> Solomun in Ibiza port, 20th July 2016

eh? bullshit. dixon sometimes also plays all night long sets where he starts with an empty room.

Yeah but how long ago was that? He's now the #1 DJ on Resident Advisor. For those other nights ,he had no choice but to spin to an empty room since he's scheduled open to close for those nights. For Solomun night, he was clearly there right next to Alex Kennon just waiting. He was supposed to come on at 12:30, but I'm gonna assume he started way later because Pacha wasn't that busy as of yet.

These DJs can act like they do it for the music and stuff but they do have egos. I've promoted for events in my hometown where some DJs started past their allotted times because the room wasn't as busy and I've seen other DJs cut their sets short because it wasn't as busy. Guy Gerber even talks about ego in this short facebook doc in Ibiza...

Just my own 2 cents, but Guy Gerber is much much different than Dixon regarding ego. And even so, I've still seen Guy (albeit at times lazily) play some pretty good open to close sets in new york city at a club that didnt really fit him to maybe 100 people or so. While some guys may wait for a room to fill, i wouldn't pin Dixon as one of them. I think for him its more of a feel type thing in just coming on when he is ready to get into it, but thats just my take on it.

Yeah I guess it's just a matter of opinion. I think it's becuase the club wasn't as full, but maybe he's just letting Alex Kennon doing his thing. He was warming up really well afterall

Does he have anymore of these free parties planned around last week in sept. In 2009 there was a free party on beach at san antonio, cant rem who was playing but we had online tickets for wonderland at eden. Beach party was far better but left since we'd already paid the 40€

I've seen guys like Guy J and 16 Bit Lolita's in my hometown also bstsrt

oh good grief man. what are you on about?

Dixon "acting like he does it for the music"

he's first and foremost a music nut. I saw him play amazing sets across London when I lived there 10 years back, often to small rooms of 75 people, when he was still doing obscure stuff with the jazz nerds, sonar kollectiv and CDR at plastic people and getting played on gilles peterson. different dj friends often on rotation, with a telepathic understanding of each other's record bags, different guys sharing their knowledge, the crowd not really caring who exactly was on at 1.03am, because they had full faith in all of them. there no ego whatsoever, just a love of MUSIC and responsible for introducing people like me to german house and the overlap with that whole second generation detroit sound that carl craig pioneered. Then it all took off for Innervisions on the back of Rej (monster sales when it was licensed to Defected - at a time when dance 12s were lucky to shift hundreds) and the festival circuit and then Ibiza called and then finally people like you started to notice. The point I'm making is that you obsess about the wrong things and that most punters couldn't care less. You go to a club to have a good time and lose yourself, you don't really have a hissy if DJs don't stick to miltary itineraries.

Good Post

It could just be that he dug what the warm up guy was doing and wanted to give him the chance to play a little longer? This more likely than ego in Dixon's case I feel.

Fair play though, none of us were actually there except Nobbie...

I also wasn't there that night (but did attend the afters where the D and mladen played for hours and hours). I've had the pleasure to meet steffen (dixon) two years ago and he's most definitely one of the most down to earth DJs I've met. ego factor zero

Solomon on the Essential Mix tonight recorded at Pacha. Will have a listen on the iplayer tomorrow and see what it's like.

I wouldn't care that much if I wasn't paying 55 Euros upwards to attend this night by way of travelling from Canada to attend for that matter. For that amount I would expect a decent sized set from Dixon, and perhaps he did make up for that time by going over into Solomun's slot. Not to sure when he started. Kennon is good, but let's be real, I'm not attending this night cuz of him. It's just that I've seen other DJs time and time again cut sets short because of a lack of crowd or not starting on time because the crowd isn't there, so I don't know what else to believe. Alex Kennon was playing extremely well so yes it could be just letting him do his thing.

Just listened to it on a long car journey. The second half is pure Solomun at Pacha, and captures how his sound (IMO) is getting heavier this year. Only listen to it if you can turn the volume & bass up to the extreme.

3rd Solomun set I've given a listen to over the last 2 weeks and i thought this was by far the best. Albeit the other 2 were festival sets from Parco del Forum and Tomorrowland which is a different ball game but i didnt particularly like either one of those very much. Just felt like this one had a little more life to it, looking forward to getting back to this night Sept 11 w/ Mano**.
