He was unreal proper quality night it was, atmospher was top draw to, no idots all top class people, judging by the amount of cars parked all over the place ALLOT of people travelled. Hope you all liked it to travel up again sometime?!

Only thing was i was expecting to leave thinking it was the best night ive had in there but i dind :( the tempo of his music was a bit up and down (or was that me???) and to tell the truth he wasnt as good as TIESTO when he played last, He did however play TIESTO - Traffic which made my night and Motorcycle - As the rush comes which are both my tunes of the summer so it was all good!!!

Anyone else that went have a good night??

Yes, I had a brilliant night, but there was definately something missing to make it up there with the best. Atmosphere and people spot on like you say, but I'll agree again and say I enjoyed Tiesto more. Possibly a better crowd for PVD but Tiesto gets the nod purely and simply for the music.
I'm being picky and still had a brilliant night, it just wasn't up there with Tiesto and Sasha at the Shack, but there again, they were very special nights.

I disagree, been going to the `Shack since early `94 & have had many great times in there over the yrs. I am a big PVD fan, but also love Tiesto when he is on form, his set @ the `Shack was special i will agree, certainly the best i`ve ever heard him play, but i`ve seen PVD spin all over the world over the last ten yrs. & IMO opinion thats the best set i`ve ever heard him play, its not just me though, every single message board you can imagine is going off with a positive vibe about this night & PVD`s set, much more so than the Tiesto night generated, with many ppl. including those on the `Crasher board (& they should know if anyone!) saying it was the best they`d heard him play, fri night was my bro`s birthday, the 10th anniversary of my first nights proper clubbing, the club that is closest to my hearts 10th birthday & to cap it all my favourite DJ was playing - PVD! - Normally i sooo luck forward to nights like these & then for whatever reason its just an anticlimax - NOT THIS TIME - We got a position @ the back near the speakers so we could hear it properly & literally had the - TIME OF OUR LIVES :D !!!

:D ShinySY! :D

i do agree it was up there with the best nights, ive not heard anyone say a bad thing about it, Ive seen people on the Judge Jules board and the Goodgreef board rave about how good that night was, im actually quite proud that The Empire pulled something of That has generated so much intrest, id love it if from this the shack could start making people travell up more often for a night, cause for the Tiesto night it was a quality night but hardly anybody traveled to go there.

All you had to do was look how many cars were parked on the pavements and everywere in the street to see how many people travelled for that night.

I had a good night, not even that keen on PVD (!!sorry!!) but would definitely travel back for someone more prog like Sasha/Digweed...

Strange that people don't really travel to it (i gather that from all your posts) it's a good place, although it did seem to have a sloping stage (or was that me?!)

Negatives: The damn security at the front of the dj booth, yeah like i want to stare at your ugly mugs all night...

AND as for the toilets, good God, Hacienda flashbacks... :(

Just like to say i was`nt really disagreeing with your views, its as you see it yourself, your personal preferences, your opinions & how you are on the night, i think our position right near the speaker @ the back had a lot to do with it, the sound was loud, booming & crystal clear, we may not have been in the thick of it in the middle of the dancefloor, BUT give me a good soundsystem & i`m loving it, yeah i beleive we can be very proud that the Shack pulled it off, the only thing the club can really be acredited for in all of this though is actually booking the man, the rest was down to him & his flawless set on the night & the inevitable reaction of the crowd, i`d love to beleive the Empire would go from strength to strength as a result of this, BUT its been around a long time now, the cracks have been showing for a long time now & even though IMO its probably in the top two venues in England, its still facing an uncertain future, if it keeps the same promotions team it needs a more consistent music policy, as even though variation has been a strength in the past, these days people are more clued up, know exactly what they want to hear & only grow an affection for a club that consistantly has line ups they like, if the current promoters are`nt prepared to implement this, maybe get big name guest promoters in on a regular basis to give it a much needed shot in the arm, subliminal does well on the house front, maybe get Cream, GC,PaSSion or even a big name trance label in every now & again to cater for that side of things, no one who ever studied the line ups could ever fail to agree that the promoters obviously prefer house & only book trance DJ`s for commercial reasons, either way friday night will go down in legend as one where it all came good at the same time - UNFORGETTABLE :D !!!

:D ShinySY! :D

yeah they do favour house but money speaks!!!! they get the better turn outs when trance is on, the only big tuer outs for subliminal is when morillo and sanchez are on! obviously when digweed adn sasha are on its also heaving!

i dont think they should be bringing passion etc to middlesbrough!!! no thankyou... the shacks as good as it is because its so unique and caters for every music taste - if it went to one genre of music then peopel would get bored of goign everywekk to see the same dj's week in week out!!

look what happened to gatecrasher!!!!!!! too much of the same isn;t good!!!

I think the biggest downfall for the sugarshack Is the Middlesbrough council. The sugershack has the potential to pull people in as friday showed but the council wont give them a licence past 2 and thats what it needs, After years of trying this year they were granted 12 3.30 licences thats 1 a month, people wont travell unless its worth it and if they cant stay open then its not worth it.

nah mate, you`re not getting what i mean, when they book house dj`s they make the effort to get all manor of quality DJ`s in from all over the world, in trance its always the same old played out DJ`s like Judge, Kelly & F*rgie when there is a whole international world of trance DJ`s to be tapped into, FFS they`ve proved they can fill the `Shack when they use their imagination ie. Tiesto & PVD, if they cant promote trance with the same enthusiasm whats the harm in getting specialist bigger name promoters in to do the job for them or have an affiliation with a big trance label like Vandit or Black hole in much the same way as they do with subliminal, on a once a month frequency, their lack of enthusiasm for Trance shines through like a beacon & isn`t on, take for example the second arena, whatever style is on in the main arena, it features house, if the `Shack truly was the palace of varieties it claims to be then it would feature trance in the second arena when the main arena was house, then both crowds would be equally catered for, dont tell me the demise of Cream & GC was to do with sticking to one genre - trance, coz thats just not true, both clubs were booming like never b/f when trance was the name of the game in `99, not happy with that in `00 they then thought they would introduce a new `cooler` music policy of dark, dreary prog as championed by a certain mundane radio 1 DJ & a rubber faced german chap, alienating 99% of their loyal following, the result - both clubs in the mire within 1.5 yrs, PaSSion has never struggled because they never reverted to prog & always had a second house arena which featured labels like subliminal & included morillo, they also have the once a month red room sessions where house moves into the main arena & trance goes into the backroom, this has been sucessfull & with a bit of imagination could be implimented at the shack, PaSSion has never been an alnighter, finishing @ 3am which is 1hr later than the `Shack, its success has been based around a policy of strong entertaining residents & a strong guest dj line up, week in, week out, this creates a following of a loyal crowd, `Shack`s current policy of having varied music genres week in, week out, with a resident dj that educates instead of entertaining resulting in the night not coming alive till after midnight & only having 1 guest DJ per week is having the opposite effect, nights like Tiesto & PVD, offer IMO a glimpse of the only way forward.........

:D ShinySY! :D

can't really argue much with that cos you've put over some very good points!!!! your totally right baout the place not coming alive till after midnight but i still think oli faulkner is very good and he does play a lot more trancier when there's big name trance dj's on!!!

jules and fergie play everywhere and i like it when fergie comes to the shack altho he doesn't pull the amount of clubbers he used to 1/2 years ago when he played there!!! hopefully some of the names they've got there this year is a sign of things to come, will be crossing my fingers that van dyk, tiesto etc are back!! hopefully have armin and ferry corsten playing in 2004 just as they did in 2002!!!!

the shack used to book 2 big name dj's virtually every friday..... sometimes there would be too fairly big name trance dj's on or there would be the likes of yousef, followed by jules etc!! or soct bond and jonh kelly and sonique too!!!!! but maybe they can;t afford it anymore and what big name dj's these days wants to play a warm up set of 10 - 12 ???? the club wont be busy at 10, which is why they normally have just one headliner and they tend to do 3/4 hour sets and not a standard 2 hour set which i think is better!!!! a dj playing 3/4 hours instead of 2 can show a lot more of what they can do and also provide more variety etc!!!

I know what you're all saying about Friday, it was an excellent night, no doubt about it. All I'm saying is musically, I preferred the Tiesto night. Now that's obviously just down to my taste in music, nothing to do with the night as I've said, the crowd was better on Friday than I've ever seen it. Even the moody bouncers kept a low profile which was a pleasant surprise.
When it comes down to a straight choice, I prefer Tiesto's music, I've judged the two of them at the Shack, and also together in Ibiza, and both times I enjoyed Tiesto's music (only the music) more.
Still a great night though, and if PVD was on again this week, I'd be at the front of the que.
On the Sugarshack issue, I think Middlesbrough council will now have no grounds whatsoever not to issue a late license every week. Its been proved that it doesn't create extra problems for the police as people who go to the shack aren't the ones who cause trouble in town.
Gazdabomb, at the start of July, Sugarshack were granted 12 late licenses until the end of the year when the situation will be reviewed. So with no extra trouble created, and with Mayor Ray Mallon backing the late license, all should be well for next year and it would be nice for a few more people to travel cos Friday's crowd was second to none.

ahhhhhhhhh but why is he backing the late licence??!?!?!

its opnly a rumour but i've heard that its gonna be sold to the councila nd move elsewhere , in fact i get the sugarshack newsletter throught he post and they even said that its a possibilty but not until they find another suitable evnue!!

i would quite happily sacrifice a late licence cos i dotn want it to move - the empire is as good as it is because of the venue!!!!!!

Yeah fair enough mate, i can sense your passion for the place & i know of all the nights/line ups you mentioned, coz i was there myself due to the obvious improved line up, in particular the Kelly/Scott Bond night - That was an absolute blinder, we were not impressed that J.K was warming up that night, but he played a belter of a set that we thought would eclipse anything scott bond had to offer - WRONG - UN FU(KINGBELEIVABLE!!! The smile on my face said it all, thing is mate, with Oli F. coming on the scene, talented though he is, but never an entertainer, always having to be credible & educate his public, its a false economy, he might save Barry F. money in a big name appearance fee, BUT his name & preferred style WONT pull a crowd, any DJ will play any time, if he`s booked, look @ poor Guy Ornadel @ T.T`s the other week, warming up @ 10.30 for Adam Sheridan & a couple of yrs. ago @ the `Shack for Lisa Loud - can you tell me any other club in the country where Guy would warm up for Lisa Loud ?!?!
Saying they cant afford more than 1 headliner is`nt an excuse to me, coz if they can keep the price down to £10 when Oakie is on, with his fees they obviously dont have any financial problems, its just that they cant be bothered anymore & take the easy option with Oli & 1 headliner, extended sets are well cool, yes, but without the extra name on the line up the crowds wont come, longer set or not.
Trance @ the shack has never been properly promoted coz the promoters soooo obviously dont care for it, on the whole the promotion is stale, picking DJ`s by numbers from the serious DJ agency, what is needed is a fresh approach with bigger line ups, using more imagination, like their house events, otherwise the current stagnation will continue, crasher Vs. PaSSion this w/e is a guaranteed sell out, coz its a brill idea that nobody thought could possibly happen coz of clubland politics & the line up is amazing, that sort of thing should & could happen @ the `Shack, coz the sheer beauty of that venue deserves it, everyone i`ve ever brought to the club from out of the area cant beleive we have possibly the finest venue in the country in middlesbrough & its time it realised its potential b/f its too late, is sold to the council & turned back into a theatre - NOOOO  !!!

:D ShinySY! :D

P.S that PaSSion/Crasher night is sooo deppressing me, as i am on a w/e of nights! - NEC soon though :D !

Yea I've heard about that too, but like they said, "only if a better venue can be found". Now I don't know about you, but I'd say they would struggle to find a better venue in the whole country, never mind Middlesbrough. And just look how Basics in Leeds is struggling to attract the crowds to Rehab since the move.
I can't see them moving, but if Barry Faulkner was offered a venue, say with the layout something like Foundation in Newcastle, and big money for the Empire, then you can guarentee we'll be on our way to pastures new.
Like I say, I can't see it happening because of the lack of a suitable venue, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.
The music and the punters are the most important thing.

The police`s whole case in objecting to a late licence is a complete joke in my opinion & anyone with any clue would see why, their excuse is their resources are already stretched to the limits on a w/e & a late licence would only make that problem worse, well i`m gonna shoot that down in one sentence - just about everyone in `Boro who attends a nightclub @ the w/e leaves @ 2am - Fact - at this time police resources are stretched, if the empire had a new closing time 1.5hrs later, when everyone else had gone home then this would relieve the resources of the police @ 2am & allow them to concentrate on policing the Empire crowd (as if they cause trouble  !) when it kicked out @ 3.30am - their argument now well & truly knackered, dunno why this has`nt been mentioned b/f as its sooo obvious, as for the new venue, well i think the `Shacks venue is unique & irreplaceable & somewhere like foundation is, although it works well, a complete hole in comparison, i had heard rumours Barry F. was buying a church though, now that is an idea, if its true & he can get a licence, a trade for a trade with Robocop perhaps...........

well.................... here's the rumour!!!!

u know the old church near the purple onion?????????????

that has apparently already been bought - obviously dont know how true it is!!!!! i think they prob would move in favour of a alte licence but as u say..... i can;t think of a better venue they would find in the uk nevermind middlesbrough!!!!!!

shinsy - maybe u r right that they dont put the effort in but i dunno what we can do about it!!! i absolutely worship the shack and i'd hate music policies to eb changed int he way that trance would no longer!! surely the promoters understand that trance attracts the bigger crowds and they must here the comments afetr such nights like tiesto and van dyk!!!!
