who lives in ibiza??

Do you have to speak Spanish to live in Ibiza? Obviously I know it would help, but in a few years I'd love to re-locate to Ibiza, but don't speak any Spanish so obviously I'd have to conquer that before doing so!

Also, does Ibiza have a main office industry? I.e for accountants? I'm studying to be a qualified accountant now, would there be an industry for me to work in over there :?:

in your profession i'd say faultless fluent spanish was a must and catalan would be a tremendous advantage. there are of course accountants, lawyers here in ibiza - but remember at 100,000 people the market is limited and opportunities are difficult to come by. just look at the unemployment figures here in winter!

ps i live here too (and i sometimes do a bit of accountancy, though only with our consultancy in britain - i don't need to be there to crunch a few beans!)

Ahem... ok! Looks like I will need to find an English speaking company who will pay for me to work and live in Ibiza, commuting back to England very infrequently over Christmas, and having 12weeks off over the summer

Can you speak Spanish/Catalan Stephen? Whats the difference between the two?

i speak spanish and i understand a fair bit of catalan though i can't string more than a few words together. catalan is 'a bit like' a mix of spanish and french though i find that the pronunciation is much easier than both french and spanish. having moved up to san jose village i'm much more exposed to catalan (eivissenc) than previously.

Becki,

Spanish and Catalan are romanic languages, like French or Italian. Catalan is speak in Catalunya (my region) part of Valencia, the Balearic Island and a city called Alger in Corcega I think. It's one of the oficial langages in Spain (with Spanish, Basque and Galician)

Stephen, I studied 6 years of french and I think catalan is closer to french than spanish

wow - so it's a bit like speaking Welsh/Scottish/Irish?

Why don't us boring English people have another language? There's always Roman I spose....

I guess it's the same to Welsh, Scottish and Irish.

It's a great advantage, I'm totally bilingual, I can have a conversation with both languages at same time and it helps lots when you learn foreing languages.

But lots of people from the areas where's only Spanish think it's a sinn and think that if you come to Barcelona and try to speak in Spanish you'll be bullied

Of course you can, it was a local joke ;)

I speak catalan and spanish as mother languages. I started my english lessons at age of 8 at school, I took extra lessons when I was 14 for 3 years and I spent six months in the UK, I got my first certificate there and was on the advanced course but I decided I prefered to get back home than take the exam ;)

When I was 17 I started my french lessons cos I wanted to go to Paris for an international work camp (I don't know how you call it in english  ) and that was my best school, cos I spent 4 summers there and I had a very good level on french. Now I can understand spoken and written french and if I feel very confident I can try and speak it :D

I also tried to study italian but I couldn't get on time to my lessons so it was a waste of money :?

Well Sil you'll be very proud to know I have just ordered a "Teach yourself Spanish" DVD from Amazon, so hopefully in a few weeks we can have a chat in "Foro Espanol" ;)

That's excellent Becki!

And don't be shy and post in the spanish forum if you want, everybody is very nice, specially with people learning spanish ;)

However, when the English speak Spanish, my Spanish pals said it is very "sweet" to listen to and almost like the Argentinians?! :? ......

.....but always think we sound like robots when we say "MI NOMBRE ES LUISA!!!" Hehe!

Come on and join the spanish, it's a very small comunity (just 10 regular posters) but everybody is very polite, nice and civilized. And you'll learn lots of slang and localism that will really impress your bf ;)

Ha Ha Stephen, as if! Come on, we all know Ibiza only exists from Space opening until DC10 closing and clubbers and those paid to serve them in those four months ever set foot on the island.

Next you'll be claiming that families holiday there and all sorts  ;)

There was a thing on a holiday program last week where a woman paid about £600 for two weeks in Spain (they do it in all the major cities) and you get two weeks in a nice hotel, 20 spanish lessons and 10 spanish dancing lessons :D It looked really good. You could also choose to share a room with others or even live with a spanish family which reduced the cost by quite a bit.

Found it.............
