Spanish air traffic controllers threaten strike

In February this year the government slashed controllers salaries by around 40 per cent – cutting the average wage from £290,000-a-year to £167,000 – after it was revealed some enjoyed pay of up to £800,000-a-year.

£167,000 a year's a lot of money!!! :o

be warned - there will be a general strike (huelga) on 29th September - it will be MASSIVELY DISRUPTIVE

very hard job to do.would you fancy doing it.all those risks

I wouldn't say that it would be hard. Responsibility is a factor but 100% of responsibility relies on a pilot. ATC only has the power to advice, not command. They get paid a loads of money because they are in a position where they can practically stop business in some areas and make business quite hard on others.

even if the strike goes ahead, they still guarantee 96% service. so there may be some delays, but it shouldn't be too bad.

I heard the stike was gonna be happening sometime around the 18th Aug and is going to last 3 days. Dont know how true this is. I go 1st Sept so aslong as its not then I couldnt care less

Just got back from Ibiza today (AAAAHHHHHHHH!) and there were already some troubles with the takeoff. According to our pilot the full-on strike would start next weekend. I hope for everyone travelling to Ibiza it's not the case or at least that it'll not affect your travels too much.

Not a very nice attitude, dates can change,it might be you !

When the Ash malarkey was going on (then) there were some that were equally 'care less'

MADRID, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Spain's air traffic controllers should accept the government's offer to settle the conflict over pay and working conditions by arbitration to avoid a strike, Public Works Minister Jose Blanco said on Sunday

How long a notice do Spainish workers have to give before they strike?

10 days apparently, and they are meeting in thursday to decide, so if it does go ahead we're looking at the 22nd :spank:

Which will fook things up for me. I'm arranging a summer party for the 22nd, alot of the guests, 2 dj's and a live act are all meant to be arriving on the sunday :spank:

Apparently though, they are thinking of using outside help includint the military. Spain really could do without this, a 3 day strike in August will cripple alot of business'.

Basically ATC's have to go on strike when it's the most costly for the rest of people. Off-season the pressure to meet their demands is lower because not that many people and business suffer because of the strike.

Due to fly to Ibiza on 19th August from Glasgow, so following this with bated breath every day. Booked the flights ages ago, cheapies with Ryanair so it wouldn't have been too much of a disaster to loose them, but we had planned on waiting to the very last minute to book a hotel but I chickened out and booked one last week...only to read about the strike possibility the very next day, so I've probably lost the hotel money...arrrgh!!

But then, who cares that I've been scraping together every penny I can get from working all the hours under the sun at min wage along with normal work and uni to even be able to go on holiday at all this year, the poor ATCs might only be getting £200,000 to do 30 hours a week. Really my heart bleeds....:(

I just think its such a shame that the Spanish ATCs are willing to cripple the tourism industry in Spain for 3 days over a dispute that if what the reports I have read are true, they have very little chance of winning or even gaining support for.
