Veils on women

I thought as this has been in the news so much lately it would be interesting so see what people on here think.

The big debate is whether it is right for muslim women to wear a veil? There are different types of veil, ones that cover only the hair and neck but leave the face open, veils that cover the entire head but leave the eyes open to view, or the most extreme, the veils that cover the entire head and eyes, with only a mesh screen for the woman to view out of.

Do you think women in England should be allowed to wear a veil? Is it their right to wear whatever they want? Or does it just ostracise these women even further from the rest of society?

Discuss :p

i suppose it depends on how pretty they are

Personally people should be allowed to wear what they want but i do find the whole veil thing (covering face) very rude and sometimes threatening.

A friend of mine was shopping in Asda in the summer with his model girlfriend and she got beat up by a muslim woman in a veil because she didnt agree with what she was wearing and said it was against her religion

this shouldn't even be an issue. it is their right to wear what they please. last week an english pub banned people from wearing kilts as fruity ladies may embarass other punters by lifting scots' kilts up. ridiculous.

i agree that if you want to fit into a society you should try and do what is normal for that country

anyway i never understand a viel thing, a women if not allowed to wear a motorbike helmet into a bank yet can wear a viel.:!:

surly all bank robbers should starting wearing veils?

I think the understanding needs to come from both sides.

But v quickly:

1. Security
2. Teaching

Two areas where veils need to be removed.

The rest is part of the rich tapestry that we call culture - I love it personally. :D

I'd really love to add something intellectual to this thread but I am way too hungover so am going to go back to being a pretenious w@nker with Robder

Aren't you allowed to wear a holmet into banks? 8O 8O 8O 8O

Re the subjet of the post it's all about personal freedom and people should be allowed to wear whatever they want.

From a moral point of view :

As long as the woman's wearing it for herself rather than under command from males it's up to her.

People should be allowed to wear what they want. However (and it's a big however) this should be an equal thing. If (for example) a causasian woman wants to wear a mini skirt in Saudi Arabia this should be OK too.

(From a personal point of view I do find the whole veil thing a bit threatening though)

my friend has a burhka he bought back from afghanistan. Very strange item of clothing, really scary when it's put on.

I think people should wear what they want, but also understand that our society is a society based on being able to see and hear what women and thinking/saying, and we don't like it when we can't do that.

Thus there are some occasions when common sense should prevail and the veil should be removed, like in important meetings and discussions, or like rob said, teaching.

There was a story in the paper this week that some criminal escaped and evaded catpure for a few days cos he was wearing a veil - you've got to admire him for his genius thinking

agree, also freedom of speak so if the guy wants to say he can not speak to someone a viel no one should jump on his bank

btw I made up the bank thing:)

My view on it is that I have no problem with the headscarf that covers a woman's hair and neck. I dont see that being so different to me wearing a hat or something with a hood.
But I don't really agree with the full veils that cover a woman's face and even eyes sometimes! How are you supposed to convey how someone is looking/feeling when they are hiddin under a black veil? I just dont think there is a place for it in today's society and I think it does ostracise these women from everyone else.
I mean, how many times has anyone smiled at a woman in a veil whilst walking past them in the street? How can you interact with someone who is totally hidden?
I just think a veil removes these women even further from today's society and they become nobodys... they dont seem to have an identity, just a silent black moving object on the street! It's disturbing.

question i'd ask if the women want to wear the bloody things...

surlly most women want to look sexy, not have their head covered

A definite candidate for compulsory veil wearing

whenever they're asked it's often not got much to do with religion but more that they feel safer or protected almost. Which I think is a rubbish reason - you've got to deal with the world somehow! it's a bit like when celebrities wear sunglasses to hide themselves, but these women don't have anything to hide themselves from!

I'd love to wear a veil on days when I'm looking rough, would be brilliant.

In Barcelona there are thousand hundred of scooter-bike drivers and banks wanted to forbid getting into cash points with the helmet, but they failed ;)

I dont think you are allowed to wear bike helments into banks here. Im sure that's a law over here that you have to take them off :?
