I was there also and have really mixed views on it. On the surface it was a really great party when you look at numbers and quality of sound especially up the back. There was an amazing amount of bass bins and tops making for a really full sound and you could still turn round and talk to your mates when you wanted to with space to dance as Danny said. But there were issues, some personal and Danny I'm sure you won't be pleased to hear we had problems as did several others getting in with our IMS delegate passes which was a sore one to take as we ended up paying 60 Euros entry. Then once in unless you had a table it was the ticket system to buy drinks which is not unusual for an event of this size but they had clearly underestimated the number of ticket stations they needed as it was 45 mins to pay for your ticket then you had to go and wait at the bar for your drink. I guarantee they lost a lot of revenue and pissed a lot of punters off in the process.
But what it comes down to for me is complete change of image for Ushuaia. Although their parties attracted vast numbers previously there was still that feeling of an intimate party, especially up close to the DJs. It felt some what rebellious dancing in the old Ushuaia but now it almost felt sterile. I'm sure this will change in time as the venue ages and finds it's personality but for me the essence of the old Ushuaia was lost. And with that change the music policy from the old is and will change. VIP tables I knew were moaning about the music not being lively enough i.e 'commercial' where in actual fact I was loving the music as that was what I was there for, the Cadenza Crew, but that is going to happen when all of a sudden the focus of attention goes from the clubber who's there because of the music to the bottle service crowd who are there despite of the music. And being a promoter and DJ myself I understand the financial implications of attracting this type of crowd I just hope it doesn't dilute the true clubber and creative types in whatever field and drive them somewhere else.
At IMS we were asked could Vegas be the new Ibiza but I felt it more pertinent, with the events and venues of this style being more prevalent in Ibiza, to ask could Ibiza become the new Vegas.......?
