Thailand (Koh Phangan) - fao who's been

I'm looking for places to stay in Koh Phangan. Robder recommended The Sanctuary to me which seemed exactly what I wanted, however Tom and the other 2 carnivores going don't want to spend their holidays eating rabbit food with lots of hippies (their words   ).

I'm going mad looking at endless places on the internet so if anyone has any personal recommendations please let me know.

I don't want to be surrounded by lots of smelly backpackers and I want a few home comforts......but also close enough to the action for nights out so not completely remote.

That's about it  Thanks

I stayed in a bungalow on hat yao which was lovely - but no air con or anything like that. Only £1 a night though!! It's about 20 min taxi to hat rin which is where the full moon party is/most of the night life.

Can't really think of anything more expensive, it's not as developed as Ko Samui really.

You must be joking - no air con and £1 a night, imagine the smelly toerags that will attract

There's lots of fancier places I've found online for the more mature clientelle  but I just wondered if anyone had any personal recommendations rather than just opting for one blind.

But I'm old and I NEED my home comforts  I don't want some poncey type place but I don't want some cheapo place surrounded by Australian backpackers on the pi$$ - I just want something in the middle :? I loved The Sanctuary that Rob suggested cos it fitted the bill perfectly.

It's for the end of the year/New Year.

ooh we'll be there at the same time then - I'm planning on spending a couple of weeks over xmas/ny on koh phangan :p at the end of my travels.

Shall see you in back yard no doubt

 Bloody hell, you can't even escape to Thailand without me popping up  ;)

I've been..... but you can still find many places that are cheap... but not the backpacker type of places... There are the cruddy, smelly backpacker places like you suggested... but for only a tiny bit more you can get some lovely places.

I've never booked ahead of time ( in fact I think Ibiza is the only place i've done it!) I just get there and then look around because what if I change my mind, want to stay longer in a certain place, shorter, want to switch hotels.....

How long are you going for?

I honestly think you're mad not going to the Sanctuary! It's the best place to get comforts close to all the main action...and with such a chilled crowd - worlds away from all the backpacker scum.

North of the island is lovely but you get the same divides really.

...and the hippy types are VERY funny to watch.

The Sanctuary is just one restaurant in the area (the spa is GORGEOUS)...there are loads more on the surrounding beaches like Haad Yuan and *oops forgotten the name it's been years*

It's only for a couple of weeks holiday - I LIKE and NEED to plan tho

You don't need to sell it to me - I think it looks amazing :D Tom and the other carnivores think it's going to be all rabbit food and lentils and hippy chanting

ok... then I might even book if its for a couple of weeks!:)

you know.. until I read that properly I thought you said, "Tom and the other 2 carnivores going don't want to spend their holidays eating rabbits"

and I thought..."I don't remember eating rabbits in Thailand!"

I never stayed there, but I had a look on the website of the one Robder suggested and it looks lovely!

At the risk of sounding like a traveller snob :

The full moon party is awful...it's the stuff around it that's good and the boats that go to and from the fmp from samui are full of exactly the sort of australian back packers and rowdy students you're trying to avoid.

Also, Samui is full of billboards, big businesses and touristy nature reserves. ;)

Phangan is so rocky and hilly that no roads can be built between resorts - it's often necessary to travel to and from other places by long boat.

I think staying somewhere too far from the Sanctuary would be like sending an Ibiza virgin to Benhirras.

Benhirras is gorgeous but not close enough to the action really. If you were travelling for a long period I'd say chill on the Northern beaches, meet the locals and soak it all up but you haven't got the luxury of being able to find your own way in two weeks.

(It's all about Back Yard and Guy's Bar really and you DON'T want to stay in Haad Rin.)

rabbit food

It's just the Sanctuary that's got the rabbity menu () - but you'll love it - the food is yummy.

It's Thailand so everywhere else will serve traditional Thai cuisine...tell Tom he won't find steak, chips and peas anywhere no matter how hard he tries...well, unless he goes to Haad Rin and watches football with all the 'urgh' types.
