TOP 100 Clubs

what really determines whether a club is great?

the club on a technical level - state of the art mirrorballs blah blah

or

the club on an emotional level - did you actually have a good time?

In the top 20, I've been to 5 of the clubs.
And indeed, it is only down to who voted, its completely a popularity contest, just as the DJ Top 100 is. It does leave out the little clubs who don't have many people who go to it, but then, that kind of a public voting system would never work for the smaller clubs. They just don't have the fan base the places like Space or MoS do.

I'm still always curious to see what the popular opinion is on these places.
I went to Sankeys last year to try it out because it was number one. I wouldn't of gone otherwise. New venue, new experience, and I enjoyed it.
As I shall now check out a venue like Digital in Newcastle, venues I wouldn't normally go to due to distance, etc or cost. If a large group of people seem to say it's good for it's price, rather than only a handful, maybe it is worth checking out.

Olly: Your entitled to your opinion on it being just one of the two, but I love a good light and sound production just as much as the DJ on. If I could, I would go in to lighting production at clubs, but sadly I've never had the chance. It's something that amazes me, from being a VJ, to firing off strobes at precise intervals to bringing a laser on at exactly the right moment, in the right pattern.

it's the emotional level.

100% perfect sound, light, design, acoustics, etc is worthless without the emotional level.

old space terrace and dc10 are perfect examples of why.

Sorry to say most light shows are done by computer now.

I agree without the people into it, the club will seem hollow.

Yeah fu(k this industry bollox.

It's all about the unlicensed venues and squats.

Please don't tell anyone I like the Ministry after I said that.

...is Space actually any good these days though - I thought it was waaaaay past its best or is it having another renaissance?

there was a club somewhere in the middle of nowhere that used to put on hard house nights and a colleague of mine went a fair bit. She said on quiet nights the club would fill the room with inflatable dancing men to make it look busier

Based on overall experiences Space wins for me but Pacha (ibiza) not far behind. Sankeys is best club I have been to in UK unless you count the small clubs I go to in Bristol where because of the people I have had unbelievable nights!

It is the emotional connection for sure. Also the actual artists/acts that they manage to put on should be a barometer of a club. Or maybe that should be a barometer of the promoters of the night rather than the club (ie building and contents)?! Anyway, whatever, emotions is the key

You need the base emotional level, I don't argue that.

But well placed lighting effects can highten the emotional level far beyond what would normally be possible. (e.g. when pyro, or a confetti cannon, goes off).

The lighting effects won't work if there is no atmosphere in a club, no emotional connection.

Most lighting in the clubs I go to, while the patterns are stored in a computer, are still physically changed by a human being. In fact, out of all the bigger clubs I've been do, I can't think of a single one that doesn't have a lighting jock.

Enjoyed Sankeys a couple of years ago for the b'day bash but no.1 in the world would be stretching it a tad.

Based on the very small x section of people on here who have been to Berghain, everyone seems to describe it as the best clubbing experience they have had.

I went last summer - apart from the premier etage area where balearic mike was playing lovely tunes at levels you could barely hear, it was way too hectic for me. Wasn't sure about the shop either [a shop in a club -what is that all about?] In fairness though, we were pretty wiped out after a long day at the beach and the ashram and by this point running low on ammo - never did get to see dezza may in the end

Sankeys isn't even the best club in the North West! In my opinion of course.

I have been to 8 of the top 20. Zouk in Singapore was good. They have a MOS also but it is always packed to the gills. I don't enjoy a club so packed all you can do is stand around.
