Have Ibiza's Glory Days as a Dance Music Mecca Come to an End?

I'm not one to play devils advocate (lol) but bodybuilding doesn't necessarily equate to improved well-being. In fact, a lot of people who partake in body building suffer with conditions such as body dysmorphia, bulimia, steroid abuse, and, in my opinion the worst condition of all, low cut vest wearing.

absolutely

And also a bit like people that don't participate really (Referring to general fitness). In fact, a lot of people who don't partake in fitness suffer with obesity, risk of high blood pressure developing, increase risk of anxiety/depression and general lack of endurance.

Nothing wrong with a low cut vest on a Pigeon chested, carpet roll holding, fruit bowling meat head...Not being stereotypical of course

I love a nice racerback

Me too - ridiculous way of life that. Spending many many years lifting weights and doing plenty of cardiovascular work which improves their wellbeing both mentally and physically
I mean anyone that wants their body to look like a Greek God stood upon the great white pillars of Athens (Or in the centre of Amnesia) is a tool.

I wasn't actually having a pop at you or folk who work out, don't see anything wrong with it at all. When i used the term Muscle Marys in my (tongue in cheek) comment above, it was in reference to the big gay lads you'd see years ago at Bora Bora etc who were usually ripped.... i dunno how it came about but in the last 10 years or so there's defo been a recent surge in straight guys gettin into it, mates of mine included. Possibly linked to increased use of social media, people becoming more aware of health and fitness etc.

I do feel sorry for the Muscle Marys though, this whole hetero bodybuilding phase society is in - in particular in Ibiza - must be playing havoc with the gaydars.

lol - at Salinas it is increasingly difficult to know who is into who or what but the posing is pretty funny because it is pretty camp and light-hearted whereas the posing at somewhere like Ocean Beach isn't entertaining because it isn't camp or funny and is actually a much more sinister phenomenon, essentially a display of creatine abuse by the dead-eyed - a UK social phenomenon explained very well here http://www.vice.com/read/anatomy-of-a-new-modern-douchebag

That wasn't my experience of OCB. It was full of kids having fun. Tacky if you want to be a snob about it, but certainly not sinister.

yes I am snobby about it - so what? I think that place is a monster and has no place on the island. That article I linked sums up precisely why I think it's sinister.

I read the article. That wasn't my experience of OCB. Maybe I hit lucky. I'm 42 year old father of two, with no reason to defend the place, but it seemed like the kids in there were friendly and having fun

I'm 41 so I obv don't pretend to have a hotline to the yoof but it seems to me that there are a lot more sheep than there used to be and ibiza for me was always about the characters, freaks, misfits, eccentrics. I get the impression those current kids aren't really 'free' in the old Ibiza sense because they're all too vain because they're a bit brainwashed. Sounds a bit hippy I know but that's the feeling I get. If any OCB regulars want to challenge this, I'm all ears...

Don't think he is saying the place itself is sinister, just that he hates it. I think he is saying the whole bodybuilding culture is sinister.

As you were.

Can I agree with both of you? I went to OBC , somewhat reluctantly , but I really enjoyed it. There was nothing sinister about it. No aggro, loads of smiley people and talked to some nice folks. It wasn't what Id call an "Ibiza" vibe, and there were certainly no standout characters , freaks or misfits. And I could see why you could label them brainwashed but people were just having fun. It might not be 'genuine Ibiza' fun , but to label it as sinister is way over the top.

correct Felipe

it's the roider thing that gets me - horses for courses, each to their own blah, blah etc but I find it all really unnerving - and that whole stretch of San An seemed to be crawling with them when we were there. If that is the future of clubbing then it's game over

my daughters went to Ocean Beach this year. I vetted videos of each event and told them they were only allowed to go to Hed Kandi (lol) ..My reasoning being I didn't want them being around massive roiders.

I went to HedKandi at Ocean beach and didn't want to go. I actually mentioned to the people I was with that I don't think it would be my scene

When I said I don't think it was my scene I thought it would be full of people standing around with pricey drinks, posing.

In fact it was actually a blast! Everyone was drinking, socialising and dancing about and there was not one bit of attitude. Superb atmosphere and mixed it up from going to a top club

I'm the same, I hate what OBC stands for in many ways and most of the parties there are full of twats (Champagne Spray Party anyone?), but Hed Kandi is an exception, different crowd and always fun.

(I might be a bit biased by having a massive crush on Lovely Laura :) )

I couldn't be friends with someone who had ever been involved in champagne spray. The only spraying of alcohol should be the projectile vomiting that can occur after a heavy night.

as it happens Hed kandi was the party we went to. I did fancy the soul heaven ones they did a few years ago , with Joey Negro.
Would never attend the champagne spray thing in there or any other venue, even if I was getting free champagne. simply vulgar

the soul heaven parties in London used to be ok - good mixed crowd and music was alright for most part (you could always nip off to the karzy if the diva tracks went a bit too "praise the lord, peace in the valley"). weird how some guys who made their name playing the deep, soulful stuff ended up playing DC10 (eg Kerri Chandler, Chez Damier). Dennis Ferrer was the best out all those guys. Consistently got the mood spot on.
