Travelling The World

Most people who own property and have 3 cars and have lots of things can't take off to South America for 8 months.

.

yep yep yep, very true in terms of longer term breaks.

BUT (and I dont have 3 cars, far from it!)

I can take off for say 3/4 weeks - which within the context of what I want to see or do at a time, is near enough adequate to provide an experience.

Yeah, I agree. I think many people can still manage their yearly holidays while having a mortgage.

I just don't know many people who can take off for a year, when in the previous year they have been paying mortgages, doing renovations to their house etc.

A friend of mine and her boyfriend went off for 6 months and had a renter live in their house, but the renters didn't cover the cost of the mortgage.

I know in some places thats possible, (to rent out your house at mortgage cost) but it certainly isn't here. And, again, thats a couple on two incomes, not a single person.

I wish I had that confidence! Alas, I have not got the balls to change horses mid race.

Don't get me wrong man sometimes i do wish i would've done better for myself years ago and if my family could've afforded to put me through full time college which for the working class at that time here was not an option in Ireland or at least working class areas of Dublin:confused: (i ended up paying myself through part time college a few years later but sadly never finished the degree as the price of the course went up) and have a career and all that, but there are one or 2 old mates of mine with a career and wife and 2.4 kids, and they are actually bored, maybe they settled down too soon who knows, but whilst they might have stability, etc ask yourself does that REALLY make one happy (everyone to their own) i don't even particular like what i do but im doing it a few years now and it's what im used to and it's a job,but if i manage to clear my debts or at least get them down to a very resonable level (wishful thinking) and get some cash together then im off travelliing, and when i get back ill know by then exactly what i wanna do with my life, that is if i don't stay abroad, id miss the football too much though knowing me:lol:

You can achieve pretty much anything you want if you are prepared to work hard enough and make sacrifices. You can apply this anything in life, whether it is getting a better job, getting on the property ladder, travelling the world.

Also, the grass is always greener for most people. Often what you perceive as happiness, isn't. Once you get there, it doesn't solve all your problems.

Sounds like the footy makes you happy Johnny, good for you.

I often thought about the traveling thing and have I missed out. Been to Ibiza a few times along with US and Mexico (both short term holidays).

I hit 30 and had to make a decision on if I wanted to start a family or travel the world. I chose to former and became a father and got hitched last year.
You got to play the cards life dealt and without going sociably OTT growing up with a "dad" that was always on the piss and a lets say less than capable mother I could have ended up with far less in life.

I had major issues a few years back over not getting to do in life what I wanted (good education, uni etc) and was constantly comparing myself with others.

These days I'm happy doing a bit of freelance design stuff with my driving job and chilling out with my wife and daughter...I do want to check out some more of the world but that will be done over my whole life time...spread it out and all that.8)

The amount of people on this thread saying "I wish.." or "One Day" etc. is testiment enough to make everyone wanna go. I for one graduate soon and will be off around the world hopefully come January after a bit of saving. Aiming to work to live etc., thus immersing oneself in the culture a bit more. Had a few offers of friends wanting to come with but declining, wanna do it by myself. Other than that, no plans really. Do the standard and wedge off to Thailand and see what happens. Plans are for organised people. Will have about £2k for everything before I go...

Whatever happens, it's better than going back to Bognor...

And P.S. I'm in about £16K worth of debt...

well said,it's all about making sacrifices and working hard alright, funnily enough i was financially sound a few years ago but in recent times ive been the complete opposite but how and ever you live and learn.

As for football, well yes it is my main vice, and and always has been, although contrary to some people;s belief it's not the be all and end all for me,although could never do without it.

God good thread this and no bickering for once :)

I agree, anyone who says "ooh maybe one day/I'd really like to/I've always wanted to" etc etc... just GO!!! Seriously, you will only live to regret not doing it.
I think people who want to go travelling but are scared to do so should bite the bullet and go for it. You can always come home if you dont like it :)

word. first, there's absolutely no point of no turning back! the world we live in today is (generally) so safe and if anything happens you'll be back home in say max 72hrs from nearly any point in the world.

regarding the point agentundercover and morbyd were referring to (standard of living). i know, this is really something that can keep you away from doing long-term travels and probably live in less "luxury" surroundings. but as soon as you are there (whereever "there" is in your imaginations) and you're in the travellers groove, you quickly notice you can in fact live without your "luxury" without missing anything. because what you experience during your travels is much more worth than having a 4* hotel with sat tv et al. you simply cannot compare it to a weeks' holiday on a beach where everything is about pampering yourself (which is absolutely okay if you have only a short holiday and you just want to relax and maybe party).

if you're abroad travelling, meeting new people and having a good time, you suddenly notice almost all your material belongings you have back home aren't important at all. you learn to be happy in much less luxuruiously surroundings. but to be fair, i was also surprised how fast you get used to having all these things again once you get back...

What are you talking about? You had a perfectly decent place last summer... with a big terrace with plastic furniture, and a 2 minute walk to Bora Bora!

That's what I'm thinking for New Years next year.... Irina needs some convincing though.

why?????

jesus. id thought shes snap at the chance to be close up with the wildlife.

i've got "project kingfisher" on the go at the mo, and have only a mere blue speck of a photo so far! blighters are hard to get close to, and thats if you find em!

I am about to ask for 3 months off work june - september this year. I can only get that amount of time off bcos work pay for me to go part time to Uni so I am stuck to Uni holidays as i have to return next semester

Although a few of my freinds say they will join me if I decide to go travelling it will be largely on my own. I would travel to aisa and northern australia!!

However in the back of my mind there is a loud voice screaming "WORK A SEASON IN IBIZA"!!! Im thinking - would it really be that good working in Ibiza? Its all very well going there, as I do, for 1 week a year and raving it up, but would the reality of cleaning chav puke off the floor of a west end bar every night be that much fun!!??

SEASON IN IBIZA OR TRAVEL ??? hmmmmmmmm :?:

Well a beer in Asia will cost you 10p, a beer in Ibiza will cost you €10... so go figure lol.

Seriously... both appeal to me a lot. Ibiza would be one mad summer, loads of clubbing, but ultimately you'll probably end up in a lot of debt!
Asia/Oz would be a hell of a lot cheaper, you will see more things, experience more crazy travelling stuff, and meet more people.

Can you not do both? Do one this year and one next year?

This will sound terrible, but meeting new people is not particularly high on my agenda, I have enough problems shaking stalkers off! - certainly not a reason to go travelling - certainly certainly not if its just fellow western europeans following the same trail!

However, south american love goddesses? Now we are talking!

some of the sights i've seen, and that you will see in the third world, make cleaning chav puke up sound like a holiday in itself

And it makes you realise how lucky we are with our fancy Ipods, Digicams etc etc!

you can't even compare roughing it in Europe to roughing it in Asia for example. Even the worst hotel in San An is probably luxury in comparison!
