Or did General Franco sneak back into power?? :?

jjinit,

As I said before Spain is a country with no experience in multicultural or multiracial societies. YOu have been working on it for ages while ten years ago there were no multicultural / racial diversity in Spain.

THere were 50.000 people in Bernabeu. Spain has 40.000.000 citizens, so please don't make for sure we are all racists.
Your Franco comment is just not funny, right? My dad was in jail cos of him and it's a very painfull part of our history.

Sorry but i don't feel thats a valid excuse for an EU country in 2004 to be honest, not that Sil should have to make excuses for her country!

It's not an excuse it's just how things are. Stuie, ten years ago there were NO OTHER RACES in that country while you were born in a multicultural society, so probably for you that doesn't make the difference but it does, cos it's a new "factor". YOu've been working on racism for ages while in this country it's a new issue.

And to be honest, I wasn't mean to get into this discussions, but I don't think I have tu put up with Franco references cos this is ofensive, painful and totally out of order.

End of for mer

Spain have been playing in the world cup since it began, there has always been black players in football in my lifetime and many before me.

First, it's not an excuse, it's a fact.

Second, football seems to show off the worst part of everyone, you brits have a good experience on it, cos brit supporters have an extremly good reputation abroad, don't they?

Third, as intelligent people you are, I understand you blame the supporters who shouted yesterday, but Franco references, pointing out a whole country as racist and all that it's totally unfair.

.

I'm Scottish & British... for your info, Scotland have won every award going for being the best behaved football fans in football. Don't start pointing the finger at everyone else.

Last night was shocking, the worst thing I have seen in sport for some time - that is a FACT.

I agree with Silvia here.

Last nights incident was totally out of order and those involved should be ashamed, but us brits need to remember the behaviour of OUR supporters before shouting down another country.

Look Craig,
It's not me who pointed a whole country as racist, or who talked about Franco, right? I do undestand you blame on those 50.000 silly cows who were at Bernabeu yesterday, I do blame on them. But please, don't get demagogic and start to consider Spain as the new racist paradise cos you should know it's not

I'll reply here as the other post is locked.

My original post wasn't aimed at criticising a country, merely a set of people who acted in a way which sickened many people.
Does this mean people can't post their views regarding war, terrorism, or any other current affairs for that matter, for fear of offending a nation?

Just because a lot of Spanish people use this board, does that mean that no-one can start a subject which criticises certain actions?

Last nights events were deplorable, but it is quite clearly referring to an extremely vocal minority and not indicitive of a nation.

If we can't discuss things like this then there's no point in making any contribution to the message board.

Let's stick to talking about where Tiesto's playing next or how wasted I got at the weekend......

The late, great Laurie Cunningham

One of Englands first black players...signed for Real Madrid in the early 80's....how did the crowd react to him??

Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos...do they get this kind of abuse every week?? :?

Syl, we're all measured & intelligent enough to realise it was a very small minority, not representive of good Madrillenos, Spaniards, Catalanians etc but it was still sickening :(

to be fair, Craig at no point said anything of the sort, with regards to a whole country being racist, because it's clearly not the case.
People need to stop getting so defensive.

Fair point Stu,
But this post is getting a bit mental, actually the first comment with references to Franco isn't the thing I like to find on here on a sunny morning.
I read your post earlier and I said nothing, I wasn't mean to say nothing cos I do understand you are furious, but this Franco reference is just too much. Probably it was a joke but for me is like saying we are back to the hardest fascism.

Have a nice day

The situation witnessed in Spain last night was the same as in England in the 1970s and early 80s. Thankfully a lot has been done to stamp racism out in football and I can honestly say I've never heard any racist chants at any matches I've been to.

Is there such a initiative to stamp out racism in the Spanish game, Sil? Perhaps this is the problem in that they've don't done enough to condemn it in Spain so people think it's acceptable.

I appreciate that not all fans are like this in Spain, but it was very sad indeed.

Oh and please don't group English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish fans together!
