You know you are from California when...

L.A. has a lot of those huge stadium parties that several big name DJs play. But it also has a lot of "candy kids." I prefer going to the clubs.

Interesting. Yeah I've noticed all those stadium gigs down south. Do they have a good atmosphere or are they just too big?

Actually I was considering getting some friends together and driving down for that Monster Massive thing at the end of the month. Not too bad a line-up. Will have to see if my bank account has recovered from Ibiza by then though!

I like the stadium parties if I am going with a good group and we stick together, otherwise I get annoyed. I don't know about you, or what you are like, but I do not like it when I feel good and these 18 year olds with fairy wings attack you with sweaty hugs and vicks vapo-rub. I have been to all ages parties where these YOUNG kids just couldn't manage their drug intake and would vomit all over the place, and you being in your own f-ed up state has to make sure you don't do something stupid like sit in it. But the plus side is that there is always room to dance, in the clubs it gets rather packed. I know a lot of people going to Monster Massive and I might join them just because I need to go dancing before I go insane...

I agree with Anjali that LA has probably got the best scene West of the Rockies. They have the massive night clubs such as Avalon and Spundae, and they have great Deep House venues such as Deep (hosted by Marques Wyatt) and KingKing. Having frequented the club scene in LA, SD and Orange County, my rankings are as follows:

1) LA
2) OC
3) SD

Yup! I firmly believe that OC has a better scene than SD when it comes to deep funky house. I am not really a fan of the thumpa thump thump stuff or the tiddly tiddly tiddly stuff. I am more into the OM, Defected, MAW, Soulfuric stuff. What makes OC far better than SD in that category is that you get a very decent percentage of the crowd that is genuinely into the music.

I also do not tend to be a fan of really big clubs. I like the smaller venues as it tends to be more personal.

Everyone from CA is on here today!!!

Uggh totally not up for all that candy nonsense. Even if I was a decade younger - like 17 or something I wouldn't be. So basically are you saying that the crowd at the stadium gigs like MM is predominantly 18 yo trance fairies, because I won't bother going if that's the case :( .

Your point about kids not managing their drug intake interested me. In NorCal, my impression is that you will be either one of 2 things:

1. an underage candy raver who takes that stuff - probably too much of it, or
2. a more grown up raver who never takes anything at all (hence why clubs seem to empty at 2am as people get tired).

It seems to be a case of extremes. No happy medium whatsoever sadly

Don't go insane.... it's bad for you! :)

I just got in after a looong week of running around SD from dawn till dusk. So we are now one happy family.

Hey now! I fal into that category of substance virgins. Maybe PachaGirl79 and Anjali will take my virginity one day. Although I can last pretty long with a couple of drinks, provided the DJ is to my liking.

:) Maybe we should have a state-wide California Spotlighters meet-up at some stage?

Nice one - very wise if you can manage it. I agree about the music - I have "come-up" on many imaginary pills over the last few months - most notably when seeing Nick Warren (to my surprise) and the Scumfrog. 8)

I think a California meet up would be interesting...

As far as the candy kids, yes they have a large presence at the massives. BUT if you organize a big group of your own then it is fun because then you can make fun of their fairy wings...

I think I still might go...just for the hell of it. so LET'S ALL GO!

Could we pull off their fairy wings?! Or would that not be suifficiently plur?

Axon, that is COMPLETELY against PLUR guidelines. So that means more reason to do it.

Don't get me wrong, everyone is entitled to do WHATEVER...but I cannot STAND that jumping in one place, moving your legs as if you are doing jumping jacks dance while holding those really long lights in one's hand so that when you want to pass, you have to crawl on the floor to avoid being hit. Does anyone know what i mean???

OR the light show/hand rub given by someone you don't even know??? WHAT THE F?

I just don't get it...

Let's do it!!!!! I like to think of myself as a friendly guy, but I'm way too cynical and British for any of that plur nonsense!

By the way, have you noticed that after about 2pm every day (when all the Europeans go off to bed) we Californians (native and adopted) totally own this forum! 8)

I have noticed that and I am jealous cause they are all off getting drunk already...

Does England have these types of parties? Or is this PLUR/Candy raver crap purely an American phenomenon? Sorry, I don't know its history.

OF COURSE!!! We are into community, especially ones that want to pull off fairy wings and throw candy bracelets back at the candy kids...Or rip off that ELMO backpack...

that's what happens when you mix meth and no parental control.

I went to the Global Dance Fest at Red Rocks last summer, and they were there in droves w/ their Mickey Mouse gloves, oversized pants, and visors on.

Damn kids!!!!

Err sadly we have some.... crasher kids in this photo. They're equally derided but probably not as common as in USA I would guess. I was never one I'm proud to say!
