Tell us how it was - Ibiza 2024

Dates you were there: 31st aug - 4th sept

Where you stayed: Ryan’s Lola’s in San A Bay. Decent hotel

Club nights visited:
Saturday
Ants Ushuaia
Pikes house party

Sunday
Solomon +1

Monday
Circoloco

Best night: so close between pikes or Solomon + 1 with Chloe caillet, but I’m going with Solomon. I’ll do a more in depth review eventually. I was apprehensive of this night. I was very wrong. Stayed till the lights came on and somehow was also blessed with hardly any taxi queue ! Always a bonus!

Worst night: I would have said ants at Ushuaia, but nic fanciulli did do a good set, and pikes after saved the night. Worst night overall would be circo. I’m not sure why I done either to be honest, just attending nights for the sake of it. Sad as I used to love a circo loco turnout, first time I’ve been in about 6 years though, I can’t remember it ever being that busy, or maybe I’m just getting old? Not sure.

Best bar: we didn’t go to many this trip / not massive drinkers, I would say best drinks we had golden Buddha

Best place to eat: la torreta - finally got to try it. Superb food, partner also said the cocktails were great!

Best beach and/or beach club: only beach we went to was Cala conta for sunset ashram.

Money spent: all in I think around 2k for 4 days, partner about the same.

Biggest regret: going to ants and circo and not just going to a nice restaurant or bar instead

Going back?: yes in 3 weeks

Top tip: we found buying tickets earlier or before you get there was cheaper! Also Golden Buddha is nearly a third of the price of mambos!

Observations and/or conclusion: my days of just going to events for the sake of it and because I’m in Ibiza are probably gone. A longer holiday being more “picky” over which club nights I attend suits me better. Overall it’s still the best place on earth, nothing ever quite beats it.

Dates you were there:

Friday 6th September – Saturday 14th September (Fifth visit to the island, having been in 2006, 2007, 2014 and 2022)

Where you stayed:

Had a fun night at Pikes in 2022 so for this trip we decided to stay there for the first three nights, Friday to Monday (Garden suite, room 9, the one with the picture of the cat with the monocle on the wall!) Nice room, comfy bed (though the outdoor bathtub is out the front, so rather public!) Was great being able to just pop back to the room and step out right back into the party. Excellent vibe staying there. And Pikes (unsurprisingly) in the mornings is so quiet and calm, feels like you've almost got the place to yourself!

Then after the debauchery of Pikes, more relaxing accommodation - five nights at Agroturismo Can Toni Xumeu (five minutes from Cala Llonga). Beautiful and peaceful agroturismo with only five rooms on a spacious site with a lovely pool. Great food and friendly staff. Lovely room with a terrace. Couldn’t recommend more highly! 20-minute taxi to Ibiza Town.

Club nights visited:

Had a chilled one on our first night, the Friday; went for dinner at Monkey, walked along the sunset strip (and had a quick peep at the West End out of curiosity – very quiet) and then headed to Ibiza Town for drinks. When we returned to Pikes, at around 1am, the queue outside (the night being Melon Bomb) was enormous, stretching right around the corner! Had a dance for 30 mins (and even heard Spice Girls being played in Freddies) before bed.

Trip (get-traum), Club Chinois (Saturday 7th)

After dinner at Pikes, we had a little dance in Plaza Mayor to Phat Phil Cooper. Yasmin was playing in Freddies (a reduced line-up due to the tragic death of Danielle Moore; Crazy P Soundsystem were due to play). We heard a few tracks, seemed like a fun, eclectic set; house, disco, funk. Freddies was rammed, to the extent that it was uncomfortable to be in there for a decent length of time (and as another poster pointed out, the over-use of the strobe added to this).

Our plan for this night, though, was to see Felix Da Housecat’s set at Flower Power, Pacha, and then walk over to Chinois to see Traumer. We got to Pacha at around 1:30am and the dance floor was already packed like sardines. Just not an enjoyable experience. So we only stayed for 30 minutes and then headed to Chinois.

At Chinois we caught 20 mins or so of D'Julz’s set; what I heard was rather disappointing – dull tech-house. Thankfully things picked up (no doubt helped by the beans kicking in!) from 3am onwards when Traumer and Enzo Siragusa came on and played B2B. Really enjoyed this. It’s a nice venue, good sound and visuals, and the crowd was very international. It was busy but there was room to dance.

Sunday Best at Pikes (Sunday 8th)

Had a nice, chilled recovery afternoon by the Pikes pool with a cocktail or two, listening to tunes by For Mankind. In the evening had a great dinner and sunset at The View, before returning to Pikes for a dance. Saoirse played a nice house set – Freddies was busy, but not quite the sardine fest that it was on Saturday. Nevertheless, we had more fun dancing to Saoirse’s set in the bar room next to Freddies (next to the ball-pit room).

On all three weekend Pikes nights it was a good crowd, older, though mainly British, so lacking a bit of diversity in that respect.

HE.SHE.THEY, Amnesia (Tuesday 10th)

We were feeling a bit tired having spent a lovely day on Formentera, but made it along. In the main room for HE.SHE.THEY, Jennifer Cardini rolled out good techno to a fun crowd – really enjoyed it, whilst Paul Woolford played B2B with Melé on the terrace for Claptone’s Masquerade. After Cardini, Marcel Dettman was next up in the main room. He played a strong set, however about half way through, the already sparse crowd unfortunately thinned out further as people went next door to see Claptone, until Dettman (through no fault of his own) was playing to a nearly empty room. Was a shame as Dettman was who I’d come to see. I heard that in peak season HE.SHE.THEY was busier, naturally, but at this late season stage it perhaps suffered from the fact that it's an unlikely bedfellow with Masquerade...

Towards the end of the night, I went next door to see some of Claptone – not my usual thing but better than I thought it would be. Fun production touches, dancers etc, and lots of room to dance.

Sven Vath, Las Dalias/Akasha (Thursday 12th)

We arrived about 9:30pm and particularly enjoyed the last hour and a half of the outdoor session. Good sound system in Akasha and (I don’t know if this is a regular thing at Akasha or just for this night) the no photo policy was welcome! Hadn’t seen Sven play for many years and thought it was a good set (7 hours, peppered with the occasional crowd-pleaser) Great night – good crowd, older, and very international.

On Friday, our final night, I was curious to see the renovated Teatro Pereyra (having had a great, blurry night there in 2014!), so we bought the €50 tickets (balcony) for the ‘Hippie Heaven’ show, a musical potted history of Ibiza featuring two hapless American hippy protagonists. This was gorgonzola levels of cheese, but in our monged-out state, post a big night at Sven, quite an amusing way to spend our final night 😂 The theatre looks great.

Best night: Sven Vath, Las Dalias/Akasha

Worst night: Perhaps slightly harsh as was only there 30 minutes, but Flower Power gets this as there was no room to dance…

Best bar: Only went to a few bars. Probably Paradise Lost. Also had cocktails at Up, on the roof of the Standard Hotel, which has a nice view of Dalt Villa.

Best place to eat: Great dinner with the sunset and Es Vedrà in the distance at The View, 7Pines. Went for the 4 course tasting menu option. Great service.

Nice meal at Etxeko (girlfriend had the lamb, which was delicious, my steak was good. Feel like we should have done the tasting menu rather than à la carte to have gotten the full experience, however we were in a bit of a hurry to get to Las Dalias for Sven!) Great service again.

Also enjoyed dinners at Amante, Monkey Ibiza, Sa Finca (lovely terrace spot, very peaceful), La Scala (Ibiza Town, nice intimate ambience and tasty food) and Quimera (Formentera, great view of the sunset)

And lunches at Sa Trinxa, Cotton Beach Club, La Paloma, Agroturismo Atzaro (we went for the spa) and Restaurant KinAnA (at our agroturismo)

Best beach and/or beach club:
On this trip we visited a few beaches that I hadn’t been to before: including Migjorn on Formentera, which we really liked; Cala Tarida; and finally made it to the north of the island, visiting S'arenal Gros and S'arenal Petit in Portinatx.

And returned to beaches we love, including idyllic Ses Illetes and Salinas.

Visited Santa Eulalia for the first time and had a nice walk along the beach front there.

Beach club wise, we went to Sa Trinxa (my favourite) and Jockey Club.

Money spent: Too much

Biggest regret: Only a minor one; would have loved to have gone to Harvey at Pikes on Monday, however we were checking out of Pikes on Monday morning (we’d booked Pikes back in February before we knew he’d be playing then) and naturally we wanted our Pikes nights to be when we were actually staying at the hotel.

I was tempted to go to Pacha on the Sunday for Solomun and Dixon, by reports it sounds like it was a pretty good one, however I knew it would be totally rammed, and my girlfriend in particular really dislikes it when it’s that busy… Also, I don’t feel like we had a proper Freddie’s session, due to it always being packed. I don't think we were in there for more than 30 mins at a time. I’m sure some people don’t mind it like that but after 20 years of clubbing I like a bit of space!

Going back?: Of course.

Top tip:
Do go to Ibiza for a bit longer if you're able to so you can factor in more relaxation time!

Make sure that the ferry you get back from Formentera is one that takes 30 mins rather than an hour!

It was my second time staying at an agroturismo and again loved it, beautiful surroundings and very tranquil after hectic nights out!

Walking along the walls of Dalt Villa (with the cannons) on our final evening, through fortuitous timing we had a great view of the sun setting behind the hills, and despite the great view and it being a Friday night it wasn’t too busy.

Observations and/or conclusion:

The taxi situation seemed much better this time than when I last went in June 2022.

Second half of June or first half of September are my favourite times to visit – all the parties in full swing so plenty of choice where to go, yet not quite as rammed as peak season (hopefully, though as above there are exceptions…!) June might just about edge it for me due to the longer days and less chance of showers. I wonder too if the clubs are slightly less crowded in June compared to September? (They seemed so when I went in June 2022 anyway, however maybe this was an unusual year as it was the first full season back after the lifting of Covid clubbing restrictions)

Overall a great trip!

Overall a great trip!
Fab review. Dread to imagine how much you spent 😂

Dates you were there: Sept 4 - 9 (Wed - Mon). This was my wife and my first trip back to the island since 2002 when we spent the summer living and working here after just starting to date in Barcelona a couple months earlier. So it was a pretty special trip for us. Also the longest vacation we've taken away from our kids.

Where you stayed: The Standard, Ibiza town. Loved the hotel - this was a bit of a splurge for us but I feel like we got great value and we will definitely stay there again. We booked one of the smallest/cheapest rooms in the hotel and it was super nice/clean/chic and reasonably sized with a king bed, small couch/day bed, good sized bathroom, very well stocked mini bar/fridge, overall plenty of room for the two of us. We had breakfast included which turned out to be a huge score - served until noon every day, delicious food and lots of it - it was basically a big lunch for us as we rolled into the restaurant minutes before noon every day. Service at the hotel was fantastic - loved the front desk staff and concierge/guest experience team - they made us feel like friends that they wanted to show a good time to. The hotel arranged our Vespa for the week and also booked us a boat rental for the two of us, along with comp'ing us bottles of booze and overall just being cool/friendly, chatting us up and giving us recs on things to do and places to go.

Club nights visited:

Pacha - Bedouin Saga
DC10 - Solid Grooves
Amnesia - Metamorfosi
Chinois - Trip/ Get Traum
Playa Soleil - Palmarama

my wife was a bit apprehensive about my enthusiasm to go out clubbing, as it's been years since the last time. but she was awesome and we had some really fun nights together. our nights overall ended on the early side and were basically sober but super fun to visit a bunch of spots we used to go to, and just have a good dance together. I quite liked every night for different reasons but my favorites for music and vibes were probably DC10 and Chinois.

Chiniois surprised me with an $80 ticket at the door when they were going for $40 online, but I arrived at peak time and figured it must be hoppin inside, which it was. great sound system at Chinois and Traumer and ENzo Siragusa b2b were awesome. seemed like maybe a more 'local' crowd than tourist at Chinois, not sure but it was a good vibe, lots of people seemed to know each other.

DC10 was packed as expected, but I found it totally manageable and found a good spot to dance in front of the booth in the Terrace, and I quite enjoyed being in a fully packed room with a bunch of other loons going for it and totally into the music. I went solo to DC10, it was never my wife's favorite venue and she would have been more put off by the crowding for sure.

Best night: DC10 - I had never heard of Ahmed Spins before but when I arrived the Terrace was totally packed so I went to the Main Room where he was spinning, and he killed it, dropping banger after banger. rad surprise/new discovery. eventually wandered back to the Terrace for Martinez Bros and wiggled my way to a space up front to dance, they were great and the crowd was super into it, very fun night.

Worst night: they were all good nights. the sound system at Amnesia seemed the worst of the venues we visited, and I felt like the music was still in second gear until we left around 3:30 although was starting to pick up as we were getting ready to leave. but the vibe in the huge terrace room, also packed full, was rad. i was getting vibes of primal cave people dancing to minimal drumbeat tracks and everyone losing their minds together... fun.

Best bar: didn't really go to any bars

Best place to eat: Aiyanna (Cala Nova) - we went late for dinner and shut the place down, hoping to hit Akasha afterwards. but we arrived at Akasha too early, seemed totally dead as it was only a bit after 12, so we skipped it. it was a slight bummer to miss the sun/views of the beach restaurant by going at night but the food and drinks were amazing.

Best beach and/or beach club: we went to lots of beaches but no beach clubs - Cala Llonga, Sol den Serra, Cala Nova, Salinas, Cala Codolar. Cala Codolar was our favorite as it was super chill and almost empty, great views, nice little chiringuito for drinks...

Money spent: $$$$ most of the budget was spent on plane tix and hotel tho

Biggest regret:

Going back?: absolutely

Top tip:

Observations and/or conclusion: when we told people on the island that it was our first time back in 20 years, the universal response was 'it's changed so much'. but to us it felt just like we remembered it... really the vibe was just as magical as it was all those years ago.

We went to Formentera last week and made the mistake of getting the one hour ferry over, the man at the counter told us it was half hour! Make sure it’s not a car ferry is a top tip for sure. We got overtaken by the one that left half hour later. That said we wasn’t in a rush and the deck at the top with the comfy seats was a nice place to relax in the sun looking back at the island.

Haha, yeah we accidentally got the long one late at night on the way back. Was fine, but we had clubbing plans. Great view of the stars from the comfy, reclined seats on the top deck, disturbed somewhat by some rowdy lads blasting out reggaeton and dancing about the deck for an hour! 🙉

Overall a great trip!
Ha we were there same time, and a very similar trip. Clubs visited etc roll on next year!

Dates you were there: 10th – 20th September

Where you stayed:

We stayed at two different accommodations,10-12th Hostal Alocs, Es Figueral beach. It is a budget hotel, but it was amazing. The location was beautiful, the owners, friendly and welcoming. I cannot fault it and it is highly recommended.

12th – 20th a beautiful, small remote villa in the hills near Es Cubells. It was difficult to drive to but that made it even more special. Our trip to Ibiza was more of a chilled experience.

Club nights visited: Pikes – DJ Harvey. Pacha, SAGA Sven

Best night: Pikes had the potential to be the best, but it was just too crowded. I tried to enter Freddies but it was impossible. No dancing was had, a night chatting to randoms instead (which I love just as much).

Worst night: None

Best bar: Aluna, met Vaughn and got chemical enhanced shots 😊 It was only supposed to be a quiet night, that they never end that way! Also. Enjoyed Up – Standard, amazing views!

Best place to eat: I can’t choose. I guess La Gaia, the food was impeccable, as was the whole experience. I also loved Imprevisto (thanks spotlight, I would have never of found this place) My favourite spot on the island is Sa Trinxa and I cannot fault the food there either.

Best beach and/or beach club: Aguas Blancas, we had never been here before. There was hardly anyone on it, it was heavenly.

Money spent: I haven’t worked it out yet!

Biggest regret: Not going to Akasha, at the beginning of our holiday we were only a 6 min drive away! I wished we had went clubbing more.

Going back?: YES

Top tip: Rent electric bikes for Formentera. We did the whole 42km in the midday sun and boy did the power come in handy up the hills. Plus, you do not need to queue to get to the beaches.

Observations and/or conclusion:

Firstly, I would like to thank Spotlight for all your valuable recommendations. Every place I jotted down and visited were simply perfect!

We had not been to Ibiza since 2005. I was very apprehensive. Yes, it has changed but it still holds an incredibly special place in my heart, and I hope to go back there very soon. I was fearing that it was going to be way beyond my budget, but you can still find places that are affordable. 5-euro beers on the beach or coffee with a light breakfast for less than 20 euros (2 people) with views of Es Vedra.

*EDIT* I should have added, we used the car hire company Moto Luis - fantastic. No hidden costs and paid the deposit back straight away.
We were recommended to download the taxi app TaxiClick. Really handy! We had no problems with taxis, friendly, quick and affordable :)

Dates you were there:

September 14th to September 25th.
First trip longer than 7 days since 2019 (Canada)

Where you stayed:

Ryan's Marina Standard Room - 4 nights
Grupotel Santa Eularia - 4 nights
Ryan's Marina Penthouse - 3 nights

Decided on the above itinerary due to plans which did change slightly but found taxi's to be just fine when we needed them.

We enjoy Ryan's Marina for the location & comfort, added to that we booked most nights back in November with a 25% discount.

Grupotel was a decent location about 20 minutes walk into the town area.
It is dated, think the brown varnished wood, but it was very clean had lots of facilities and the staff are good.
The hotel was very quiet though with no life so would consider somewhere else next time.
Don't want party central, looking at you Vibra District, but also not a morgue.

Club nights visited:

Sunday 15th : Hi - Glitterbox
Monday 16th : Pikes - DJ Harvey (briefly)
Wednesday 18th : Port - Solomun
Wednesday 18th : Pacha - Saga / Sven
Saturday 21st : Akasha - Sasha
Sunday 22nd : Pacha - Solomun
Monday 23rd : Playa Soleil - ADID
Tuesday 24th : Amnesia - Kevin and Perry

Best night:

After worrying about how busy this would be my wife would give it to Glitterbox (or ADID or Kevin & Perry) while I would give Sasha the nod.
Perfect music and setting at Akasha for me.
Hi wasn't as rammed as I expected but we didn't try and go in the middle of the Theatre at peak.
Had a great spot for DJ Harvey with space to dance in the Club room so caught his whole set.

First time back to Amnesia since the 90s and what a space.
We had a blast with seemingly everyone there up for a good time and a dance.
We had balcony tickets but spend most of our time downstairs, worth it for when we wanted a breather and quieter toilets & bar.

Honourable mention to Playa Soleil which were weren't going to visit but felt refreshed and needed to do something.
Great vibes and good venue, Lee was right in the zone as he quite often is.

Worst night:

All were good, and purely my fault, but the Pikes experience didn't quite hit the spot this time for the first time.
It was 48 hours into the trip so all on me for hitting a wall.
No DJ in Plaza Mayor either so just couldn't wait around for Freddies to open.
If I did then I am sure it would have been amazing.

Feel harsh putting this bit in "Worst" as we enjoyed the nights probably more than the better half.
While we enjoyed Pacha we are rethinking whether to do closing now as the peak hours means dancing around the edge unless you fancy the scrum.
Current thoughts are maybe more chill and smaller venues, Tanit closing definitely on the agenda.
Maybe Monday at Pikes as well if we drop Pacha closing but this will still be a sardine fest.
But going to let the dust settle on this one before making a decision.

Best bar:

We enjoyed sitting around in Mr CoCo's in Ibiza Town to chill & people watch and who doesn't like 5 Euro Passionfruit Mojitos.
Food for a small place is good too and friendly staff.

Palco is also a favourite for chilling about before heading somewhere.

In Santa Eularia Project Social cocktails were sampled a few times.

Soul Good (just around from where we were in Santa Eularia at Niu Blau), recommended on here, was a great place to relax overlooking the beach.
Is it a beach club as it is on the beach?

Best place to eat:

All good meals this trip, didn't regret any of them, but Palo Santo before going into Akasha was really good food.
Not cheap but not expensive for what it is in my opinion. Good flavours and excellent service. Then a short walk into Askasha.

Shout out to Argma which is consistent quality as you would expect as run by the same Tapas team.

Best beach and/or beach club:

Sa Trinxa, first time here and was perfect for what we needed at that point.

Money spent:

A lot, savings took a hit :)

I'm going to log this in the "you don't ask a lady her age" box.

Biggest regret:

Trying to push on day 3, enjoyed a meal in Aragma and the pool at Pikes, but should have not tried that one.

Going back?:

15 days time :)

Top tip:

Keep an eye on deals around November, we saved a lot on the accommodation by knowing we had the flights.

Listen to your body and mind so you can dip early, didn't make it to the bitter end any night this time and all the better for it.
Doing it this way meant didn't wipe out most of the next day. Easy to say I know.

Dates you were there: 21st - 28th September

Where you stayed: Sol Bahia Ibiza Suites

Club nights visited: Flower Power at Pacha - I went for the DJ Harvey night and really enjoyed it! I'm mainly a trance head but I do enjoy a bit of disco! We were in early doors as one of the group had an early entry ticket but it was great to see the place fill up. Had a proper old school feel while the dance floor filled up with groups of girls dancing and then the groups of guys sidling up next to them. Brilliant 😂 I enjoyed the "theatrics" with the dancers and the random thing that looked like cousin IT from the Adams family hanging from the ceiling and dancing. I was in and out of the garden as it got busier and got chatting as you do, some people didn't seem too happy with the new format as the music had changed. I'd not been to any of these before so wasn't able to comment. A very mixed crowd in the end, I bailed at 2:30 as it was starting to get too busy for me. Had I not been awake for almost 24 hours at this point due to the early flight I might have stayed longer but my head wasn't there.

Mercury Rising closing party at Pikes - It's always nice to bump in to random people as you go in and get chatting but when they are forum members its even better @Naive Melody ! I spent lots of time chatting by the pool, managed to eventually find my friends but they left on the early side. I had a life moment made when Club Tropicana was played and I was by the pool though  I was able to get in to Freddies after about 1am ish, and was like the hokey-cokey for a while as I dipped in and out due to the heat in there. Got chatting to a couple just outside and stayed there for a while. Almost getting locked in a toilet cubicle due to a sticky lock was not a highlight of my night but thankfully a toilet attendant heard my cries for help and saved me. I soon got over that and then bumped into @Anselmi K so it was good to see him! We went for a bit of a dance in Freddies but again the heat and wall of tiredness hit me so it signalled my time to leave at around 4:30. I was glad I decided to go rather than be put off by the horror stories I've heard of late.

Kevin and Perry at Amnesia - this was the event of the week for me and my friends, we've been to all of them so far, but I'm not sure if the novelty is wearing off for me but I'm finding it a bit samey. While I love classic trance, and seeing Dave Pearce at Amnesia is always something special for me as listening to him and his Ibiza sets back in the day was what made my love of trance music, this year just felt a bit meh. I don't know if it was because I was practically sober, but there were definitely more arseholes in the crowd than previously. I started off dancing with all my friends but when I had a glass bottle fall off a podium and miss my foot by a centimetre or so I knew it was time to move, so I went to dance near the toilets by the DJ booth as there was some decent space. Someone who I'd met earlier on in the week saw me there and said they had space by the bar so I went to join them there which was where I randomly bumped in to @Sheffrb ! I stayed there for the rest of the night until some of the group decided they were going back to San An about 4ish so considering I was pretty sober I feel I did well!

Cocoon 25th Anniversary party at 528 - see worst night for review.

One more Time at Eden - as I had a "one more time" wristband I figured I'd pop along to this for an hour or so, as me and my friend had come back to Ibiza Rocks Bar to see a friend play a set after 528. Music was house/funky house to start which I don't mind but they were playing 20/30 second clips of a song and mixing it in to something else. Got very annoying after a while. Hung on for Judge Jules and he went in hard. My ears started hurting so figured it was time to leave. Made my exit about 3ish.

Shine at Eden - see best night review.

Best night: Shine by a mile - Eden was packed but not completely rammed, plenty of space for me to go on my wanderings 😂 also the crowd were really lovely, whenever I got nudged by people there was a "sorry" that went with it. Musically it was just brilliant, even better than Kevin and Perry I think!

Worst night: While it wasn't really nighttime while I visited, the intention was to stay for the afterparty, but after almost getting in to a fight in the queue for the ladies loos I decided this party was not for me. I really enjoyed the music, Marcel Dettman was good and Sven was starting to get going when me and my friend decided to call time on the night. The venue itself though is really lovely, lots of places to sit and chill. We'd managed to find a spot towards the back for Sven where we weren't getting shoved past so much but the toilet queue situation was a complete buzz kill. Far too many people there with rude attitudes so we left.

Best bar: My hotel bar did one of the best sangrias I've had!

Best place to eat: Finally got to try Relish this time round in San Antonio Bay and I was completely underwhelmed. I've really enjoyed my visits to Tapas in the past so was hoping for good things but was disappointed. Que Pasa by the Egg in San An saved the week for me though with their green chicken curry. Really hit the spot when I was looking for some comfort food - definitely would recommend going there again even though the service was sloooooow.

Best beach and/or beach club: Didn't really visit any special beaches this time round as I seemed to spend a lot of time either on my balcony, at the pool bar, or meeting my friends in San An.

Money spent: Lots.

Biggest regret: No dips in the sea this time round - must try harder next time. Also being almost sober for Kevin and Perry, might have enjoyed it more if I wasn't.

Going back?: Of course!

Top tip: If you're going to an event at 528 go early, we spent ages in traffic and racked up an extra €8 in the taxi fair from San An.

Observations and/or conclusion: I've not stayed up the Cala Gracio end of San Antonio before but it is just so chilled up there! While it was just what I needed, I don't think I appreciated quite how far it was away from things and spent extra money on taxis as I just couldn't be bothered to walk from town back to the hotel after meeting my friends. I'm sure there's a bus that would go that way so will investigate that further next time if I stay up that way.

Eivissa Review 2024

I suppose there are cheaper, faster and more appealing ways of crossing the Mediterranean than on a spartan GNV ferry with airless cabins and putrid, festival-esque toilets but I never really do things the conventional way. Some friends had convinced me earlier in the summer to join them on their return trip to Ibiza, exactly 5 years after Vueling had the same personnel stranded in departures for 10 hours with barely a drinks token in compensation (a sordid experience which may well have influenced things..)

Arguably the Ryanair of the seas, nobody catches a GNV ferry out of choice. The Italian crew are polite but disengaged. Everywhere, there are signs of wear and tear. The restaurant is best avoided. My cohorts had never done the journey before and seemed a little underwhelmed. There were perhaps naive, romantic notions of docking as the sun rose, but the timings were off and all you could make out were the garish neon colours of a tower in Platja d'en Bossa in the distance. I guess it isn’t the same arriving in the dark, with heavy bags. But one you disembark, the adrenaline kicks in.

NE coast

We booked a stay at the ApartHotel Atlantic in Es Canar. It appealed because it was cheaper than anywhere else, and had a pool and included two apartments in the deal, to accommodate the divas in our quartet who insisted on having their own room. Getting to Es Canar involved getting to Santa Eularia first. Autos Mari are one of the better car hires. They’re honest and reliable, even if you’re saddled with a snail-like Fiat Panda with deeply suspect air con. It was fun though reconnecting with the NE of the island. I always seem to gravitate to the eastern coast and miss out Sant Josep almost entirely. Es Canar is known for its 'hippy market' (I did actually see a real life hippy in Es Canar driving one of those tiny little tuk tuk vans) but I was more struck by the sheer number of bars and cafes selling English breakfasts, with Wolves or Derby playing on the telly. At times it just felt like an ageing gammon ‘n’ mutton fest I ordinarily swerve with laser precision. But gradually and tentatively I slowly warmed to the resort, in part because it offers a real humanity compared to the sinister, luxury developments enveloping the island, the REAL enemy in all this. Everyone without exception was really friendly and my only issue was the noise from the all-inclusive where my monged head could’ve done without the Grease soundtrack. The ApartHotel Atlantic probably needs a new lick of paint and higher pressure showers but it served us well. The staff were funny, at one point even throwing each other fully clothed into the pool. I would’ve preferred quieter music around the pool but it was possible to zone out and it never made my teeth itch.

Es Canar has additional perks. It is very close to Cala Martina, Cala Nova, Cala Pada, Cala Boix and a few other fave swimming spots. I hadn’t been to Cala Boix in ages. We turned up just as there was a deluge. I really like the Quiosc chiringuito there, the kind of shack I wish populated more beaches. The guy who runs it was pretty funny. The sea felt almost Atlantic. For its part Cala Nova was a bit disappointing. The sea was filled with gunk for starters. Before turning off onto the dusty track down to the beach we spotted a shell of a car on the roadside with every component stripped. My fave discovery was tucked away down a discreet track, 500 metres and 1 million spiritual miles away from the Tina Turner and Peter Kay tribute nights in the main resort. All I can say is Can Suldat is absolutely STUNNING, a beautiful enchanted bar/restaurant accessed via a garden with a live Spanish guitarist who also improvises with other instruments. It is way better suited to couples than groups who invariably (and sometimes rudely) talk over him. We met a wild and entertaining Belgian-Moroccan girl there called Rabia who I gleaned had some involvement with Akasha. There was serious talk of heading there for M.A.N.D.Y with some freebies on the door but there was an argument I didn't understand and everything went tits up.

In fact, one of the perils of travelling in a group is the loss of independence. You kind of feel obliged to follow everyone else (the price of democracy!) and I miss the freedom to choose and in particular the freedom NOT to have lunch at horrifically overpriced and poncey beach restaurants such as the Aiyanna. What a contrast with Anitas further inland at Sant Carles to which of course we paid an obligatory visit. I don’t do trash Ibiza but then I don’t do poncey Ibiza either. Some of us would actually prefer neither. Thank god therefore for the more relaxed vibe of Cala Martina. We hung out there with my local mate Ian in 2022 when there was live music. It looked like the stage outside Chirincana had since been removed (?) but it was still nice to hang out on the picnic tables. I noticed some strange vehicles in the campsite. It looked like a whole load of Dutch had somehow commandeered an American school bus. My kinda people though I imagine it is an inferno in peak summer.

Ibiza town

I’ve always adored the old town. Aspects along the harbour have got a little tackier, and anyone trying to entice me into anywhere is a red card offence, but the gay area still has it, the good vibe around Vara de Rey, the climb up the hill, the classic iconic scenery. I was totally gutted about Malanga closing two weeks before (it's always the good guys never the UN*V*RS*) but the show must go on. We had two meals in the historic quarter. Huge shout to @Amigo for the Bai Bai recommendation at the end of the port. I went for the 500g entrecote. Not cheap for a freelancer but absolute top quality. The Basques never let the side down. Excellent service and an optimum evening temperature. Earlier in the week we had a more basic meal at the Porto Salé on Carrer de Castelar, way more touristy, but the staff again were first class. A great spot for watching everyone go past. I mentioned how fun Paradise Lost is in another thread. Another bar you should maximise before the vecinos, rivals or authorities get too hostile. Sometimes though it is more about the unspectacular local bars where real Spain comes alive after work eg La Manduca, the ideal kind of place to meet and have a cheap cerveza before hitting the town.

No great secret that I only go to SA when needs must and the plan was to dump the car in the huge sandpit on Carrer de Cala Gracio to retrieve the following day after Pikes and a smacked out dawn swim, only for it not to happen…We had time for a bite before the party and found ourselves on Carrer de Cervantes facing a (short-lived) dilemma between Donde Paco Tapería on one side of the street and Fatsos on the other. (Calling a dining establishment Fatsos is certainly a novel marketing strategy. We crossed the street.)

At one point we also popped over to Cala de Bou too which in truth did nothing to win me over. We stopped off somewhere which IIRC offered

Burger and Chips
Pizza and Chips
Curry and Chips
Fish and Chips
Cyanide, Morphine, Arsenic and Chips

Who am I to sneer though? Nobody cares what I think. Who the f*ck am I to judge? You come to realise in middle age that everyone has different lives, expectations, diets, ideas. It just ain’t for me.

Of course, our main reason for heading to SA was Pikes and over the week we put in 3 visits in total. I already evangelised enough in the Pikes thread. I was nervous beforehand. I did wonder if I would enjoy it this time but when all the elements come together it is such good fun being around wiser heads who just want to be silly for a few days. Musically there is very little on the island I give a shit about so you cannot be too picky about venues, though of course there are aspects of Pikes which are annoying. The hype is irritating and the smugness at times is just ugh + could do with a more diverse crowd although was good to see a strong global contingent at DJ Harvey and a lot of Spanish at Homies. We popped in for an hour on the last night. [Shout to @Anselmi K . Nice to finally meet you!] We didn’t stay too long - were pretty exhausted and rave flu was kicking in by then. Gutted to miss il capo Leo Mas. I might also have caught a glimpse of FGP nonchalantly perched on a garden wall. I had ten years of searching questions but where do you even start? Inexplicably, we lost him in the crowd before I could even fire off one. The Harvey night of course is the one that will live long in the memory. I get that it won’t appeal to everyone, and if you want solid prog, organic house or panel beater techno it certainly isn’t for you. I just gradually got bored of continuous 4/4 about 15 years ago and he and various other beards I follow gradually filled that void. I know my clubbing days are limited now and I need to treasure these moments.

At some point I reached an age where my priorities shifted a lot. The music still matters but not like it did. Reality, people, life all get in the way. Indeed, my favourite moment of the week wasn’t music, food, dirty afters or sunset-related but actually a chat in Catalan with the guy who runs the Insula bar at the far end of Carrer des Riu (SE). He has lived in Ibiza for 24 years and originally came from the town of Granollers just outside Barcelona. He told me that the famous greixonera dessert (a guilty pleasure) is as unique to Ibiza as hierbas and way superior to the ‘pudin’ options on the mainland which are just glorified flans. With a nostalgic beam, he told me how he used to knock about in the same BCN clubs I remembered as an Erasmus student like Luz de Gas back in the 90s, which totally floored me! Those family bars are the ones I treasure, and as cool as the music is at somewhere like The Standard, those swanky places are evidently set up for posing not socialising.

At times, it was a week of real emotional extremes. The euphoria of reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, versus the heartbreaking scene I described on Cala Llonga beach which makes you realise how quickly life can be snuffed out. I chatted with various people over the week, locals, expats, DJs and I guess I feel slightly more tuned into the Ibiza ecosystem. For all the marketing, the island is ultimately a deeply emotional experience for all of us even if not all us yet fully understand why.

Dates: 20-28 Sept
Money spent? weeps
Will I go back? Oh yes
Top tips? Don’t believe every internet chinese whisper...
Regrets? would like to have run into a few more faces off here but sadly was not to be

Hasta la pasta!

Great honest review... Fair play on all the club nights you hit! Not done that many myself in years.. As just need to learn to stop once l start, hence second day gets wasted, literally! Lucky you getting back for a second bite of the cherry as they say in a couple of weeks. Enjoy

Combination of not pushing too hard (bar Pikes) and it worked a lot better this time. 4:30am seems to be my sweet spot along with less alcomohol added to the mix too!

After doing a lot this year taking a low key approach next trip with just Tanit closing & Pikes on Monday scheduled. Dropped Pacha closing as decided the money and internal battery will cope better :)

Also allows a first trip across to Formentera to be included.
