how risky would turning up late december be?
without any prebooked accommodation?

mate ive just got back from a round the world trip and was in thailand for 6 weeks...
well, i stayed in koh samui for 6 weeks anyway!
managed to take in one of the full moon parties and they are cracking

youll have no worries accomadation wise. obviously round full moon its busier, but if you cannot find anywhere on koh phangan then just stay in samui. you're going to have to fly into samui anyway, and only 10-30 mins on the speedboats that run all day and night round full moon time.

id recommend spending some time in samui anyway, its an awesome place and the mint bar is a good place! (cheers for the link!)

so dont worry about accomadation, you'll find somewhere easily.
And if you are in samui, then stay at als hut (http://www.samui-hotels.com/alshutsamui/) its cool, satellite tv, everything you need, in the middle of chaweng, and about 9 quid a night.

THere you go!

Does Koh Tao have any FM parties?

Bf and I will be on Samui from the 11th to the 13th and have been contemplating whether to go to Phangan or Tao then. FM this month is on the 16th.

Also, is Chaweng the only club and bar area on Samui or does the northern beach area (near where the speedboats leave for Phangan and Tao) have any nightlife? That's where our hotel for thefirst 2 nights is, apparently some bungalows on Samui have suffered from the recent flood.

hey mimiko

Full Moon parties are held on Koh Phangnan, not on koh tao or samui...

as for nightlife.

Chaweng is the busiest place for going out. Be prepared though, its not ibiza. you're sure to have a great time, but just dont expect anything spectacular.
Not sure what music you're into, but for house go to the mint bar, and then to Solo later perhaps, they play some alright stuff.
The Gecko resort is also really good, and looks good for new years this year.
Thats where id go. Sorry, dont have a link, but its geckosamui.com or something, check that out.

Theres also Lamai which is about 5-10 miles from Chaweng and thats quite populated, although when i was there it was dead. Have heard reports its ok though, mainly the german crowd in Lamai.

fraid i dont know about the floods, your best bet is to email them.

youll have a great time. you dont know how jealous i am!

:)

Parties are actually held on all three islands.

From a tourist perspective, the main one on Phangan has to be seen but do what I did - go to Guy's bar on Haad Thien for the midnight bit (or Gecko on Samui because it's going to be the best thing this year), then charter a long boat to the main event for sunrise...all the tw*ts will have gone home by then.

...and you'll want the energy to carry on at Back Yard cos it's amazing!

In terms of beach parties, the best ones take place on Rocky Bay in Samui. It's a beautiful setting and they're really well organised.

...Oh and avoid Chaweng like the plague - I'd rather go to Blackpool! At least you're under no false illusions there!

If staying on Samui, go for Bo Phut on the North end of the island - it's where Gecko is.
...and if you do go to Danny R's farewell gig on NYE then please don't tell me how good it was.

;)

Hi all,

thank you for the answers. As it is Robder we had already reserved a couple of nights accommodation on Bo Phut, what a lucky coincidence.

And no, we won't see Danny R's NYE gig because by then we'll be back in snowy Helsinki via Laos and Bangkok 8)
