Russia v England

Well, what can I say. England scored the early goal and then defended way too deep for anyone's good.

The Russians spent a lot of time in the English final third but had very little cutting edge until their 2nd half substitutions. That penalty seemed to throw England into panic mode, thus the 2nd goal. Robinson partly as fault, as usual. Poor game plan too.

Good atmosphere in the stadium despite it being Olympic sized. The athletics track is probably a good thing... kept the occasional thrown flair off the field :?

They set off fireworks at Moscow State University, which sits up high on Sparrow Hills just across the river from the stadium. You'd think they just won the World Cup. One friend of mine called it "historic"... which I suppose it will be if they beat Israel and Andorra.

The organization, as my English friend and I experienced it, was very good - a massive improvement on the Madonna concert (only other event I'd attended at Luzhniki stadium) and on par with what they do at the 60% smaller Lokomotiv stadium, where most Europeean matches are played. Three security checks on the way in (the last including metal dectors) but they moved quite quickly. Police presence massive but not overbearing... they were even helpful despite not speaking English (I avoided speaking Russian so as to get them to let us take shortcuts through their lines on the way out of the grounds ). I think the Champions League final next spring, with the planned laying of a real pitch, could be a very good event.

Re: incidents. I've heard there were 5 assorted incidents including the one mentioned above. Most of the English I spoke to around town, however, have had a wonderful time in Moscow.

thing is - that Georgia game is irrelevant if we beat Italy at home
I hadn't checked the numbers.. but you've got to beat Italy? A draw won't do? Even at home, it's not going to be easy. But doable.

How strange would that be? A European championship without England or Italy? 8O

England, threw it away!! 3, names i'm gonna mention, McClaren picked the team, Rooney great goal undid it all by giving away a pen, where was Lescott? And Robinson, real flapper his confidence looks shot!!

My mate Richard and I were talking about this after the match. Where was Lescott? and what the hell was Rooney doing defending back in the box?!

I'm reading through all the various match reports right now. Everyone mentions how Rooney's penalty foul was just outside the box, but no one mentions that Rooney's goal was (very slightly) offsides...

if we draw, we require Ukraine to beat France at home
i think if that happens then a draw is good enough as we beat the french twice

Hmmm it was a facinating day's football.

First England, I'm glad no one here has made the excuse of the penalty. I think it did start outside the box, and then its difficult to say wether it carried on over inside, either way it was marginal. Like Phil says, what was Rooney doing there? Ronaldinho rarely gets in Barcelona's half let alone area, I think Rooney should do the same when he plays.

Like Morbyd says, England defended way to deep. They needed more men in midfield, they were being over run, Cole and Wright-Philips werent seeing the ball in the wing. If ever they needed another more central midfielder (ie Lampard) it was then

I still think Russia will struggle against israel, all is not lost you lot 8)

Then Scotland, i was gutted they lost, but hey if they perform against Italy like you did against France they still have a chance. Plus France have to go to the ukraine, so if Scotland draw against Italy and France lose in Ukraine you will still go through.

Northern ireland did us a favour and got a point in Sweden, if we beat the Swedes at home we'll be top. All we probably need is one point from sweden and Northern Ireland at home to get through... ahhh it's nice not be sweating over qualification ;)

ps: Morbyd, so it's confirmed that the champs League final will be on grass? We wouldnt want Barca's silky skills to be hindered in the final ;)

I'm not so sure... they're a better team than Israel. And many of the Russians played in Israel for their clubs at the Channel One Cup tournament this summer, so they're familiar with the grounds. Plus the only loss of this campaign was at Wembley. Not saying it won't happen, but it's a longshot.

Ya, we wouldn't want that, would we? So best Barca just don't make it to the final! ;)
(yes, it's confirmed... one of UEFA's conditions for Russia hosting the final)

If the truth be known England were robbed the referee was shocking, but Ireland are nothing short of pathetic and it all boils down to Steve Staunton, a man who lead a distinguished career but is simply not capable of managing an International team, some of his selections have left people open mouthed in disbelief, ultimately the buck lies with the shambolic Football Association Of Ireland who amazingly appointed him 2 years ago, they promised the Irish nation a World class manager and gave us a man who was assistant manager at Walsall instead

Last night was one of the worst results we've ever had at home, a late late equaliser against a team like Cyprus is shocking plain and simple, im glad i didn't fork out €50/€70 to go watch that garbage last night,it was painful enough watching it on the TV, you could see the reaction of the fans who quite rightly booed the team off the park and called for Staunton to do the decent thing and resign.

If he is any sort of man he will tender his resignation with immediate effect (it's a pity certain members of the FAI didn't too)if he doesn't people will end up despising him for it,Ireland needs a world class manager, we have some really good players and with the right man in charge we can be right back up there again.

We live in hope.:?

Mr68, whats your opinion on grannygate? Do you think he should be allowed to play again...I personally think the line about the miscarraige is a load of tosh also.

lescott was missing on the 2nd goal too, he should have been first to that ball........the way robo is playing, you've got too anticipate that he might fumble it.

i only see part of the england game but like previously mentioned we played far to deep, I mean what the hell was rooney doing so far back when we were 'crusing' 0-1.

As for the goalie error, I also blame the defenders - first thing you lean is to follow up and I think somone should have cleared the rebound. We had 3 defenders looking for godsake - still I hate Robinson so blame him if you wish

i still believe, we'd managed to squeeze though in the past and will stay positive until the fat lady sings

it's all about the rugby these days anyway didn't you know:)
