i know its been discussed before but what's this place like now? New beach garden looks nice and not been as many 'bad' reviews as has been in the past.

Booked tickets for El Row in July and just a bit concerned it's a 2 hour train trip etc. I know they have door pickers and the theme seems to be 'no stone island / moncler / lacoste' etc, no man bags and don't look like a gangsta. Is it as simple as that or might an early 30s chap in a plain tshirt and jeans or shorts have a problem?

If you wanna guarantee entry to elrow at 338 then just go in the fancy dress of the theme.

If you wanna guarantee getting turned away from elrow at 338, make sure you tell the door picker that you really excited to be "seeing DJ elrow"!!

You'll be fine in small, mixed groups if you have a good attitude.

FYI they deliberately hold the queue up to see if anybody gets aggy whilst waiting.

While I would normally look to make an effort, it is a Bollywood theme. And to be honest I'd be a bit worried my attempt at fancy dress could be taken the wrong way while using public transport !! Is just 2 of us, both male.

OK sounds fine, I can imagine I get the type of people that have had problems in the past knowing the London house scene of late.

I'm going tomorrow for the first time, looking forward to it but a touch apprehensive as I've heard about some distinctly unappetising practices from the door pickers from a very knowledgeable source. Will report back here.

Let me know how it goes. I've given it a swerve as i can't trust Southern Railway to get me home on a Sunday evening at the moment unfortunately.

Also a few of our group have massively over indulged this month...

I was there in March, rain was literally running down the sides of the walls and dripping into the club, it was very much an unfinished project I felt.

Back In Aug for the Space Tour, really interested to see the new roof etc

Went for Elrow and Sunday and happy to report it was great fun! Never been to the venue or the party before so here's a few thoughts on both, apologies on length:

Studio 338
  • Had been warned about the attitude of the security team so was wary but found them to be no different to other London venues. They absolutely refuse entry to anyone without passport or driving license, one of our group had neither so couldn't come in with us. I believe it's an insurance / fire regulation thing, I'm continually baffled by people that don't bring out some form of ID clubbing with them. The team were reasonable when we discussed it with them but wouldn't budge
  • A little politeness goes a long way, I have never had any trouble with security which I think can largely be attributed to being pleasant with them. It's the usual drill at Studio 338 - contents of your pockets on the table, a pat down then on your way. After that you hand the ticket they give you in the queue to someone else and you're in. The chap I handed it to was shocked when I said hello to him and thanked me for acknowledging him - it's this sort of thing which can make your entry much smoother
  • Whilst queueing I saw two individuals being escorted out, don' know why but suspect it could be connected with the large amounts of people unsubtly dipping fingers in little plastic bags and biting off bits of tablets. It was a daytime party as well so no cover of darkness against the few security people walking around in hi-vis jackets
  • Soundsystem - good, punchy Void speakers in the glass-ceilinged terrace and pretty good on the outdoor beach area too considering the acoustics and sound level limits
  • Crowd - didn't see any aggressive behaviour in there. Typical neat side partings and buttoned up shirts on what looked like largely South London British men. Some of the women were scandalously dressed, don't know if this is a warm-weather thing or a welcome new trend(!) There were a noticeable amount of people who'd overdone it, especially some very mashed young women. I never like to see anyone slumped in the corner and there were a fair few cases of this (always being looked after by someone though)
  • The whole beach area worked really well for me, especially with the alright weather and Spanish theme to the party. It kept the terrace from getting too packed around peak time and a great alternative "room" in and of itself
  • Bars in general were a bit busier than I'm used to when clubbing, probably caused by it being a daytime party, never too long a wait though and no aggro
Elrow
  • Coupons for a free drink and couple of plates of tapas on arrival goes a long way to creating good will for your party! As do the dancers / stilt walkers who looked like they were having the time of their lives, felt a little bad for the poor sod dressed as a sardine though.
  • Music:
    • Jasper James took things up several notches mid afternoon in the beach area, good housey stuff and took the crowd from milling around, drinking and chatting to dancing
    • Skream's mixing was distracting but enjoyed his set nonetheless. Fairly sure it was him who played Michael Cleis's "La Mezcla" in some sort of punchier mix, haven't heard that in a club for several years and caught the mood very well
    • The terrace was finished off by a couple of chaps (didn't catch the names, possibly Elrow residents) who played clingy-clangy percussive house which isn't my cup of tea but was still raucous good fun in the room
I could bang on and on but will definitely be back, especially if I can get there for Cocoon in early October!

I take it lots of confetti stuff too?

Pleased it was good fun. It always is with elrow.

Was crowd young? By young I mean younger than 25!

Lots of confetti blasting out, a fairly young crowd but plenty of late 20's / 30's and older there too so I didn't feel as old as I can do clubbing nowadays.

I think the 2 guys you refer to were 'Solardo' they are from Manc and have gone from the start of the year playing tiny clubs/bars in Manc to now being on every lineup known to man it seems, they play a lot of tech house and acid house from what ive seen, and there rise and following is largely down to huge self promotion and i think being a couple of proper mancs also mates with Skream through Kaluki shows which i imagine has helped somewhat.
They seem good fun but i find myself getting a bit annoyed watching them as i think they try and over do it with drops and arms flying everywhere but they look like theyre just loving life atm

What was distracting about Skream? I know he likes to shag the decks but as hes on crutches i thought he might not be so aggressive lol

It's a personal taste thing really. I prefer seamless mixes where you can't hear where one track finishes and another starts so the set sounds like one continuous , unique piece of music that is crafted and shaped by the DJ rather than a series of tracks beatmatched together.

You could hear the joins in Skream's set which I always find distracting as I catch myself telegraphing the changes rather than being absorbed in the music. I suppose it comes with having a more eclectic track selection, the differences in the tracks are more obvious.

WOW! Such a shame.... Sankeys in Manc got evacuated the other night as well but was either minor or a false alarm
