Spotlight Bicycle Club

I have been toying with the idea of cycling to work as at the mo i do an 8 mile round trip waking to and from, have always hated the idea of a cycle hat though!

Something like that. Might look into it for winter though as public transport fills me with dread and it will be dark so no one will se me looking stupido

Went to the tour last year, was great, eating cheese and drinking wine whilst waiting for it all to arrive - great fun!

Can recommend the film chasing legends if that is your kind of thing.

Ah cool, would love to make it over there one day and see some of it. Went to London when they had the Grand Depart, that was great. What stage/s did you see?

Will def check out that film

I use my mountain bike ( I have a Gary Fisher) more than my road bike. Luckily the city I live has a lot of off-road trails and I live about 45 seconds from one, so when I do go out ( have only been out a few times this year) I usually go about 30/40k off road. When I get out on my road bike I usually take secondary highways and do around 40 to 60 k.

so nothing too far, but I wish I had more time... I used to be out on my bike a lot more, hopefully that will change this summer!!

Hmmmm, I have 3, Touring road bike with panniers, had it about 30 years. Sprint racing bike with narrow 20mm tyres had it about 23 years. Finally a Trek MTB had it about 12 years.

Before taking up running 19 years ago I used to go on long cycle jaunts from the North East across the country to the Keswick in the Lake District and back in a day. A distance of 140 miles. The object was the journey rather than the destination.

A business man friend and myself started Derwentside Cycle Club back in the 80s, I was the Routemaster that organised Sunday rides for the club.

Once in 1989 took the Touring bike 100 miles into the Borders of Scotland and slept in a forest with just a Bivvy Bag. Even locked my bike to a tree lol. Cycled back home to discover a load of birthday cards thru the letterbox. I was so switched off I hadn't realised it was my birthday.

Chucked the MTB in the corner of my front room 2 years ago in disgust after getting 4 punctures within a few hundred metres. Will fix it one of these days. :spank:

Hmm... 100 miles you say, Soulman? And 40-60km for you, Utagaura?

I was pretty beat after 25k last Saturday. I suppose it'll take more than 2 weeks to get back into tip top bicycle shape

I think the obstacle-dodging involved in urban biking takes a bit out of you compared to suburban trails. I remember, back in the day, when I could do 30 miles in one go. Been a couple of decades since then!

The worst part is my bum right knee. You learn to ignore the pain and it goes away in a few hours but unpleasant nonetheless.

I am fourtunate to be able to work in a place that is pretty much in the countryside but only about 9 miles away from where I live. So I try and bike into work a couple of times a week, plus once a week get out of a lunchtime on to the Berkshire downs on the mountain bike.

I have a Trek 6000 MTB which is a solid bike and takes plenty of abuse, and have just got a Felt Z6 carbon road bike (thanks cycle to work :)) which I will try and get on as much as I can.

I used to compete in time trials and road races back in the day before discovering beer, cars, women and being lazy. But managed a top 10 placing in an MTB event last year so feel a bit inspired. it is all good exercise ready for Ibiza :)

I don't do it every day! :)

But when I go on the road it's pretty flat where I live, so not too bad!

Thanks! :), I was not so sure about the Bright orange tyres when I first got it, but we will see, might replace them with plain black when they need replacing.

Thanks

Don't stress about puntures!, get yourself onto www.chainreactioncycles.com and buy a pair of slime filled innertubes, they are on offer £4.99 each and so far (touch wood) have worked a treat in preventing punctures for me. (just remember to select the right valve type when you order!)

Nah, don't stress about punctures. Have always carried a spare inner tube and a puncture outfit. Strategy was, first puncture just change inner tube. If unlucky enough to get a second puncture, fix both. Think that maybe the spokes were tightened too much and poking sufficiently to cause the punctures, dunno for sure.

As I'm primarily a runner, the bikes have low priority these days. I run 160-170 miles per month!!!

My bike is a folder as well. Russian model called Forward. 24" wheels, six speeds.

Hello

I'm wanting to buy a bike now we're leaving London (I've always been too much of a scaredy cat to ride a bike in London), are folder bikes ok - I have this irrational fear of it collapsing underneath me :spank:

I have a DMR Trailstar which is currently broken, seems its REALLY hard to pedal and the chain keeps coming off over the top of the top gear. I don't know about fixing bikes, but I am guessing its to do with the derailleur?

Hello!

Folding bikes are fine. Plenty sturdy. I take hops off the curb and such - never once felt like it was anything less than solid.

Ah, bike rides by the seashore. That should be nice!

it could be the chain has a siezed link or two, unless they are kept well lubricated the joints between the links can become stiff and this could be the problem. Best thing is to take it to a bike shop with workshop facilities and get it looked at ready for the summer.

I agree you should get your bike tuned up once a year and more often depending on use ie mud and rain riding.

I've been cycling to and from work on day shifts a few times a week thats about 35 miles round trip, had my bike since end of last year and really starting to clock up the miles now. I use a brilliant app called 'map my ride' which is really useful. I've clocked up a thousand miles since I've had my bike, it's doing wonders for the waist line too :D
