Terry is the obvious choice but I believe if Gerrard was skipper then it would take his international game to a new level.

Since being LFC captain he has become a world beater and similarly to how Beckham raised his game before him when he had been made captain. I think the same could apply to Stevie G.

I admit the same principle could apply to Terry but we match winners like Gerrard is what we need...............in football that is the difference between success and failure (e.g. Eng v Bra 2002, Eng v Por 2006 - we had a sum total of about 3 chances in the 2 most important games for our nation in the last 4 years)

Gerrard had a pretty poor WC.

Terry for me.

and terry didn't.......he was all over the place against teams like trinidad and ecuador.

anyway, thats part of my point..........give him the band and watch his game rise (same happened for liverpool);)

i would go for gerrard

terry, hargreaves and lennon are the only english players who can come out of this world cup head held high. i still maintain gerrard only had a bad tournament because he was alongside lampard. one had to go, and based on the amount of chances lampard squandered, I'd have hauled him off. He had enough chances alone to make your world cup a different story.

I wouldn't be so quick to lay the boot into the whole team though - I think the way Sven went about this world cup is a scandal. Theres vast sections of the Scottish support who wanted England to keep him in the job for obvious reasons.

has to be terry - he is a natural leader, and he is hard so players will listen to him

yeah but he cries a lot as well.................so he can't be a real man8O

Terry... he is one hard b.astard, I can't imagine him letting the team off lightly if they're playing sh1t!

Oh and we don't want a Northern Monkey for a captain ;)

stevie G is well 'ard, i've got the stud marks to prove it, and haven't you heard the song.

and Terry wears his socks over his knees to try and be all 'cosmo', southern fairy :p ;)

Gerrard. no doubt. he has the ability to lift a team. drop lampard and put hargreaves in while your at it.

lampard is toss. Gerrard was bound to have a poor world cup playing next to lamps.

I think Flintoof should keep it. He's shown great leadership qualities in the latest series, though perhaps not generating good perfomances

Terry, Gerrard is a scouse toerag

oi missus!!!

may be controversial but i would give it to Gary Neville. Gerrard doesn't talk enough and instruct on the pitch, Neville isn't afraid of speaking his mind and getting his point across, he's very honest in interviews and doesn't look for or hide behind excuses for poor performance.

his only downside of course is that he plays for Man U!!

hmmmmm!!!!! fundamentally disagree with you. :? his monotonous tone is one of the most distinctive features of any pitch he plays on;)

when beckham became england captain he grew up, he could barely speak before it let alone read out a speech like yesterday. also, there is no way he'd have been shouting his mouth off at refs, etc, before he got given the armband.

well possibly, though he shouldn't be awarded it on the basis that he can't score penalities :x!! to be fair there are 3 good candidates in Terry, Gerrard and Neville - McClaren has options.
