The EES/ETIAS experience thread!

Mmm...took about half hour for us, but there was lots of people having problems and ours was only flight of largely UK passengers there. I'd imagine more flights at the same time would be chaos. The two workers directly people were clearly very stressed and being very rude and unwelcoming. All things considered, you can't blame them!
If you are on a different passport than wife/kids, are you separated in any way or can you go through the gate/s together?

I was first through as used my "by door opposite the driver" on the bus from plane to be first through the queue.

Daughter and her friend were on second bus so behind people and were still through shortly after us.

Because we registered in December in Madrid we scanned our passport on the EES machines and then no fingerprints, just said to go to eGates. Expect any delays to reduce over time as less people scan for the first time.

Still had passport stamped though so the old and new process still seemingly in place.

Of course going back out is where I think Tenerife has issues sometimes so will report back after return flight Monday.

Well the "queue of shame" at the top of the escalators wasn't open so no exit stamp coming out. 5 minutes through security but still early season. Maybe something more at the gate but time for a Cruzcampo.

Think it is hit and miss to what is / isn't rolled out and to what extent. At least that's the impression from Madrid, Alicante & Ibiza the last three months or so.

Update : eGate exit scan at gate 15 took a fair few tries. Into the same area as Edinburgh flight. And still then needed the physical stamp anyway.

Whilst a little confusing for us wasn't too painful somehow and hoping they can learn from early season blips...

Missus and boy 1 (13) finger printed and photo'd at secondary gate at Tenerife. Not much hassle but again wasn't busy and we didn't wait for them to announce gate as I knew it would be area C. If you waited for the gate to be announced an hour before, could be a bit hairy.

Same thing at Malaga (AGP) the flights going back to the UK need the EES protocols and will, almost certainly, go from B or C after passport control, so make your way there before the actual gate is announced. There are cafes/toilets etc there too, so no issues.

Always a 0.1% risk that your flight might go from another area, but I've never known that to happen.

IBZ is different though - there are no separate terminals and passport could be done in two places, either before security or as you leave the gate still?

We had the exit stamp at the gate and would have preferred the normal booth.

My assumption was it would all be eGates in and out and no stamp once it all is transitioned. Hopefully before the summer.

We had gate 15 to Bristol and Edinburgh was gate 16 at the same time. So they held us for a bit but then let us through the eGates while Edinburgh were still waiting post eGate. Then once through the eGate they pointed us to the small stamping booth to the right then we joined a queue next to the Edinburgh flight on the left.

eGate didn't work about 3 times, then said ineligible another couple, then a few more didn't work before a final green light let me through.

All the fun of Ibiza airport though.

Think that the EES should only be used when it's available for everyone, and not just this ad-hock introduction. Top tip I read, if you have changed your passport due to expiry, take the old one with you as well as it has all your previous stamps in case of questioning.

Eventually EES will make that unnecessary, but pigs will fly first.

This whole thing is stressing me out and I’ve got 2 months yet before we come!!
We are on UK passport, but live in the US. Flying Miami to Madrid, then flight to Ibiza is 3 hours later.
Does anyone know if this means we will have to do the EES three times ? ie landing in Madrid, collecting bags and checking back in for Ibiza flight, and then landing in Ibiza again.

I’ve read you can register on an app first, but also that this still means you join the same queue as everyone else.

Thanks all

national flights within spain don't go through passport control.
Correct - but it's better than that, once you arrive at a Schengen-zone airport and complete the EES, you can fly to any EU/EEA airport (excluding Ireland and poss Cyprus(?)) and have zero immigration to face - treat it as all domestic travel!

From the US to Madrid with connection; AI writes this;
  • Self-Transfer (Separate Flights): You must clear immigration, collect baggage, re-check, and clear security again, needing at least 3 hours.
  • Terminal 4 Layout: T4S handles non-Schengen (UK) flights, while T4 handles Schengen (domestic/EU) flights. A mandatory underground train connects them.
  1. Transfer: Follow signs for "Connections" and take the underground automated shuttle train from T4S to T4.
  2. Security/Baggage: If on separate tickets, you must exit to the arrivals hall to collect bags and re-check in. If on one ticket, you can usually proceed directly to your next gate.
  3. Departures: Proceed to your next gate, likely in T4, which handles most domestic and Schengen flights.
    IBERIA +3
