You know you're from California when...

1. Your coworker has 8 body piercings and none are visible.
2. You make over $300,000 and still can't afford a house.
3. You take a bus and are shocked at two people carrying on a conversation in English.
4. Your child's 3rd-grade teacher has purple hair, a nose ring, and is named Breeze.
5. You can't remember...is pot illegal?
6. You've been to a baby shower that has two mothers and a sperm donor.
7. You can't remember...is pot illegal?
8. Gas costs $1.00 per gallon more than anywhere else in the US
9. A man gets on the bus in full leather regalia and crotchless chaps. You don't even notice.
10. Your car insurance costs as much as your house payment.
11. Your hairdresser is straight, your plumber is gay, the woman who delivers your mail is into S & M, and your Mary Kay rep is a guy in drag.
12. You can't remember...is pot illegal?
13. It's barely sprinkling rain and there's a report on every news station:"STORM WATCH 2005."
14. You pass by a high school and most of the kids you see are talking on a cell phone.
15. It's barely sprinkling rain outside, so you leave for work an hour early to avoid all the weather-related accidents.
16. Both you AND your dog have therapists.
19. Hey!!!! Is Pot Illegal????
20. The Terminator is your new governor.

Really, is pot legal in California?

My understanding is that it's legal for "medical purposes" under state law but is illegal for all purposes under federal law. I think the supreme court just ruled on it a few months ago in fact.

But speaking as someone who lives over here it seems like virtually everyone I know clearly has a debilitating medical condition ;)

This one is still so unfortunate. Makes me cry

Warren Beatty for 2006!!!!

Have you seen Bulworth? If he did it like that, he'd be an excellent governor 8)

I haven't seen Bulworth...but I had the horrific experience of seeing Arnold as a guest commentator on Monday Night Football. I just watched in amazement. The man has lived here for over 20 years and it sounds like he just walked off the boat...

Damn Nazi.

(I better shut up before I get put on one of those communists/anti-American government lists...)

 I would have thought his accent was the least objectionable thing about him to be honest! Seriously get Bulworth from your local Blockbuster - it's a very funny film. At least if Warren Beatty ever became governor he probably wouldn't go round using his old movie catchphrases all the time and thinking he's clever to do so - like threatening to "terminate" people and calling political opponents "girlie-men". What a dick!

Hey Anjali, by the way what's the clubbing scene like down there in SoCal? I've yet to investigate outside of San Francisco.

It is fabulous. You can't beat L.A. There is way too much to do here and I have many many memories of walking down Hollywood Blvd. at 8 AM to my car with my club clothes and makeup on, hoping a cop wouldn't drive past. ON A WEDNESDAY. It is wild. I am also originally from San Diego and the beach scene is awesome. Only beaches in So Cal you can legally drink on and it gets crazy.

How about in San Fran? I have only been there for like two hours and had dinner at the Hard Rock over where all those sea lions are.

Wow! LA sounds decent - maybe I should have gone there instead. San Francisco is a cool city, very quirky and diverse, and also scenic. I'm a bit depressed about the whole EDM scene at the moment though. I'm from the UK originally and I've only been here 7 months but I'm really missing my English clubbing. Sure SF gets all the big name DJs - probably more than most places in the US but I juts find the crowd kind of sucks. Like I went to see Steve Lawler last weekend. Anywhere else in the world the place would have been rammed and would have had an electric atmosphere. Steve played an awesome set - really nice dirty electro/tech house stuff - but the club was barely half full and by 2am the dancefloor had fewer than 100 people on it. I've experienced similar things in SF for little known DJs such as Carl Cox and Nick Warren and I just don't know why. People just don't seem to go all out for a good time like they do in UK and Ibiza and most other places. However I'm trying not to get too down as I'm told some of the smaller parties with more local DJs attract a much cooler crowd and have a better vibe! I'll explore them before I decide dto book my ticket home!

Steve Lawler was actually just in Hollywood as well. L.A. (and S.D., mostly L.A.), attracts the big name DJs. Paul Van Dyk was here like three times in one year, Pachagirl and I went to Avalon to see Sander Klienenberg and it was packed and crazy. L.A. has a lot of those huge stadium parties that several big name DJs play. But it also has a lot of "candy kids." I prefer going to the clubs. So Cal is very different from No Cal. They should be separate states, nothing against the north, they are just radically different.

However, I would still prefer to live in London for a while...although I think I would miss the sun. But I absolutely love it over there and would leave L.A. in a second. But second to NYC, L.A. probably has the best club scene...followed by Vegas which is only a 3 hour drive from L.A. vs. S.F. which is like 8 hours.
