Thats a bit harsh calling him that. He has had to make do with a very poor selection of players and frankly should never have been in the position anyway. As Eamon Dunphy correctly put it, the only thing Staunton is guilty of is being ambitious. Yes he doesnt have the managerial experience yet and some of his selections have been a bit questionable but the fact is we do not have the players at the moment to compete at the highest level.
Out of last nights team, I think we only had two players (Given and Dunne) who you would say could challenge to get on a worldclass team. The rest are either very poor or too young and inexperienced.
If you want to blame anyone, it has to be the FAI, but isnt that the case everytime. These guys just seem to have this perennial habit of getting everything drastically wrong.
For whats its worth, considering the team we had out there last night I thought we did well and we deserved a draw, even with 10 men. For the first 25 mins I thought we were going to get hammered but then we got into the game and looked the better team at the end of first half and during the second half.
This group was lost in Cyprus last year which is very unfortunate as I dont think this Czech team is that good. Looking at the other groups, this was an easy group. The press and everyone else will be looking for Stauntons head now and he will probably go, but in all honesty we need some new players before we can challenge again.
