bora Bora, you inevitably end up dipping in and out whereas if you are staying in San An and have travelled to get there, you are more likely to stay all day and make the most of it so maybe that is the way to go after all...

Sant Antoni to Remodel 6 Central Streets.
Following the same concept as the Calle Ample reforms carried out just before summer, it was agreed at a council meeting last week to remodel 6 more central streets in the Town. These are the Dinamarca street, Ramon Llull street, part of the road leading to the Plaza España, the Calle Antoni Riquer & 2 small side streets near the Calles del Mar & Progresso. The reforms are part of a plan to improve access & circulation for potential customers in these central shopping streets. The cost of the project is over 4.60 million € part of which is financed by the Town Hall & the rest from other administrations such as the Consell Island Government.
Pedestrianisation of Ramon Cajal Street.
The Consell Island Government voted in favour of providing funds to help the Town Hall in Sant Antoni to turn the Ramon Cajal street into a one way street with wide pavements making it easy for pedestrians to shop in this commercial area of the town. Reportedly work on this project should start this autumn.
it started yesterday and "should be ready by march" :!:

Work Starts on Historic Centre.
Work started last week on the reform of the historic centre of Sant Antoni. Costing in total 4 million€, the present phase of the work will last all winter but the Mayor of Sant Antoni is apparently promising that the work will be completed by the 7th March. This week work on replacing the road surfaces, building new pavements, installing new urban furniture, facilities & infrastructures as well as renewing & improving drainage systems & putting telephone cables & electricity cables under ground started in the Calle Ramon Cajal street which was closed to traffic. However, the Calle Dinamarca, Calle Ramon Llull, Calle Progres (between the Alicante street & Calle Soledad), the Calle Sant Antoni (up to the Plaza España) & the Calle Antoni Riquer (from the Calle Ample to the Called del Mar) will also be reformed in the same way. Whilst the work is going on the pedestrian only streets in the West End of the town will be open to normal traffic to ease any congestion which these road works create.
Whilst presenting these road reforms, the Mayor went on to apparently say that he didn't rule out carrying out more improvements to the town over the winter as & when funds became available for other projects the Town Council had in mind.

and now in english:

Concern over Promenade Plans.
There is reportedly growing concern amongst the opposition politicians & some residents in the Sant Antoni over the plans of the PP Conservative Council to finally build the promenade from the port to Cala Gracio. This plan had been shelved in 2000 supposedly because of opposition to the plan from residents & disagreement amongst the politicians. However, there are reports that PP Conservative politicians are explaining the project again to affected land owners in the hope of acquiring the land & the permissions they need to be able to build the promenade. This structure will pass all along the sunset strip & there are lots of concerns that it will spoil the natural, world famous attraction of sitting on the rocks in this area & watching the sun set.
For their part the Balearic Government & the Town Hall said that the new promenade was important as it opened up Sant Antoni to the sea. The first part near the port & where the bars are located would be a cement based structure covered with stone paving some 4 to 6 metres wide whilst the remaining sector would be a 2 metre footpath along the coast by the sea to Cala Gracio.
The Town Hall claimed that the only opposition to this promenade was from the bars in the area that supposedly feared that they would lose part of their terraces to make way for the promenade. Seemingly some parts of these terraces are located in the area given over to the public right of way along the coast where the first & widest stage of promenade will pass.
The Town Hall implied that the coastal authorities in Madrid will pay for the promenade to be built. This apparently means that Madrid will control the project & will not fund a cement monstrosity but only something more in keeping with the environment. Once the plans for the new promenade are finally ready in early January, they will be presented to Madrid for approval & if possible work will start straight away. However, if there are any delays & the project cannot be finished by May, it is supposed that the work will be delayed until summer is over so as not to disrupt the tourist season.

Marina Plans Presented For Approval.
Later in the week it as announced in the local press that the plans to build a marina, presumably after the sea wall in Sant Antoni below the Acapulco apartments, has been returned to the Consell Island Government & the Town Hall in Sant Antoni from the Balearic Government so that they can inform in favour or not of the marina plan. It appears that the Town Hall is happy with the marina project because it appears to have adopted the changes they suggested should be made when it was first announced. They are also apparently in favour with the urban development, which will be built along with the marina seemingly on the Ses Variades area behind the sunset strip, as it maintains lots of open spaces for public use.
Though the Town Hall can pass opinions on the marina plan, it seems it will be the Consell who will actually have to say if the marina project goes ahead or not after the plans have been approved by the planning & the environment departments as well as after the marina plan has been put on public exhibition.

you might remember that joan pantaleoni announced in september (after what happened at the closing of cocoon) that before next summer they would have ready a new norm with the permitted opening/closing times for the clubs to avoid afterhours in san antonio. today diario de ibiza reports that they are working on it at the moment and it will be approved soon:

so seems like the judgement sundays after at garden of eden and the morning parties at extasis only lasted one summer..........

from the ibiza sun:

No Reason Not To Build Marinas.

It was decided over Christmas by the Consell Island Government that 2 new Marinas planned for Es Viver in Eivissa & Punto Xincho in Cala de Bou near the Milord Hotel can go ahead as long as they get the approval of the Balearic Government. The Consell also said that supposedly they would eventually be willing to approve the plan for a marina in Ses Variades area of Sant Antoni as long as the plans were changed & there was provision made for a cruise ship as well as a cargo handling area & jetty alongside the marina. Finally they decided to make no recommendation over a marina planned to be built in front of Can Pujol Fish Restaurant in the Cala de Bou area. The Consell apparently will wait for a study of the necessity of more berths on the island before deciding if this 4th new marina is needed or not.
The Consell did reject the plan to build yet another marina at the Punta Pinet in Cala de Bou saying that it would make the entrance to the bay of Sant Antoni too narrow & create too many berths for the existing demand.
After reading the reports in the local press & an interview with the promoter of the Punta Xincho Marina, The Ibiza Sun discovered roughly what the new marina would look like. It appears that there are fundamental changes planned for Punta Xincho & the coast line in Cala de Bou. According to the promoter, it seems that when the marina is built it will supposedly have a commercial centre made up of restaurants, bars & shops, a nautical club, warehouses & boat repair yards as well as a petrol station built in front of the existing apartments presumably on land re-claimed from the sea. We understand that none of the buildings are supposedly more than 2 storeys high. The 500 plus berths will mostly be for boats of 10 metres of length or smaller & will be sheltered behind a relatively large sea wall, which is seemingly needed to stop the rough weather that can often affect this section of the coast. The sea wall appears to stretch out into the sea apparently from the beach at Kumaras right round the coast to a point out to sea, level with the existing end of the landing jetty at Milord Hotel.

New Law to Control "After Hours" in Sant Antoni.

The Town Hall in Sant Antoni is preparing a new law to control the proliferation of "after hours" in the borough. This new law will affect all of Sant Antoni's discos & music bars. It will supposedly be ready for summer & will not allow this type of night time entertainment to re-open at 8am in the morning as at present. However, this type of bar & disco will still have to close at 6am or at 4am depending upon what type of licence the establishment has. The new opening hours will finally be fixed after a round of consultations with the opposition on the Town Council.
It was also reported that the town's new anti-street prostitution laws will be ready for summer. This new law will fine both the person offering sexual services in the street & the client. The proposed changes in the bye laws governing the town will also allegedly attack the problems of graffiti & of drinking in the street as well as illegal games & gambling in public areas.

and in related news..........

Javea To Sant Antoni Swim.

David Meca from the Barcelona region of Spain made history on the 5th January when he completed a 110kilometre swim from Javea to the port of Sant Antoni in around 25 hours 50 minutes. Reaching speeds of 5 kilometres an hour & swimming constantly even though at times he was physically sick & badly stung by jelly fish, David completed this incredible feat & was received at around 11h in the morning by the media & over 1000 cheering residents from Sant Antoni gathered on the harbour wall. Whilst David made good time after starting from Javea at around 10h on the 4th & reaching the islands in front of the Bay o Sant Antoni at around 7h on the 5th, the decision to continue into the port of Sant Antoni rather than land at the nearby Cala Comte beach was nearly too much for the brave swimmer. The extra 15 kilometres was nearly too much especially when he encountered 2 really big & thick shawls of jelly fishy near the entrance to the port. With the help of the support craft a path through the jelly fish was partially cleared so that David could continue & the support from his family & friends, who sailed out from Sant Antoni to meet him, helped him finally achieve his goal. Managing a wave to the crowds as he emerged from the water, David was whisked away to hospital for checks & recuperation for over 24 hours after what was a very gruelling challenge. Later David said that this difficult & arduous crossing was the challenge of his life so far & for the moment he had no other projects in mind but that wasn't to say that at some time in the future he wouldn't try another challenge. Only 24 hours after the swim David was fit enough to attend an official reception for the swimmer in the Club Nautico in Sant Antoni. Photos with civic dignitaries & admirers were taken & the champagne was opened to celebrate David who will possibly become a "Citizen elect" of Sant Antoni.
There were some reports suggesting that the Town Hall had sponsored David to the tune of 18.000€ to make this swim on the condition that he landed in the port of Sant Antoni. If this is true then it was money well spent as the publicity & photos of David's achievement were all over the Spanish National Media & though Sant Antoni was not mentioned as much as the name Ibiza, it was a great promotion for the whole island. There are hopes that David, after the success of this incredible swim, will take part in future tourist promotional acts & events as a tourist ambassador for Sant Antoni.
