Sky News Says - "Young People Turning Away from Ibiza"

My in-laws usual go out at least once a year to visit daughter. Priced up to go this weekend, same hotel as last year (in their words barely a 3*) £1000 dearer than last year!

Going Canaries instead for two weeks. We discussed it this evening- we don't mind paying big dollar for the good things, food for them and clubs for us. But even shit stuff has got expensive, bars in PDB charging club prices?!?!?

I've just been to Malta for the football, dj Oliver hannemann played 20e in and vodka/mixer 2.50e- the same drink price as it was everywhere.

same with been going multi times a year since 82.first time this year i have not gone, hotel i stay went up from 760 euro to 1860...thats just a week a/i...and yes a hotel in pdb...seen that resort gone from full of families to young and middle aged people with the money.ok some places are cheap and nice.but down the old fiesta land ( hard rock) ushuaia etc.prices are unreal. And every other hotel in resort as had a refit to keep up.like mine...times have changed alot gone are the days you stayed there for £250 for two weeks.the 1860 is with vip discount as well.
fckn hell woody, thats grim news

I dont if look at hotel prices anymore in Bossa...used to love staying there. Now always ibiza town or.fig way cheaper, paid 160 e for 5 nights in decent hotel in fig in oct

I remember reading years ago that the average age of people going clubbing in Ibiza was 32. Can't find the source and sounds spurious to me, but I'd often quote it to mates who assumed Ibiza was like Magaluf or Malia.

I suppose it depends on the night too. Together for example seems to cater to young Brits who turned up in Ibiza then suddenly remembered they don't like house music and don't recognize any of the names on the billboards.

I'm also big into trance, and have found that the fan base for certain nights is aging rapidly. Went on a trance boat party a few years back, and at 24 my mate felt like the youngest on the boat by some distance!

On the cost issue - I've always argued that the insane price of Ibiza is a necessary evil. If it was cheap, you really would get crowds of young kids getting smashed and throwing up in the streets.

All that said, there are families and old couples who go on holiday to Portinax, and aside from a few confusing billboards on the way from the airport, they wouldn't even know the island had any clubs on it.

The average was.....

I loved that record, played it to death when vinyl was the one and only, bought a smile to my face this morning.

Ive not seen a real difference in the ages, maybe I am not looking hard enough ( and I love stats/numbers ), my hotel has not gone up and the drinks are still cheap. It is up for a huge refurb and and going for higher star rating so I will expect prices to rise. We have discussed prices ( and ive seen the plans ) he does listen to his customers...

at somepoint you'll look round and everyone will be 40+

the best thing that could happen imo

and not just from a selfish perspective either

if the economy recalibrates and draws in a more chilled, older demographic you'll get more facilities aimed at a more mature crowd. eg smaller venues, a less brash atmosphere, fewer incidents, less accidents, less balcony bombing, less drunken flights, less tat and less shit music and overall fewer headaches for the cops. the island might then be able to breathe again and get back to the roots. which is not to suggest all older people are saints or into yoga, but it might mean less overall grief all round

Not sure what you mean? The Portinax bit? I'm confused myself now!

Portinatx is one of the places that's swung increasingly over to adult-only, attracting 30-something couples with outdoor jacuzzi suites and the like, crowding out families. There's been a lot of dissention about the trend. Can assure you a lot of the "new clientele" are more than aware of clubs - think your perceptions are a tad out of date ;)

Fair point but i'd say its also important to have a blend of mid twenties so the older lads can pass the baton on to the next generation, you get dickheads abroad everywhere.

I have to say from my experience with the "older" lads it wernt through violence but through sheer attitude thinking they own the place and talking down to flight attendants and like to show they've got 50s and nothing less, coz they have upgraded to business class on a flight.

I personally like the older crowds, they know the craic. . But from a mid twenties point of view I loves the young ladys, got to let them on the island :p

this is the real worry. ibiza needs fresh blood - a new generation to fall in love with it.

Is there still something too fall in love with? Im not so sure. I always felt Ibiza was a movement for an entire generation. I went on 2 holidays when i was 17 in 1989, one was Corfu and one was Ibiza. The decision back then was easy and there was only one destination that i would keep returning to and i would say a lot on here made that same decision.

For the younger generation i think they only see "another" holiday island.

Ibiza, Majorca, Marbella.. much difference?????

As soon as the bell struck on the music policy times things changed and have been changing ever since.

There was a time you could get "that thing" in ibiza. Ibiza has changed and the thing it offers now you can get in a lot of other places.

It's Vegas headliners, glitz and celebrity endorsement pulling younger clubbers in who haven't moved on with their music tastes now - and a lower drinking age than the USA ! But the cost is definitely getting prohibitive for many. As far as the bar scene is concerned, Laganas, Malia and Sunny Beach are all twice as wild as the West End for younguns on their first holidays alone with their mates. Thankfully, they're not carrying as badly as that in San An too much any more, there's nothing to fall in love with on a holiday doing that either.

But for sure, "that thing" I think you mean is gone for most people on their first exposure to Ibiza nowadays.

.... And with people coming to the island for shorter periods, are they finding the time to fall in love with it? At a young age, priority is the clubs and "FOMO" over the 3 or 4 days perhaps leaves less time to explore?

When I first started going it was 2 weeks early to mid season and 1 week in September. There was space and time to explore further afield more and more. Now going back with the kids every year we're taking them to places, beaches and restaurants we first visited 20 years ago. There's plenty to fall in love with, but if a full throttle 72 hour clubbing fix is all the young blood are currently seeking, it may be a challenge for them to be seduced by the alluring, and admittedly more sedate in comparison, alternative side to the island. However Pikes, Las Dalias etc and beach clubs (if you must) provide an outlet for the mature who still want to let loose now and again.

I'll be back in October for playas, paellas, canas, vistas and perhaps some nocturnal pursuits. We'll see. But everything's there for everyone if you seek it out.

Problem for the young ones too is it costs a few more pesetas compared to 20 years ago.

Theres probably 2 types of younger tourist in Ibiza:

- Package holiday. 18-24. They will typically go to the West End and maybe go to 1 big club and maybe Ocean Beach during their week holiday. This crowd could go anywhere and is entirely interchangeable with any European resort. This crowd has always been there and equally interchangeable over the years.

- Clubber holiday. 22-30. This is generally a clued up clubbing crowd and mainly coming for the clubs but odd day off for some tourist type stuff. This crowd is still very much there and I've not seen a change in crowd or attendances since I first came in 2005. When I go to clubs or events in London the same kind of crowd I see there is the same kind I see in Ibiza obviously mixed in with like minded individuals from other countries.

For the clubber type I'd be surprised if there was a drop? In fact surely it has gone since when I first started going as there is now much more choice and variety of nights available then it feels from 'back in the day.'

Ibiza will always be the clubbing holiday of choice, but there is much more to the numbers then that segment of the market

Well in that case I stand corrected, however I'm only talking like two years ago at most.

My point was that people don't just go to Ibiza for the clubs. My grandparents went just a year or two ago (can't remember if it was 2015 or 16) and made that exact jokey comment about the billboards - my grandad is more of a Bob Dylan man than an Armin fan.

I don't see why that warranted the (now deleted) comment that I was being condescending.

Fact is, families and older couples still go to Ibiza. My aunty and uncle are going next year, and regularly took my cousins with them when they were younger. Again, they always stayed in Portinatx, and have no interest in dance music. Admittedly I don't know where on the island they're going next year.

Of course families and older couples (+ young couples) go to Ibiza, all sorts of average holiday makers do, they make up the (at least) 75% of island visitors. I don't think the billboards are confusing them. Most are aware of the clubs, just glad to be away from them. As Kimajy said, Portinatx is now on the change, and will probably continue going that way, unfortunately.
btw, I didn't delete my condescending post, although it survives, as it was quoted.....

"Ibiza used to be the place where a prince and a pauper could stand in the same room " ....

yes, that is what I miss most of all. I'm no prince but there was a time when I was guilty of frequenting gin palaces elsewhere, and what I really loved about Ibiza was that it seemed to level differences, people were just people without all the pretence that is so much in evidence now. Those who wanted more than anything to pose chose another place to go. Now they are everywhere on the island. The natural carefree beauty of people is harder to find, although the natural beauty of the island itself is still very much in evidence despite the scars of development. It's that beauty which deserves to be protected as long as possible !!
