Travelling The World

A girl in the job is taking a year out next month and going travelling the world with her B/F,she said it cost her about Eur 2,000 for flights, and she's got about Eur 14,000 for the year, that seems very little even for budgeting although im sure it can be done, although id be looking at at least Eur 20,000 minimum, don't mind staying in hostels the odd time but im fcuked if i could do it for a whole year which is what she's doing i think!!

I would dearly love to travel the world even on my own, im not sure i could do it with some bird unless i was seeing her a long time, id do it tomorrow if i had the cash and had no bills  someday ill definitely do this though, has anyone on here done this before, and if so tell us about it.

I haven't travelled the world, but travelled Asia for six months last year. Best experience of my life and I would do it all again tomorrow if I could!

I went with my bf but i would go alone too. Infact one of my friends has just arrived in Australia as part of her 10month solo trip. You're never totally alone anyway, you meet so many other travellers on the way, it's such a great experience.

I'd say to anyone to save up and go travelling. I just want to see as much as I can in my life before I get old and can't travel anymore!

My next trip is in about 3 years - I'll be 28 - plan on taking two years out, six months in South America, six months in U.S, and six months in Canada, then working somewhere we like for the last six months... maybe New York? Who knows!

Oh and I also want to spend a year in Australia/New Zealand... but not quite sure how I'm going to do this at the moment, maybe plan it for my mid-thirties!

My mates did it when they left Uni - in fact they did it on very very little cash - but they just got work to keep them going and they loved it - they always said its the only way they would do it again, working ensured they got to meet some fabulous people, great places and ended up with some fantastic tales to come back with....:lol:

mmm....it's a strange one this. It's not something that massively appeals to me. I know this makes me sound sooooooo un cultured & risk adverse but that is not the case.

The good lady is a massive traveller, she has been to Inner Mongolia (3 weeks), Russia (2) and India (4) in the past nine months. Me? Ibiza X 2 & Barcelona in the same period. Also, most of my mates have done it in part.

Two things militate against for me, firstly having reached a reasonable standard of living, the idea of staying in hostels with dorms and cockroaches, is an utter no no no no no. So that means it becomes a very expensive venture. And secondly having mates come back & it appears all they have done is hang around with a load of brits in australia - i'm sure its stunning etc, but its not a massive journey of self discovery - more a trip to the pub in decent weather!

I just do not have the yearning. I will explore parts of the world that interest me as and when, however I have a mortgage, a job that I enjoy & pays me reasonably well & frankly just enjoy a question of sport to damn much!

So long as I can get over to Ibiza/eat at a decent restaurant in the UK/look at annas holiday pics, I am satisfied. 8)

I've thought in the past about taking a sabbatical and heading off travelling for a bit but this point you've made is one of my main concerns.

I'm quite laid back and not especially particular, but at this stage in my life I don't think I could handle anything less than a 3-star hotel (by European standards). That sets a certain minimum on your expenditures...

Plus there's no vast desire to whittle down the savings it's taken me so long to build up!

I'm content, for now, with seeing the world one bit at a time... a week, a weekend, a couple of weeks.... I spent some amount of time in 8 countries last year, 2 of which I hadn't been to before. If I can keep that pace up I should get to the remaining 170 countries by the time I die

Oh yeah Becki i actually remember you and your husband went away to Asia, if i recall correctly some people on here were saying you had some online blog or something, fair play to you anyway, your still reasonably young as well whereas age is against me but fcuk it as soon as i get my sh*t together financially even if that takes years im away unless i settle down with wife and kids but frankly i cant see that happening, and frankly i don't think ill bother either, but anyway im big into travellng myself, although with the amount of cash ive spent going to football matches id have traveled the world several time over:lol: but i don't regret that for a minute, but even this summer instead of doing Ibiza again i think ill head somewhere else for a change, hopefully outside Europe, and as much as i love Dubai but instead of going there Xmas 2008 i think i might go elsewhere as well but sure that's a log way away yet, Australia definitely apepals though as does NZ but i really wanna go to argentina and South America the most.

Ditto.

I admire Becky for doing the hardcore travelling, and would love that experience. But the time when i could do that has passed me by (for now).

I never had the opportunity to do it when i was younger as my priority was getting on the career ladder, and but hopefully i plan to do it later when i can afford (time wise) to take time off.

I still went abroad seven times to five countries last year though. (judith chalmers, here).

When i was in goa last year we booked a hotel but just jumped on a boat and slept on beaches - shacks, and tents for most of the time. The two weeks was long enough for me roughing it, i must confess.

Errr he's not my husband... don't wish my life away lol

The thing is you dont have to rough it when you travel. Some countries are soooooo cheap that you can get a nice clean room with air con, TV and even breakfast thrown in for about £8 a night.
I guess it does depend on age, I might not necessarily want to do the hardcore travelling stuff when I'm in my 30's, but that's why I'm doing some of it now.

To me, a career isnt important, you can get a career anytime in your life, some people start afresh when they're 40 and re-train in a different career. I wanted to make the most of my twenties, you're only young once, why waste that time working

Haha fair do's.

But i expect to retire when i'm about 40.

My friend is off next Sat for 6 months, we had her leaving party this weekend, shes going so many places I forget but the ones I did remember were Hong Kong, Thailand, Bali, Oz, Vietnam, Cambodia, New Zealand, then they end up in LA but like I said there was LOTS more.

I was actually rather jealous when we were talking about it on Sat.

Oh your not married sorry it must be someoene else on here i was thinking about.

I wouldn't have minded a high flying career a few years ago but all my cash went on either football or going to clubs and raves and getting wasted every weekend for years, and basically nothing else really mattered then, but sure im with you here you can have a career anytime and re-train at some point, etc, seen as i didn't get to do much travelling in my 20's (unless you count trips to Glasgow and the occasional jaunt to England for a rave, and the odd summer holiday here and there:oops::lol:) i feel ive missed out a little and im always thinking of where id like to travel, and i intend on doing it as well;)

 When do you go?
.
.
.
.
. I'll get the flags and bunting out...........;)!

Only joking Jonny me lad.

Got to admit I wish I'd done it a few years back but never shifted my arse and spent to much money on social activities.

I'm happy to visit relevant places of interest rather than do the whole travelling thing plus I have to many commitments now just to upsticks for a year.

Ah, but you make the mistake of thinking you have the most fun travelling when you're in your twenties. I find I have a lot better time now than I did 10 years ago!

Although, to be honest, it's probably down to having a lot more money to spend. Plus I'm lucky I have about as much stamina now as I did back then.

I think traveling is always worth it. I never regret going to different places

Even better if you can live and work overseas, and then use that place as a base to travel to other places.

I'm 30 now, and am thinking about doing a long-haul travel next year, hopefully to South America.

Done lots of traveling in Europe, a bit of the Middle East and north Africa...Australia, Asia and around N. America as well.

The longest time I ever traveled (with no working) was for about 5-6 months.

I've lived in England on and off, but because I'm there every year and lots of my family lives there I don't think of it as somewhere new and exciting.

I lived in Japan for 3 years and it was great for traveling to other parts of Asia. I did the Australia thing for a year too which was great.

I remember after living away from home for 4-5 years, I thought "I'm tired of this whole traveling thing. I want to go home and 'settle'. Well, that whole excitement of 'settling' lasted about 2 weeks. I think that is all really overrated. No one can ever take away your experiences, but your house can burn down, your car can be stolen.

Before my parents got married , my dad traveled for 2.5 years..I don't think I could ever travel for this long... but what an experience. Then about 8 months after my parents got married, someone burned down their house. Sure, they had some insurance to cover it, but the point is, 'stuff' can always be taken away from you. He lost thousands of photos, none of which could ever be replaced by any type of insurance policy either. No one can ever take away that 2.5 years of experience that my dad had.

I know some people who are totally happy to buy things and then buy more things... and of course its good to have a balance and have a bit of savings.

The funny thing is, its people my age, who are in their 30's, who seem to be obsessed with getting more money, getting better jobs, buying more things....but whenI talk to people my parents age, who are in their 60's and 70's, they are the ones telling me to travel more.

I know some people manage to do it all, have the nice house, have nice things, and the savings, AND still manage to travel here there and everywhere, but for most people you can't do that all at once. I also think its easier to buy houses and travel if you are in a couple rather than a single person.

I've been on a couple of Ibiza trips in the past couple of years, but thats it really. And, because I spent some time traveling and working overseas, if i had never done any of that, then I could have bought a place years ago and been better off financially.

However, what I'm regretting now, is not "Oh, I wish I had saved more" or "I wish i had a nice house" but "I wish I had traveled even more!"

I have never regretted traveling and working overseas. Not one bit. But I have regretted the things I haven't done and places I haven't been to.

Whoever dies with the most toys wins!

Valid points you made... although I think you can both accumulate stuff and travel... though perhaps I'm just lucky.

One thing I haven't done yet and want to do soon is home ownership. I don't think that would hinder travel, however, as I'd just replace rent with mortgage...

I've been living overseas for 11 years now. Wouldn't trade it for anything... the things I've seen! I guess after 6 years I don't see Moscow as travelling anymore, but it puts me a lot closer to other places I want to see than I would be back home.

I think you can accumlate stuff and go on holidays, but its not feasible for most people to travel for months on end without going without something else. so yeah i think you are lucky. Maybe lucky is not the right word, as I'm sure you've worked hard at what you do, but for most people its one or the other. Most people who own property and have 3 cars and have lots of things can't take off to South America for 8 months.

Most people I know who have traveled for long periods of time, like 8 months or so, do not own property, or even moved back in with family for a short period of time to save so they could go.

As you know, from living overseas, there is a big difference between going on holiday somewhere and actually living somewhere. The experiences are vastly different.

Thats why I think anyone considering going overseas for along period of time should look at work or volunteer opportunities. You learn so much more about the country thay way.

i think if you can replace rent with mortgage, its a great idea... it used to be possible here, but for me, if I were to buy what i rent, i would be spending 5 times as much, which just isn't feasible right now.
