2.2 million people visit ibiza

at most 500,000 are clubbers. (do the maths on a 12 week season in 7 clubs some of which are rammed and some which have only a few hundred). I have seen figures of 1m clubbers per year mentioned for ibiza - mostly by people within the scene - do me a favour!

the biggest spenders per head on the island are cruisers and the nautical sector. whilst i know you lot spend absurd amounts of money it only finds its way to the pockets of a few people (many of whom are not in the system - dealers, cream, etc etc.)

ordinary folks don't spend so much but they do come from april to october - without them not a single hotel could survive and then where would we be?

i know that the clubbing scene is an important part of the economy but its importance is usually exaggerated by those who are part of it. The point is that people are now no longer coming to ibiza in april may june and october - the hotel figures last year were disastrous - and this is mainly becasue of the misconception of ibiza's image.

i know it's great, i live my life here without seeing a single clubber, it's easy, the hard bit is getting that message across to the public.

I assume that these numbers are passed on by Promotors/Bar owners etc - so possiblu exaggerated by themselves as a promotional/bargaining tool for the next seasons DJ bookings?

Yep can see that, but then a lot of the nautical sector will be found splashing their cash in the VIP areas of the clubs, specially those of Pacha/ El Divino and the likes....

Ibiza is not an expensive Island *(for a non-clubber) so I can understand how difficult it must be for local bars/restaurants/shops to up their revenue - especially in the Northern most part of the Island

I would have thought it would be the opposite way round - the family orientated holidaymaker would avoid June/July/Aug and Sept like the plague to keep away from the Clubbing Holidaymaker and that they would visit the Island in droves during April, May, June and October?

i know it's great, i live my life here without seeing a single clubber, it's easy, the hard bit is getting that message across to the public.

Well for visiting the Island predominantly as a clubber for the first few years but not clubbing as much now but still wanting to visit once or if I am lucky, twice a year, I still have to explain the lure of Ibiza year after year (from a non-clubbing side). I can sort of understand how hard it must be for the Govt. to do this. You guys must feel like you're banging your head against a brick wall in doing this..... the minute you walk off the plane and out of Arrivals you are inundated with advertisements for all the clubs/bars/dj's - pushing the whole party Island image - I dont recall ever seeing advertisements or promotions for anything other than that of the clubbing variety driving anywhere in Ibiza - why do you think this is?

Its one of the things I dont fully understand about the Govt. If they are trying to clean up the Islands image, or rather promote its cultural side, why not advertise those points as well. Is there no Cultural Division of the Ibicencan Govt that promotes the non clubbing side of the Island - it seems strange that there isnt?. Its really do find all this interesting, so please dont take any of my comments in a negative way - just trying to get my head around the two sides of tourism in Ibiza and the way its perceived.....

yes there is a govt agency which promotes tourism in ibiza but let's face it trekking round a museum or art gallery isn't quite as sexy as going to a club if you're a journalist reporting on the island.

unfortunately the family market don't see that ibiza's clubbing season only lasts for 12 weeks, they see it as an all year round malarky, (as do a few erroneous articles i've seen aimed at clubbers) and therefore give the island a wide berth.

i'm sure there is some crossing of cultures with yachty people going to pacha, gays going yachting, and clubbers going gay, and why not, there's room for everyone here.

Indeed there is Stephen. But that's not easy to sensationalise, So... most media publicity focuses on that that is. Having said that, none of seen the program yet. If it merely suggests that lots of drugs get taken in Ibiza than the problem will people's value judgement of that basic fact. If it suugests that's what Ibiza's all about and the police can't or won't protect innocent holidaymakers from dealers and drug crazed loons, that' something entirely different.

Gay club yachting - now there's a niche market.....So...All Aboard Ducky anyone? Nitefly - you can be Master Bates to JJ's Cabin/Closet Boy

Abta plays down Ibiza drugs problem
Staff reporter

IBIZA'S fears about the negative impact Thursday night's BBC documentary about the island's drug problem will have on tourism appear unfounded.
Official complaints have been made with the British Ambassador in Madrid about the content of the Drugland documentary. Yesterday a spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents said that they had not received a single call from a concerned member. “There is always an element of drug abuse in every holiday resort in the world - apart from our own problems here in Britain - not just in Ibiza. What is more, in many cases the penalties for drug abuse overseas are much harsher than here in the UK. Our simple message to people is don't do it. “The documentary will have no negative impact on family holiday bookings to Ibiza,” the ABTA spokesperson said.
The undercover filming not only featured drugs being dealt on the island but gangs from England being busted by the drug squad.
