Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel bouncer, Paulo Caesar Baptista arrested

As with every Ibiza season, 2011 provided its fair share of shocks and surprises.
This past summer however, matters took a decidedly more sinister twist than usual,
with Abel Ureña's unfortunate demise sending seismic shockwaves
throughout the island and beyond
.

On the night of 19th August, Ureña, a 28 year-old bartender and an employee
at Ibiza's newly opened Ushuaia club/hotel, was unfortunate enough to meet
the wrath of convicted criminal Paulo Cesar Batista.

The latter, a bouncer at the same venue, felled Ureña with one critical punch,
in the process ending his life on the very grounds he showcased the skills that -
for a short period at least - granted him such acclaim.

Ureña's 'crime', according to The Diario de Ibiza was to 'flirt' with the girlfriend of Batista,
an incident for which he would pay the ultimate cost.

Batista's heinous actions were made all the deplorable as he fled the island immediately after,
quickly disappearing
with said girlfriend in tow.

It wasn't long before the impact of the news drew inevitable controversy from many angles,
the most significant of which centred around Ushuaia's (and indeed, much of Ibiza's)
apparently lax attitude towards security.

On an island that has long lost much of its soul to the trappings of greed and corruption,
Ureña's murder also acted as a potent and timely reminder of what can happen
when the wrong people are placed in positions of influence.

Those close to Ureña can however, finally rest somewhat easier with the recent news
that Batista has been caught in Holland.

While early reports reveal little, the news is sure to provide some closure
to a bereaved crew of family and friends, all of whom have campaigned tirelessly
against the island's (and specifically, Ushuaia's) recruitment policies over the past few months.

The emotional scars may never leave, but for now at least, those really affected
by this tragedy are one step closer to the justice that has thus far unfairly evaded them.

From the Ibiza Sun last week:

Murderer Detained

The doorman who fled from the island in August after fatally punching a co-worker at the luxury Ushuaia hotel has been arrested in Holland, according to the Portuguese daily paper, Correio da Manhä. Details are still fairly sketchy as to how Pablo César Baptista arrived in Holland and the details of his arrest are not yet known. The detained man is also wanted by Portuguese authorities for his part in a prostitution/drugs ring.
