Top Tunes - Help Required.!

I'm a local DJ who for the past year or two has solely focussed on Hard Trance and Hard House, but as my musical taste is widening and I am starting to age slightly (at the ripe age of 21!) i'm starting to listen to more Funky House/Progressive House/Tribal House and breakbeats. I love Female Vocals and catchy Vocal Loops.

I think what has made me listen to House more was on my second visit to Ibiza when I was chilling on the beach with a fat spliff..I was just listening to the Funky tunes belting out of the beach bars and loving every minute. During that holiday I went to the record store (right in the centre of San Antonio - Opposite KFC) and brought about 10 tunes - funky house - which I had never done before.

Anyway I have just brought my new decks (numark TTX-1s) and am starting to get out of my bedroom (pubs and parties - hey, we have to start somewhere!) Anyway Has anyone got any suggestions of some tunes I should pick up and listen to on my next visit to a record store? I will write them down and give them a listen. I'm really clued up on Hard House and Trance but as I said I'm trying to branch more into House - Progressive House. I'd like to have a set of banging tunes which start off with a housey vibe and slowly break into a trance set and get harder as the set progresses.

I will be thankful for any suggestions and could even write back when i've listened to them with either a smile...or a thumbs down.!

Cheers ;)

Check out sets from Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler, Deep Dish, Erick Morillo, Low End Specialists, John Digweed and Danny Howells. The track listings on their albums should help you find some funky, progressive house.

yeah would agree with bbc. if i were you id listen to some certain dj's cd's first of all as bbc lists above. agree with all of the above but just to add a few id say timo mass, sasha, sander klienenberg, darren emerson, roger sanchez and perhaps even some jon carter, slam, yousef, lottie, tim deluxe and many more. maybe if you'd prefer you could check out mix compilations such as subliminal or underwater or would highly recommend any global underground by some of the masters mentioned above. would name loadsa tracks for ya but am really terrible with remembering names. this probably doesnt help at all but good luck anyway. :D

search the internet for tunes, maybe try the record labels webite, i.e. subliminalrecords.com or underwater records, try out JUNO as well.....happy hunting, maybe see you playing some house in some ibiza bars this season heheheh!!!!

I only put this on twenty minutes ago and have had two replies already. good stuff. Any advice is of help cheers. I will get listening to some of those compilations, I think it could be money well spent.

I saw Timo Mass at Tribal Gathering in Sanky Soaps, Manchester, a few weeks back and I liked a lot of his tunes, funky with a very hard bass-line. Different than what he has released commercially. I thought the same when I saw Mauro Picotto in Cream though, all the tunes he has released (komodo, it's like this/it's like that/Verdi) were all pretty catchy tunes but I didn't recognise one of the tunes he played at Cream, I wasn't overly impressed with him to be honest.

Also, what DJ would you suggest me to go and see live? I'm after going to see them for the music and the vibe but to also listen and learn. I would like to see someone who isn't frightened to mess around with the tunes, and throw some vocal samples and loops in here and there, and plays mad mixes of well known tunes. Not Judge Jools who mixes in 16 bars and when the next tune comes on that's it, job done.! I'm trying to get clued up as for the past two years have been going to Hard Trance clubs and am starting to realise how fun and funky house tunes can be to mix in.

Thanks anyway and more replies welcome.!!

:)

Does any trance dj do this hmmmm!!! i knew the subliminla like to muck around with the technical equipment (morrillo, harry choo choo romero, jose nunez),

i would say go and see guy ornadel for some trance stuff, obviously pvd, tiesto etc....

Danny Tenaglia - the man is very adventurous but you would need to go to NYC.

Any of those listed would be good in my opionion. Digweed was doing some funky mixes when I saw him last.

Next time you are in Manchester check out either of the Frater brothers, they are class acts and are destined for bigger things. You can catch them at either Venus, at Club V on or Strictly Funky at Tiger, Tiger. In fact most of the DJ's in those two venues will not disappoint. I've listened to Diggers since the early Mastercut releases and he is much different then to what you would here on the Global Underground Cd's nowadays. It's a question of taste and mood in my opinion when deciding which to listen to. Whilst over in Ibiza lasy year, I managed to pick up the El Divino CD 2002 and for me, it sums up probably everything what you are looking for....I'd give that a go.

Nice one, cheers :D . I live in North Wales so every fortnight I travel to Liverpool or Manchester to go to a deecent club. My mate is in Uni in Manchester and I have heard him talk about Tiger, Tiger. I went to Ascention in Manchester on Boxing Day night and it was a class club, could put Manchester back on the scene, especially now Liverpool's super-clubs are dying out. :!:

Been to Ibiza twice but never managed to get to El Divino ... I'm embarresed to say i've been twice but never managed to get to Space either...I had tickets for the after party for the Manumission show...But when we got out of Manumission at 7am - feeling slightly less energetic than earlier in the evening and counting the number of small lizards we could find...we thought best go back to the hotel to chill out! :!:

thanks every1 for ur replies. later..

thanks for that, it's a good review and you're right, it outlines all of what I said I was looking for. Am gonna try see if I can get a live recording of his, any ideas where I can find this? Will have to go and see the man in Ibiza 2003.

Is anyone else starting to think about Ibiza 2003? Have started regularly visiting the Ibiza Spotlight web pages and am starting to get excited about this summer already. roll on ibiza 2003. :p

started to think about ibiza?? i started to think about this summer, when i got back from my last trip.....

yeah but it's depressing knowing there is a year to pass until you visit the magical island again (unless of course you are lucky enough to go more than once a year!)

I can cope when I know there is only 6 months to go.! (just)

Anyone else going end of June, beginning of July?

Would be good to hear from ya, I'm sitting at my desk in work and looking for ways to pass the time (my 'in' tray is empty before anyone says I should get on with my work!!)

see ya later.

Yeh, I'm definitely going on the first week of July. My last trip dates back in September 2001. I haven't booked yet because my wife hasn't made up her mind yet. She's now 3 months pregnant and afraid to go to Ibiza without being able to drink and move like crazy. I'm seriously considering going there, however, ther's still some hard work to do with Nataly (my wife). If I don't go this year i'll go crazy
Worst case senario I go alone

good luck with the misses then! reckon you could have a tough job on your hands though in convincing her!

I reckon I would go on my own if it came down to it. Beginning of the year about 8 people are like 'yeah we are up for it this year, definitely' but it always boils down to me and Alex jetting off. He was ill in bed for 2 days last year (reckons he ate a dodgy sausage :?: thought this sounded a little perculiar!) and I went out on my own for two nights and had two of the best nights i've had out.

I would seriously consider selling my gran if it meant that I could be sitting on the rocks outside Cafe Del Mar, in the middle of July, with a nice big Joint, listening to a dj spin 'Happy People', with a large cocktail and with a few bikini clad beach babes by my side - but, no - i'm at my desk in dismal Wales with a jumper and coat on and sitting next to a heater :(

(approx) 156 days to go ! ! !

JoeDrawb, this is really motivating! my job convincing my wife should be a bit easier ;)

Yeah JoeDrawb, i've heard that one before! I gonna have 11 of the best nights by meself! :D I wouldn't never wait around, my friends can never get there shit together. I'm used to travelling alone and I get to do everything i want when i want. I mean, to experience the clubbing paradise of ibiza is something i have to go and do because i have always wanted to do it. I'm sure i will make new friends there and how special is that to meet up with the friends you've made in Ibiza every summer?!!! ;) 8) :p
