i remember when i saw laurent garnier play his farewall gig at WLS in sep 2001 cos he had tinitus............i've seen him 3 times since:?

Ive had Tinitus for ages thats why i wear the ear plugs

I think ill just keep on being pretentious rather than go deaf! :D
 
I just got my gf to watch 'It's all gone Pete Tong' and she quickly decided it wasn't so uncool to wear earplugs!
 
I'm just half-deaf... no ringing or anything... just can't hear a damn thing when people are talking to me!

The most common cause of tinnitus is damage to the hearing nerves in the ear (cochlea or inner ear). We hear things through a stream of nerve impulses going from the cochlea to the auditory system in the brain. If the tiny nerves in the ear are damaged or destroyed, this produces an abnormal stream of impulses, which the brain interprets as a sound. This causes the noise associated with tinnitus.

Tinnitus in older people is usually caused by natural hearing loss (presbyacusis), which lessens the sensitivity of hearing nerves. In younger people it is most often caused by damage to hearing as a result of excessive noise.
However, there are a number of other causes of tinnitus. It is not always possible to identify the exact cause even after examination by a specialist.
Other common causes include:
  • excessive wax in the ear causing it to become blocked;
  • middle ear infection (otitis media) or glue ear (serous otitis media);
  • otosclerosis (stiffening of the tiny bones which transmit sound from the eardrum to the sound-detecting organ, the cochlea);
  • Ménière's disease (a condition causing problems with balance)
  • anaemia (in which the thinner blood circulates so rapidly it produces sound); and
  • pierced eardrum.
Less commonly, tinnitus may also develop as a result of:
  • exposure to sudden or very loud noise (eg gunfire, explosion);
  • a head injury;
  • impacted wisdom teeth (when wisdom teeth haven’t completely moved into the normal position);
  • adverse reactions to certain drugs such as antibiotics, diuretics, aminoglycosides, quinine and aspirin, (this is more likely when the dosage is exceeded), and also allergic reactions;
  • solvent abuse, alcohol abuse and other drug abuse;
  • high blood pressure and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis); and
  • overactive thyroid gland.
Tinnitus is rarely a symptom of a more serious problem but there can be other causes such as tumours, spasm, and abnormal blood flow.
Some people relate their tinnitus to stressful events in their life, such as bereavement.

Discoteca at Space, absolutely crystal clear. The Box at Ministry has a great sound, but it's a wee bit loud, the bar was just deafening last time I was there and not too clear either. Back home, the Stiff Kitten (new club in Belfast run by the guys who do Shine) has a Funktion 1 which, again, gives immaculate sound but it can be a bit quiet due to the flats opposite the front door. When I saw Yoda there he kept turning it up and people had to run over and turn it down again.

I disagree to an extent about the Discoteca at Space - on the dance floor it's superb, around the edges it's not the best quality and once you start to move behind the DJ, the "holes" are too big to tolerate. I know you can't get speakers everywhere, but there are clubs in UK which cover the whole area of the club better, on average.

This might make you laugh but there is a small afterhours club in Liverpool called The G Bar, an absolute jewel in UK's clubbing crowd (funky/chunky/tribal/dutch house), largely unknown except to local community. One the best sound systems EVER - crystal clear, but really strong baselines, complete depth, perfect coverage of low/med/high - amazing 8)

Agree about discotecha - I thought the sound in there was pretty awful - room's too big and you get all sorts of echoes and reverberations off the walls. When I saw digweed + Cox in there last year all I could hear was the *whump whump whump* of the bass and no mid or high end.. but as stated I was nearer the back of the dancefloor, I'm sure it's better in the middle.

Space in Miami has great sound system.......so does Buzz Washington, DC just closed that club last week to make way for our new baseball stadium, national passtime, what are you gonna do?!?!?

Where was Buzz? Is that in the same area as the old Tracks or DC Ballroom?
