the consell insular wants to eradicate drugs

an easy way is to use the power of mathematics.

13 week clubbing season * capacity of the clubs = number of clubbers (400,000ish)

visitors to ibiza 2m ish

therefore 80% are not clubbers.

obviously it's a body count. as i understand it the international recreational drug traders don't yet file p&l accounts with the tax authorities.

That’s not the right way to do calculations about the percentage of clubbers from all the tourism that comes to Ibiza IMO. How do you define a clubber anyway? If you go by the people who enter the clubs then yeah, I’m sure these calculations are about right but it’s not that simple. It is the scenery these clubs are creating from their part that keeps people coming to the island again and again with pre-parties/after-parties, among countless bars with excellent vibe and music (in many cases similar and sometimes as good as or even better than in the clubs). You don’t have to go to a single club in Ibiza to enjoy fantastic electronic music with likeminded people and have a brilliant “clubbing” experience. That is the best part of it to be honest, for me at least. I go to the clubs because I like to and can afford it, but I have had some of the best times of my life in Ibiza at the beach for example, with friends and making new friends with all those people that share the same intrest in clubbing and electronic music as I do myself, while dancing or just listening to the beats.

I don’t mean to say that all that come to Ibiza are clubbers, but I would still dare to say that a considerably bigger part that just 20% are clubbers and people that are interested in clubbing and enjoy the clubbing scenery with the brilliant electronic music that’s so special to Ibiza.

It’s not that bad for them to take action against drugs in Ibiza though, as drugs are or at least have been so easy to get, that too many with little experience has had the thing got out of hands. And I must admit, that even though I have nothing against people that do drugs, there was a time that it was getting pretty annoying with all those trying to sell them in clubs etc. I once counted 9 times they offered drugs to me in one single night lol, but then last summer it happened only once or twice on the whole trip that was for about one week... To take action against drugs is fine by me to an extent, but restrictions about party times and music volume is no good for the Island IMO.

such a shame and a waste of a life,butt....end of the day everyine thats taking drugs know the risks involved.Still such a sad waste of a life tho.

Sad thing is it won't even put anyone off taking drugs over there. People will still be running about pilled off their heads and scoring drugs down the west end- but hey- they choose their own paths...

Because, of course no one takes drugs anywhere else on the island....

I have to say, I am consistently surprised by the ability of people to repeat the mistakes of others, despite having the opportunity to learn from other mistakes, without having to make them.

Consistently throughout history, "no tolerance" policies or very harsh policies regarding behavior that is as elective, or as habitual as drug use has proven to be almost completely in-effective. All you have to do to see the catastrophic failure of this fact is observe the progression of the United States "war on drugs". Now I am by no means a left wing, liberal who wants to see people allowed to do whatever they want whenever they want, far from it. I do, however, want to see the efforts that are put forward, done in a fashion that elicits real results and minimizes waste, even if those results are not always the pinnacle of what you had intended.

Universally, harm reduction programs have been much more effective at both reducing the amount of narcotics consumed as well as limiting the amount of resources that need to be allocated in order to combat the problem. Harm reduction often leads to behavior modification due to drug users learning that "someone cares about them". Once people discover that someone else cares about them, they change their behavior in order to care about themselves, not to mention due to harm reduction, there are less instances of death or serious injury due to proper information or environments or circumstances that limit the possibility to overdose or get heat stroke, or physically injure yourself.

By harm reduction, I am talking about changing the laws and the requirements of clubs and the public service to encourage safe behavior. First on my list would be cheap water and free re-entry. I know the clubs would hate it, and as a capitalist, and a very adamant one at that, i would hate it too, but it would drastically reduce the incidents of eat stroke due to ecstasy. Access to cooler temperatures and inexpensive water are small concessions for clubs to make. Yes they will need more security to do the re-entry searches, yes they will make less on the water sales, but the lack of harm to their patrons (which they SHOULD be concerned about) as well as the increase in sales volume promoted by good faith would minimize the cost in my eyes.

Al this being said, I do however, think that most people who use drugs on the island are "recreational users" who are not addicts, have common sense, and do not create the problems brought to a vicious media front by the careless few. I for example have taken drugs in an Ibiza club, but when I did, i allocated the right amount of money for re-hydration, took breaks to sooth the heat, and tested the product for harmful contaminants before consuming them (although this process is still not 100%, but as most users do, you do a risk reward calculation.

So am I the kind of person that the authorities want to stop from coming to the island? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I am self employed, successful by my own definitions, and by many others as well, and spend more than a reasonable amount on my vacations. I guess by some standard I am part of the problem, but for god sake all it takes is a few nights out around the globe to know that Ibiza is not in some sort of drug crisis, i see it EVERYWHERE, and if you help inform people, you save yourself, time, money, effort, and you even save face, for when this DOESN'T work, and you are left accounting to the public why you spent their money, and all you did was lower the income of the island, piss off the largest businesses and largest economic contributors and generally look foolish for trying to put an ultimatum on the public sphere.

As someone said earlier "The people will always get what the people want, at whatever cost". It's the free market and it rules the world, even the underground ones no one wants to talk about.

Cheers.

There was a great story in the Diario de Ibiza today illustrating that drugs are NOT legal here in Ibiza.
7 irish holiday makers had decided to buy some extacsy pills - they originally wanted 20 but their “dealer” made them offer they couldn’t refuse: buy 100 and they’ll only be 2.50 euro each.. so they bought them. They then went off to a well known club in Playa d’en Bossa.
On entering the club, the doormen asked the usual “do you have any or are carrying any drugs” ? Believing that the doorman was being nice or offering to sell them drugs or simply being idiots, the woman proceeded to take out a bag of a 100 pills from her bra and show him that they did have drugs - “no its ok, we’ve got our own” - cue phone to the guardi civil and them being nicked and bailed to the tune of 4000 euros…. ejits
Contrary to popular opinion - drugs are not legal in Ibiza

yep - its laughable....

Saturday August 09 2008

AN IRISH woman was caught trying to sneak 100 ecstasy tablets into an Ibiza nightclub
in her bra and has now ended up behind bars.

The 23-year-old tourist was on her way into the Space nightclub
with seven of her friends when the drugs were discovered.

The doorman asked the woman if she was carrying any drugs and to his surprise
she pulled a bag of pills out of her bra.
The bouncer then confiscated the tablets and called the Civil Guard.

It is understood that the woman was stunned by this because she claimed that
she didn't know it was a serious crime to carry drugs on the party island.

"She's obviously not the sharpest tool in the box,"

a police source said.

"The doorman asked her if she was carrying any drugs
and she simply put her hand inside her bra and pulled out a big bag of pills."
"The bouncer couldn't quite believe it."
"The girl claimed she did not know it was a serious crime to carry drugs in Ibiza."

The woman is now facing a possible penalty of up to nine years in prison
if found guilty of dealing drugs.
