Thailand (Koh Phangan) - foa who's been

i stayed in thailand for a couple of months in 2005. was a great time, probably the best place i visited when i was travelling...

I stayed in Samui... Chaweng to be exact... Sure, everyone is saying its full of billboards, starbucks etc. Which is true, but its a great place to base your visits to Phangnan and Koh Tao.

Personally, it was perfect for me, cos i wanted those oh so bad traveller types everyone here seems to hate! Im a 20 something bloke and its gonna be boring otherwise!!

Barbie, if i were you, do not even entertain the idea of booking somewhere before you arrive. Get a flight into Samui, and stay for two nights at a place you'll like, theres resorts all over the place that'll suit you... you're bound to find a 5 star hotel...! Samui's probably the best place to base your exploring cos its the most connected, so go there, and go to a travel agent that can hook you up a week or so around Full Moon time, and also see if you can spend a few nights in Koh Tao...

While you're in that part of the world you might aswell see as much as you can hey...

Price wise... to give you an idea, i stayed in a 3 star hotel for 6 quid a night. It was perfect for me, sky tv, air con, big double beds, and about 15 foot from a white sand beach.

You'll have an amazing time.

Also check out Gecko when you get to Samui (if you go there), its where Danny Rampling did his last ever night the other year. Mint Bar in chaweng also attracts the house set. I saw Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw there some time ago...

Hope you have a good one!

Thanks again - very helpful :D But re booking - surely you would book in advance at a busy time like New Year :? I am Little Miss Organised - I think I would have heart palpitations going somewhere and not having accomodation booked

Hey B,

No, seriously, there really is no need to book. You could perhaps book something in Samui for when you are due to arrive, for maybe a night or two, that way you dont have to worry about finding somewhere when you arrive.

But personally, i wouldnt bother. There's so many places to stay in and around that part of Thailand, that by booking over here, you'll be paying through the nose, just for the sake of it.

And its exciting finding somewhere when you arrive, it means youhave to explore!!
take the plunge, and dont worry, there'll be **** loads of accomadation! : )

well babs i know hoe u feel, id like the same thing for late sept. but lets face it, it aint gonna happen he he:) - im probably just going to arrive and go wtih the flow.

If she wants to stay in one of the cool resorts on Koh Phangan, its a MUST to book, especially round newyear. Even hippie hang outs like Sanctuary will be full. Plus staying on Samui, I dont recommand. Its a beautiful island, despite the developments but its the sort of tourist there you dont want to hang out with. Its the place for footieshirt wearing english beerboys, bikers, and old perv men. To compare with Ibiza, Samui is the San Antonio with its Westend, where Phangan more compares with Playa Den Bossa 8)

Sorry mate, but that is complete and utter pretentious rubbish.

You are slandering the whole island community there cos of perhaps half a % of people that are there.

Like i mentioned earlier, i was in thailand for two months, mainly in Samui, and i did not come across a single english "beerboy", "footie shirt" or "biker"(?)
In fact, the people i met there were mainly people travelling alone and stopping through and i met some of the nicest people ive ever met there, far from your description of lagerlouts.

Anyway - B, like this Belgian person says, you may wanna look into pre booking, but i dont reckon its worth it - still, its your money!!!

have a great time, and dont listen to these pre-conceived ideas about Samui. Its got a starbucks and a pizza hut, so people tend to think its not as "remote" as they like... But then if you want remote, go Borneo!

Have a good one!

Thank you, I will probably book just for my own sanity   But have taken on board what you said Samui and we will spend some time there, thanks again ;)

Hey Toms, I dont want this to end up in a yes-no competition but to say you didnt come across one lagerlout in 2 months I find highly remarkable. The two main tourists resorts on Samui are Lamai and Chaweng. Bophut, the fishermans village, is more of a tranquil place catering for couples and elderie, no pun intended as I like this area. Lamai altough a beautiful rather unspoiled beach (unlike the full of beachchairs umbrelleas etc of Chaweng) is full of girly bars, hard to find a decent place without facing the typical falang hanging out with thai girls and thats a fact. Chaweng is more diverse, has a fair amount of quality restaurants, cool cafes but the party scene is right in the middle of the girly bar area (Green Mango, even Mint) thats also a fact. So what kinda men visit these bars? Backpackers, people travelling alone? I think not. Wandering around in this area after sunset its pretty obvious whats going on there. I dont need to elaborate I hope. But you are right that I might have overgeneralized a bit, there is ofcourse decent travellers on Samui (like there are in San Antonio) but my point remains. Besides, I wasnt talking about remote, or authenique or whatever, its just the type of traveller I was talking about. I been to the Thai islands a dozen of times and every time I been on Samui it got even worse, including fights between groups of Brittish thugs. But I guess we all got our own perception so lets Barbie decide for herself.
Cheers

Cocohut attracts a bit of an older crowd(mostly Israelis)

...and some from Sweden. My bf and I stayed at the Cocohut around the full moon in December 05 and liked the place -- not too fancy but nice anyhow. There are both bungalows and hostel types of rooms with shared bathrooms.

Even those turned out to be a luxury, because that month's fmp was cancelled because of too big waves so a lot of the action took place at the Back Yard (next to Cocohut). The toilets there were the most horrible in the world so it truly was a luxury to be able to use Cocohut's shared ones :D

Thank you that's very useful to know  ;)

I think we are favouring one of the beach front bungalows at Cocohut so good to have more opinions, thanks :D

I visited Koh Pha Ngan a few times last year, each staying in a different place. First time I stayed on the west of the island, it's away from the main action but still a nice atmosphere in the area. I have stayed on Haad rin, which is horrible especially around full-moon time. although there were mirrors on all walls of the room which made for some interested times. :p

I stayed on Tong Nai Pan, which is north-east, lovely part of the island, there are some resorts up on the beaches around there, and even the cheaper places seemed really nice. Probably the best beaches up there, and again a really nice atmosphere.

I also stayed on a beach about 3 miles from Haad rin at a place called Mac Bay, lovely people and a very quiet beach area.

Granted all the places I stayed were the cheapest in the area's but I did see what was to offer in most areas. I'd probably recommend the North-Eastern beaches for a quiet but fun atmostphere. You will find grubby travellers everywhere on the island, considering it is where the full-moon parties are held, just as you will find football hooligan British types everywhere on Ibiza..... just more concentrated in certain areas

thats were i stayed
its a good choice
and when you realise how ****ing out of the way you are ... you will be absolutely delighted you got the aircon and flushing toilets
well worth it
beware of full moon party
it becomes really menacing around that time
even though thats what i went for it was really horrible
thrills and spills.... can be found on the east of the island where you can only get by boat
IMHO thats were you want to be on full moon night and prolly new years eve n all

Hey Barbs,

What did you end up picking? My girlfriend shot down The Sanctuary, as well. She took one look at the website and said, "Snardy, this is supposed to be a relaxing vacation. I don't want to camp in the jungle with the bugs and lizards."

Wimps!

So I need to find us a nice romantic place, somewhat secluded. Not shabby, but not too expensive (i.e. USD $150/night or less)

We have gone for Coco Huts as they seemed to tick all the boxes for things we wanted.
